Ive been playing guitar for 4 years on my own with the help of two books. "Metal Lead guitar 1,2" of troy stetina.I really love playing the guitar and i really want to get better at it.The thing is that im realy~ lost. i dont have a standar style i like playin some blues then some metal then just rocking.I dont know where to start, or to continue for the stuff i need to know. the exercises i need to make and they way to write a riff or a solo., i think im barely on the intermediate level. i recently moved so i dont have my stuff to record and upload a sample of my playing so you would tell me your opinion and what level of lessons i should start following. i hope you will help me and "fix" my guitar playing! What should we practice ? When we start feeling like a headless chicken, then that is our time to narrow our focus instead of widening it. There is a phrase ' You cannot chase 2 rabbits at once'.. so just pick a few small areas (or even just one) where you would like to improve ? How is your musical ear ? One thing that helped me massively was taking the basic power chord shape (root + 5th) and trying to learn any songs using those basic shapes. I used to try and figure out Iron Maiden, Guns n Roses songs when I was younger and that really helped my musical ear, my rhythm and getting the right tone/palm muting etc.. Using that approach can help in many wasy.. it can improve those things I mentioned above but it is also enjoyable, which is crucial to staying motivated with guitar. Maybe write a small list of things you really enjoy.. guitar should be fun and it doesn't have to be an endurance, if you keep the fun element then you always stand a better chance of staying motivated. Well there are some techniques i would like to master one of them is shredding, and i will definately try to train my ear.When i get back home ill record some of my playing so you will tell me your opinion and where i should start and what level im around,genres i like are symphonic metal like nightwish or epica , celtic metal ,rock , hard rock like AC/DC led zeppelin,i really like those soloes that have a lot sustain and are so hmmm EPIC!buy i cant get to play like this :S !.Ill think of more stuff to add in the list too!.By the way my gear is an LTD explorer EX-260SM a fender frontman 100w AMP and a Zoom G2.Thank you again and Happy holidays everyone! Nobody did it in 1-2 years, it requires some work. Main thing is you are serious about it, already learned a lot, some scales, practicing hard and have very decent gear that is ready for the stage. What scales did you practice so far? Have you looked in to some music theory so far? This can help you a lot. Also, do you practice with the metronome, what do you practice etc..? I havent looked much about theory i practice the Minor pentatonic scale , the prygian mode , the mixolydian one and the prygian diminished no i dont practice with a metronome much but with backing tracks on youtube.i learn the guitar parts of some songs that i like and now i started doing daily some exercises from troy stetinas book Speed mechanics!
