Economy Picking, When to use Economy Picking

Just watching speed kills 2 and there is a passage there where it starts with arpeggios then on the high E string he does 15th fret, 14 and 12 repeat on B string then G string and he starts all of them with a upstroke!! I personally do whatever feels the most natural for the particular riff or solo. I think some licks would also flow better when starting on an upstroke, for example it would be easier to upstroke the 1st string, and then downstroke the 2nd string, as opposed to downstroking the 1st string and then upstroking the 2nd string. It all depends on the mood and context, so my best thought would be... experiment See what YOU like and use things in accord to this idea. I am still working on getting alternate picking ("AP") together. * At slower tempos economy picking sounds awesome to me, and it adds an unpredictable factor in tone which I really like. However at fast tempos, I think tone is a bit ruined when you disrupt the down-up-down-pattern. To me, the coolest sounding shredders all use alternate picking. A neat alternative to both "AP" and economy picking is "legato and picking" (lesson) - which brings out a new useful tonal flavor + it makes fast passages much easier. Just use it when you want, to make certain runs flow easier. It takes a lot of playing around to allow your pick to find its own way around things. By that, I mean that you shouldn't practice exercises for the sake of being able to play a certain technique, rather study the technique in accord with the piece you want to perform or write That is an approach which will maximize your results - you will be able to utilize that technique in a musical context, which is pretty much the ultimate goal of technique.
