I'm working on some Rick Graham Pentatonic sequences and man does he mix it all up, with hammer-ons and pull-offs, hybrid picking and economy picking along with his Alt picking. It takes brain power and obedient fingers!

I started out with economy picking - but realised I did not like the sound of it. I am still working on getting alternate picking ("AP") together.
* At slower tempos economy picking sounds awesome to me, and it adds an unpredictable factor in tone which I really like. However at fast tempos, I think tone is a bit ruined when you disrupt the down-up-down-pattern. To me, the coolest sounding shredders all use alternate picking. *A neat alternative to both "AP" and economy picking is "legato and picking" (lesson) - which brings out a new useful tonal flavor + it makes fast passages much easier. |
