Hi! Welcome aboard!!! I am happy to see you here and very excited to start working with you!
I know you want to learn composition and improvisation and I definitely can help you with that!
I have a few questions before we start! It will give me a better idea about what assignments to give you!
-What are your goals?
-What is your weakness?
-What is your strongest point?
-Your favorite guitar players?
Glad to see you here and very excited to start working with you!!!!

Hi Alex,

My long term goals are to compose instrumental songs/guitar solos and possible come out with one album in this lifetime. biggrin.gif I do want to dive into short music pieces, royalty free music that filmmakers or any others can use. I want to sell them and start making little bit of money. But short term goal is definitely learning how to play guitar properly, master a scale and be able to come up with melody.

Weaknesses are a lot. I can't even play a 1 min lesson. Every time I try, it gets worse. It takes hours to record a decent take even after practicing it for a week or a month or even more than that. I can't play fast stuff.

Strongest point has been vibrato I think. Lot of people are commenting on that on my latest vids. I used to be able to compose a melody line before but since I decided to master techniques, I haven't had a chance to explore more on that. Nowadays, I can't come up with a decent melody.

Fav players are Joe Satriani, Andy Timmons, Guthrie Govan.

If you need any more info, let me know.

Thanks, I am excited to begin. smile.gif

Perfect! So I have a first assignment for you! It's a very good exercise that will help you to connect your hands together and will improve your timing and technique!
The trick is to play it at a very slow tempo and always use a metronome! You can use it as a warm up exercise and you will see results very fast!!!

It will be really nice to hear your progress! So if you can please post your take!

Hi Alex,

So, I got around and tried this assignment. The last bit is really confusing and I always wanted to learn something like that. I have encountered in 2-3 lessons here at GMC which I have tried and this one is helpful too. 3 nps but 4notes per beat really drives me crazy until I remember that melody in my head. smile.gif Stilling missing notes here and there but hope I got most right.

Waiting for your feedback. smile.gif

Thanks,
Chandra

Posted by: Alex Feather Apr 28 2012, 01:34 AM

You did a very good job! A few notes towards the end were off and a couple of timing issues, but nothing major!
I would suggest to practice this lesson with a click because you can hear more details! When you are practicing with drums you can hide behind the reverb and room mics, but when you have a click only it's all out and you can hear every single mistake!
I think a little more practice and it will be perfect!!! You can also start using it as a warm up exercise do it everyday and results will impress you!

Posted by: maharzan Apr 28 2012, 03:14 AM

Thanks Alex. I tried to insert a metronome track in Logic but don't know how. So, I just dragged a loop. I will try with a click next.

Sounds good!!! You will notice that when you are practicing with a click you will get better result! I'm looking forward to hear your take!!!!!

I have been practicing with click. smile.gif Just had to use drums as I couldn't get a click track during recording. smile.gif The most difficult part is the last section and I have been practicing it quite a bit. Will try recording one tomorrow. smile.gif

Posted by: maharzan Apr 29 2012, 04:24 AM

I finally came to know how to add a click track. I have recorded with click but there are few parts where I see there is slight timing issues. I have always struggled with these small timings, sad.gif hope I will get better with this exercise daily. smile.gif

Sounds very good!!!! A few timing issues but it's getting there!!! Do it every day as a warm up exercise!
I will post a new assignment for you tomorrow!!!

Posted by: maharzan Apr 29 2012, 09:05 AM

Thanks Alex. Timing has been my issue all these years. When I joined GMC, I was struggling with triplets or 16th triplets or even changing between quarter and triplets. I wish I had this exercise back then. It has improved a lot but still can be better. If I am composing a song, I still struggle with this though. I will practice this every day multiple times. smile.gif

Looking forward to the next assignment.

Perfect! I am glad this exercise works for you! Just keep practicing it and result will surprise you!
I have a new assignment for you! This exercise will help you make your right hand stronger and will improve your technique by a lot!!!
If you feel pain stop practicing this exercise for a while and let me know! You can injure yourself if you will over do it!
It's all legato and left hand only! Practice it very slow using a metronome! It's left hand only!!! No right hand should be involved!

Great. smile.gif

I just tried it and here is a problem. When I am going from say 5 (2nd string-pinky) to 2 (1st string-index), the pinky leaves the string and makes noise. The index hammeron is weak and doesn't sound loud. How to solve this issue ?

It's a very common problem! If yu can't get it to sound right slow down the click! Even if it's way to slow doesn't matter you need to get every note to sound right! It will take some time!!

Posted by: maharzan May 1 2012, 06:31 AM

I remember I saw a Guthrie video that said something about tapping each note with your left fingers (no right hand involved). That is different than regular legato stuff we do (mostly tapping). I am trying that in this noisy part and getting it more or less noiseless.

Its around 4:50.

Posted by: Alex Feather May 1 2012, 04:33 PM

It's a very good video to get ideas from! Guthrie is a great player!!! I am glad you found it!

Posted by: maharzan May 7 2012, 05:14 AM

Hi Alex,

Finally got sometime to record this. There are timing issues. smile.gif

Thanks,
Chandra

The pinky and the index tapping is pretty hard. smile.gif

Posted by: Alex Feather May 7 2012, 05:35 PM

You did a good job! But I can suggest to do it even slower the reason is you need to work your left hand and make it stronger so slower you will do it better results you will get!
Also try to play this exercise every day and do a run through maybe twice or more if you can!

Posted by: maharzan May 7 2012, 08:36 PM

Thanks Alex. I will post another take at a slower tempo. By twice you mean, do the whole thing again ? I do more for practice but didn't want to elongate in the recording. smile.gif

Posted by: Alex Feather May 9 2012, 12:33 AM

What I meant when you are warming up just play this exercise a few times thorugh

Posted by: maharzan May 12 2012, 01:11 PM

Hi Alex,

Here is at slower tempo.

Very well done!!! Now can you record the same thing with a metronome only? I think tempo is 90BPM if you can do only metronome and guitar! After I will show the next trick:)

Here it is smile.gif 90bpm seems pretty slow. This one is at 105bpm which seems aligned with the track you recorded.

Awesome!
For the new assignment we will start to get into improvisation a little bit more!
Here is a very cool II - V - I backing track in E minor
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/ii-v-i-jam
Over A7
A minor blues pentatonic
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
Over D major 7 F# minor pentatonic
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

When you are playing over this chord progression try to be as melodic as possible and create phrases instead just jamming!

Got your message!
You are actually ahead of me and that was the plan! Before we will start I would like to know how do you feel about the backing track I assigned you and if you got a chance to jam over it?
Let me know and we will begin smile.gif

Posted by: maharzan Jun 5 2012, 01:47 AM

I think the backing track moves pretty fast (chords). I guess it might be helpful to say have longer chords or just one chord to start with? one scale ? and slowly move from there ? I also need to learn how to phrase. I am ready to start from basic or relearn if need be.

Sounds good!
So we have E mi7 for one bar A7 for one bar and D maj7 for two bars
There are 4 counts in each bar! I hope it makes sense! I know at first it's hard to get use to counting but as soon as you will understand it, it will be piece a cake!
If you want I can explain counting in more details! Let me know !

Posted by: maharzan Jun 7 2012, 11:29 AM

I understand the counting. Its just that the chords change so fast. Say, if I play a note or two, the chord is already changed so moving from one scale to another looks confusing. You know, the visualization is hard. Coming up with melody is harder too. smile.gif

I was thinking if we could start with a longer duration of chords.

So I have a new assignment for you!
Let's simplify everything and start with a blues chord progression!
Here is the track

Over A7
A minor pentatonic in this position

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Over B7
B minor pentatonic in this position

This is a good way to get use to combining pentatonics!

Alex,

Lets leave this for now. As mentioned in the chat, I am learning to master the scales / modes all by myself. I can't find any good tutorial. All I can find is learn CAGED system and some 3nps scales. I am trying both but I am confused on which route to go. CAGED has 5 scale position, 3nps has 7, obviously more to learn. I really want to master this and learn by heart. So, if I am playing G Ionian, I should be able to change to say Eb Phrygian without having to think. smile.gif Please provide any lessons that might help achieve this. I know this will take years but I want to master one scale at a time or even focus on one position. I know Ionian pretty well but not perfectly. smile.gif

Thanks,
Chandra

Do we actually learn the patterns or notes ? I know the notes all over the neck but trying to find notes of a scale takes some thinking. How does it all come together? With lessons like this, I tend to learn more of pattern than the actual notes. sad.gif

You have to do both! I know it's hard but you will get better results! You can also try shifting patterns after you mastered them and this will help you play any mode without knowing notes 100%

Alex,

I have remembered the pattern and also playing by the mode name like A dorian, C lydian, B Phrygian, E minor, DMixolydian, etc (as given in the tab). I can move around and play E phrygian or E Dorian from the E note, etc. Now, how do we play E Dorian all over the neck, not just one position ? smile.gif

I am excited what the next lesson is. I will take this down all on the ground with your help. smile.gif

Thanks so much.

All you have to do is play from the root and that's it!
The best way is just to start using it is to play it all the time! smile.gif So I have a very cool backing track!
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/ii-v-i-jam

Over A7
A mixolydian
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Over D major 7
D major pentatonic
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

D major scale

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

If you have noticed D major scale is the same as A mixolydian just started from a different note! (D instead of A)
We will start to get into improvisation more it will be like a collab but one on one
I will record my take in a few hours using the same scales that I have provided for you!
In the meantime I would like you to get comfortable with the track and just jam around using shapes I have posted!
Let me know if you have any questions or need help!

Hi! I just wanted to follow up and see how are you doing?? Any questions?

Posted by: maharzan Jul 15 2012, 03:30 AM

This is where I stuck at Alex. The chord changes are so fast, I can't even remember the pattern. I mean there is litterally 2-3 notes I could play in that chord change. I can't think of now E dorian A mix D major. Its just too fast and my thinking process isn't fast yet I guess.

You can use any notes from those positions !Try to combine them together and turn them into short licks!
I would like to hear what you can come up with before I will give you examples!
Let me know if you need help or have any questions!

Hi Alex,

Just noodling around the scale. Please tell me what I can improve on. I sound too monotonous but I guess this is a better start. Concentrating on one thing at a time. Thanks for the push. smile.gif

You did a very good job!
Now let's write the chords structure out:
Ami7 - A - C - E - G
I would like you to write the other to chords
Dmi7 and Emi7 after I will explain a new assignment!
Good job!

PS. I have been looking and listening to improvisations on YouTube so that is helping too. I need to figure out how to play fast notes without sounding up/down or boring at times. Then, it should all come out! biggrin.gif

I think we are ready to switch to more advanced track! smile.gif
Here it is!
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/maharzan
What we will do is we will play 4 bars each and will create the whole solo from the beginning till the end!
I started it I use E dorian scale for E mi7 chord
when A 7 came I played a variation of the first phrase
Over D major I combined A major blues pentatonic with A minor
Now I want you to continue and play the next 4 bars! Try to continue my idea and really make it flow nicely together!
Let me know if you need help or have any questions!
P.S. When you will be uploading the track do it the same way I did with your take mixed and with the rest of the backing track playing!
