GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Endorsement

Posted by: Nihilist1 Feb 9 2012, 09:42 AM

Hello all! As of this morning, I have officially been endorsed by V-Picks! I have been using them for some time now, thanks to Todd, and I can honestly say that I love them. Below is a link to the site. I do talk about them often in our Saturday chats, so no, I am not spamming the rest of you. I am just elated that they would endorse someone like me laugh.gif

http://v-picks.com/

I personally prefer the Stiletto Buffed.

http://v-picks.com/productdetails.php?q=215&page=picks

I got the idea to use it after Todd had a Switchblade Custom Buffed for his shredding awesomeness.

http://v-picks.com/productdetails.php?q=214&page=picks

These picks can be a bit pricey, but they are definitely worth it. The acrylic they are made of actually has a heat-activated grip! This makes it damn near impossible to drop them. Plus, they are comfortable and fast. Let me know if you have any questions. My custom picks are going to be complete in a week or two and then I will post a video on YouTube.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Wow, congratulations. How did you get it? I would love to know how people get endorsements. smile.gif

Posted by: Nihilist1 Feb 9 2012, 09:48 AM

I just sent an E-mail to the owner of the company asking if I could get one! I have bought very many of his guitar picks and his wife and I E-mail back and forth whenever I buy new ones! They are really nice people. Try a few picks and talk with them a little bit here and there when you order them. You might be able to eventually get an endorsement too!

Ah, great. Thanks. I tried to get a V pick when I was in US guitar center store but they had none. I want to try one and see how they are. I will get my friend to get the picks next time around when they travel home. smile.gif

Do you order them ? Do you have to pay any outrageous customs charges ?

I had an HD cam come from the States and I had to pay an extra £70 or something to get it delivered. Just wondered if they do the same thing with every single thing that comes from the US.

That's great news man!!! Congrats!!!

I have several V-picks and I used them for a while and loved them. Then I went back to normal plastic picks and found I could play better. I just don't like the loud chirp. biggrin.gif But ... to each his own. If they work for you...that's awesome!

I'm actually very glad to hear about this, and read this post. I was very interested in the "Red Bear Trading Co." picks, but they're around $30 with shipping, so VERY pricey! When I started emailing the owner with questions specific to my picking needs, and asking if there was any dealers where I could try 1 or 2 before ordering, he was quite rude and told me that he already has too many orders and doesn't need more business. Needless to say, I will never buy one!

You mention that these picks have a good grip. What about for sweaty fingers? One of my buddies told me that the Red Bears are horribly slippery if you get sweaty fingers, and that it also makes them crack fairly quickly. I can tend to get the dreaded "sweaty fings" at times, which is why I stick to dunlop tortex.....but I go through SO MANY of them!!

I don't really sweat much, so I cannot help you there laugh.gif

I can say this however: Over time, your bodily oils will collect on the acrylic and make it somewhat slippery. If you wash it with bar soap, it will get rid of all the oils and be as good as new. Also! These picks have AMAZING durability. I have yet to go through one Stiletto!

Thank you all for the compliments!

Mucho Congrats man! wink.gif I gotta say I love V-Picks. It' was really great of Vinnie @ V-Picks to customize a special "Shred" variant of the switchblade for me. It remains the fastest pick I've ever played.
Sounds like you prefer the Stilletto buffed which is also a killer pick!

Hopefully the first of many endorsments to come!

BEN! The SWITCHBLADE BUFFED remains my personal fav of course, ( I have a very heavy handed pick/mute style so I like the size/thickness) but you may dig a different one depending. Email Vinnie and tell him about yourself and what type of picks you like. He's a really cool guy and will set you up with some great stuff that is purpose built for your particular style of play. Gotta love those guys!

Ben I've not been hit by customs, they are sent in a small padded envelope so easy to be passed over, plus you won't be hitting the limit for a customs charge unless you buy loads.

I like the Small Pointed and Stiletto.

wink.gif It looks like you have found a new member to add to your band, then!

My prototype custom pick came in today. It is a Stiletto Buffed. I say prototype, because I am going to buy a new production plate and have my initials stamped on all of my pick orders, that way I will know if someone tries to steal them wink.gif

Here is the Stiletto compared to a new Dunlop 1.5MM Tortex

Look at how sharp that thing is!

I think it is more like a friendship deal. I am not big enough to be on the artists list. Especially when you consider that he has pepole like Carlos Santana and Billy Sheehan on there.

It is cool. 50% off all guitar picks is a great deal.

Awesome! I actually have a photoshoot at Krank Amplifier HQ in Chandler, Arizona this weekend(thanks to that endorsement), so I may post those pictures in this thread as well. My bassist is getting his amplifier and I am going to test some. They want to help market our album when it is finished. That will be awesome.

Posted by: steve-rec-freak Feb 17 2012, 01:58 AM

Congrats man!
I really love v-picks. I have played the small pointed picks a pretty long time.
But as I went into some recordings there where squeaky sounds coming out of my amp. I figured out that this was my picking hand itself. ohmy.gif I am holding the pick not in an 90 degree angle to the strings as it should be. (I try to solve this now for month biggrin.gif)
(But it is just not feeling that comfortable for me...yet... biggrin.gif ). Anyway - this causes more friction to the played string itself. And because the v-picks are made out of some kind of glass compound, they made too much noise.

So I am back with my Ultex Jazz 3 2.0. It is really a pity. If it wasn`t for my picking hand I would prefer V-Picks,
because they are indeed one of the best guitar/bass picks ever made. - In my opinion.

cheers,

S.

That isn't a problem, people pick differently, with all sorts of angles. Do what's comfortable and gives a good sound!

Thanks for the advice,

I switch right hand technique pretty often, as I try to get as much tone as I can get.
I noticed that most people, especially if the play faster try to pick as efficient as possible. In regards to that I try
to improve my efficiency when picking fast.
But off course there are exceptions. When I see great guitarists like Marty Friedman or Steve Morse, which have a very strange pick holding technique, it gives you the point and underlines what you say.

Maybe I am overdoing it by thinking too much about it. biggrin.gif

cheers,

S.

Yes. The Acrylic that V-Picks are made of do have a very distinct Pick Chirp. This page was designed to teach people how to eliminate that:

http://v-picks.com/tipsdetails.php?title=Pick+Chirp%3F%3F%3F&page=1

I also recommend trying the Picks that Todd had custom made. If that is too large for you(it shouldn't be) then use the Stiletto Buffed like I do. They are so sharp that minimal contact is made(if you learn to pick with the tip. Research the Stylus Pick for that. There are a few threads here, that discuss it). I hardly get any chirp from my Stilettos. Maybe it is because I really only use the tip, and a very slight angle. Oddly enough, I stumbled onto that link a couple days ago. and it instructs people to pick a lot like I do.

Hope this helped!

If you are playing the Tortoise picks like BEN, with the rounded tip, this thing will seem ALIEN. smile.gif If you are playing pointy picks already, it's not that much of a stretch. But it does have that Dorito shape!

I got the Dorito pick in the mail! And yup, it's the pointiest pick I've ever had. Even more pointy than my Custom Unbuffed Vpick Switchblate! I'm going to give them a shot and record some bits with them as well.

I hope this thread isn't too "old", to get a few responses back...

Love my v-picks. Tone is awesome. BUT, I tend to get sweaty on-stage and sometimes get the sweaty hands for virtually no reason. Sweaty hands = Slippery V picks.

Has anyone come up with a solution?

I went to a craft store and found several possible "options". I haven't tried any, but intend to try/consider trying the following options to modify a v-pick:

-Adhesive "fabric" tape. It may give just enough "fabric" to absorb minimal sweat. It's very thin as well.

-Sticky "dots". They are literally a sitcky little "dot" of clear plastic goo. Not my first choice, but it may work if nothing else does.

-Fuzzy/"velvet-y" stickers. Same thought as the fabric tape.

-Spray on material: I know they make cans of "spray on truck bedliner", which could provide some extra grip. But, it's probably not absorbing any sweat. If they made a spray on "tortex" material, that would be AWESOME!!

-Wax: I'm thinking about dipping one "Maker's Mark" style. Probably still not grippy when sweaty.

Any other ideas? I expect several "fails" before finding the right modification.

Try to find some way to relax and sweat less. I think the goo might work, but I do not sweat excessively when playing--unless it is summertime in California and I am in a hot garage.

Unfortunately "sweating less" isn't much of an option. Even when my hands are in good shape, and I'm not practicing very hard at all at work, I can get the "cold, clammy, sweaty" hands. It's weird. I hate it.

Now I HAVE been sweating less at shows over the last few years. But some shows I play are pretty intense as far as the material (shown below), not to mention lasers, lighting, stress, energy and the FUN that can also kick in a little sweat. At age 30, and years of gigging experience, I've learned to "know thyself" quite well....and "thyself" is cursed with sweaty, bony little hands!!

Regardless, I love the V-pick and will continue to find the best "modification" so I don't have to revert back to tortex. After hearing the difference in tone, I simply won't do it.

Note: A rag damp with "windex" will wipe the sweat, oils and grease clean from the pick and your hands. Worst care scenario, I ALWAYS keep one handy by my pedalboard for shows!

Instead of Windex(Since it is a harsh Chemical, try bar soap. It actually removes ALL the oils you have left on the pick. Hmmmm. Try E-mailing Vinni at V-Picks. His E-mail will be in the Contact section. Maybe he will have some tips for you. He always gets back to his customers. Especially when they have questions regarding the usage of his picks.

Thanks for the suggestion!! Vinni has certainly been VERY helpful thus far (and his wife also!!), and I certainly intend to email him as well. Also, I have a good friend that is a mechanical/industrial engineer and he usually has some killer solutions to problems such as this.

I'll keep y'all posted. I'm certain I'm not the only gigging musician that get's a bit "sweaty", so I'm sure Vinni has some tips as well!

I definitely get sweaty, but I have the tendency to wipe my body with a towel between songs. Then again, I rock the fan almost like Vai. I prefer cold weather, so being on stage can be a killer in some cases.

Dorito indeed biggrin.gif

I wonder if Vinni would make a Posterboy special.

A Stiletto that starts with the small pointed thickness and tapers down to the point.

Give all of these a shot and let us know what works! Also, some folks actually drill small holes in the large area of a pick to increase grip. It let's your fingers breath a bit too smile.gif

I certainly will. Someone recently suggested a bit of "hockey-tape", which sounds like a decent possibly solution as well. Never tried "Gorrilla Snot", and have read mixed reviews....looks like it's hard to find nowadays anyway.

I'll keep y'all posted. I also emailed Vinnie a few days back and am awaiting a response or some possible tips from them. I love the tone I'm getting from the picks WAY TOO MUCH to switch back now. I'll find a way to make V-picks work for my sweaty little hands! tongue.gif

If for some reason, he doesn't get back to you after a week or so, let me know and I will message him. I guarantee he will E-mail me back.

Take a knife and play tic-tac-to (cross hatch scratches) on either side of your pick. I do that with my "tortoise shell" picks - ads grip for me. Alternatively, you can heat up a pin to red hot and poke holes in your pick around where your thumb rests on the pick - it works, but I've found just carving it up a little with knife / razor blade adds a little extra grip.

Congratulations, that's great smile.gif

I've got a few V-Picks myself, but not all of them are to my liking..
I have two that are awesome though which I use quite a lot smile.gif

I can't remember the name of the pick, but I'll come back to that..

Vinni is THE MAN! smile.gif Glad they are working out! Also, give JAMSALOT's suggestion a try an "Cross thatch" your grip area with a sharp knife like he is talking about. I'd forgotten all about that, I used to do that to my pics all the time for live gigs.

what is the spray gymnasts use to stop their leotards going up their cracks?

That should work!!!!

Didn't read through the whole thread but someone said its not possible to get them in Europe.
I live in ... Germany and I order them online at the V-Pick page. They ship for a small extra to most countries worldwide. It takes about 3-4 weeks but they always reached me (once paypal screwed up my adress and they got lost but otherwise its all no prob).

Great picks even for someone like me who doesn't know much about guitar playing. I think they make you a better player.

Congrats to your endorsement.

ARGH!!! So....my second order is over 2 weeks, and hasn't arrived!! It shouldn't take that long in the US. I'm really trying to get my "perfect pick" selected, and it's really set me back. I wanted to be on my 4th order by now (figured it's gonna take a few tries to get the right "sweat modification" down....my first attempt failed), but I'm waiting for my second again. Also, Vinni's response to my sweat problem wasn't very good...."wash my hands and pick with soap". I feel like he didn't read my question....that or he thinks I'm going to be playing live next to a sink!

Anyway, I'm trying to be patient, because my experience at first was so good. But I'm frustrated. mad.gif

Try the "Cross thatch" trick where you use a pocket knife and just make lots of X shapes on the pick where your thumb goes. And some of the other tricks wel well ; )

Two weeks is too long. Contact the post office and see what is wrong. It only takes a few days if you live on the west coast. They most likely lost it. If that is the case, get some data and send it to Vinni. Business ethics determine that he will either reimburse you, or send more.

If the picks got lost on they way I'm sure Vinni will take care of it. He has been nothing but great/killer/awesome to me and everyone I've ever known that dealt with him. Sorry to hear about the lag though sad.gif

In the meanwhile, I bought a Pickboy "handmade bone" pick. Grips very well, and I do LIKE it.....but when compared to my Switchblade (now it's "buffed" from playing for a month!!) the tone just doesn't compare! Plus, the bone pick has just a bit of "resistance", thus slowing down my "top picking speed" a bit, whereas V-picks are very fast and light.

Also, I picked up several of the Dunlop Tortex Sharps, in heavier gauges than I used to play. V-picks taught me that a thicker pick can change the tone. My thought was, "Tortex always felt great, and gripped well....but I played a .88mm, and perhaps a thicker one will work well AND have better tone!!" If it did, it wasn't by much....and the tone was still the WORST when compared to the bone pick, or v-picks.

I'm doing all this comparative investigation NOW, so I can settle into my perfect pick as soon as possible. I wanted to be onto my 3rd or 4th v-pick order already, and working on "modifications" to the grip. Oh well, I'll get there asap.

Patience truly is vital. Guitar has taught me that, if anything.
