Just curious to know when to use economy picking when alternate picking? Is it a feel thing? Just watching speed kills 2 and there is a passage there where it starts with arpeggios then on the high E string he does 15th fret, 14 and 12 repeat on B string then G string and he starts all of them with a upstroke!!

I personally do whatever feels the most natural for the particular riff or solo. I think some licks would also flow better when starting on an upstroke, for example it would be easier to upstroke the 1st string, and then downstroke the 2nd string, as opposed to downstroking the 1st string and then upstroking the 2nd string. smile.gif

It's definitely a feel thing smile.gif You need to know what you think that would go best in a certain situation - for instance, alternate picking is much more rhythmic and aggressive, while economy picking is more flowing and less aggressive.

It all depends on the mood and context, so my best thought would be... experiment smile.gif See what YOU like and use things in accord to this idea.

I'm working on some Rick Graham Pentatonic sequences and man does he mix it all up, with hammer-ons and pull-offs, hybrid picking and economy picking along with his Alt picking. It takes brain power and obedient fingers!

I started out with economy picking - but realised I did not like the sound of it. I am still working on getting alternate picking ("AP") together.

* At slower tempos economy picking sounds awesome to me, and it adds an unpredictable factor in tone which I really like. However at fast tempos, I think tone is a bit ruined when you disrupt the down-up-down-pattern. To me, the coolest sounding shredders all use alternate picking.

*A neat alternative to both "AP" and economy picking is "legato and picking" (lesson) - which brings out a new useful tonal flavor + it makes fast passages much easier.

The great thing about economy picking is that you don't have to replace alternate picking or give it up, as some people worry about. Just use it when you want, to make certain runs flow easier. It takes a lot of playing around to allow your pick to find its own way around things.

The most important thing is to develop a feel for what is contextually fit to a given situation smile.gif Usually, we tend to play what we know, but technique should be practiced in respect to what you want to obtain from a certain musical context.

from a certain point on, in your life as a player, you should practice technique in a contextual way. By that, I mean that you shouldn't practice exercises for the sake of being able to play a certain technique, rather study the technique in accord with the piece you want to perform or write smile.gif That is an approach which will maximize your results - you will be able to utilize that technique in a musical context, which is pretty much the ultimate goal of technique. My two cents smile.gif I am reading Victor Wooten's book 'The music lesson' and boy did I learn things...
