GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Best Technique Poll !

Posted by: Ben Higgins Apr 25 2012, 08:53 AM

Hey Guys, I was thinking about all of us sharing our opinions of who's got the best technique (in our opinions) for different categories like picking, sweeping, tapping, legato etc.. and any more you can think of.

It doesn't necessarily have to be the cleanest, fastest or most technically proficient.. it's just what you think is the best and like to hear, ok ? I'll start off.

Alternate Picking - John McLaughlin

Here's why: So relaxed, comes from out of nowhere, ultra fast bursts, the ultimate picking technique to aspire to in my opinion.

Sweep Picking - Michael Angelo Batio

He makes it look so easy and it's so perfect !

Legato - Joe Satriani

I'll leave it there. Please share some of your ideas and suggestions smile.gif

Sadly I'ma have to be the one to say this... laugh.gif

That about does it all for me in a 1:19m shred, but I'd say I still think Jason Becker had the best sweeps.

As much as I love Jason, I am going to have to give Sweeping Credit to Shane Gibson. Because he and Rusty Cooley need to duke it out to see who can sweep better.

Shane Gibson- Emo Village Pillage

This guy is the world's fastest guitarist. His name is John Taylor. On a completely unrelated note if you want to hear Joe from Family Guy, 5:56-6:03.

Cool stuff, guys smile.gif

Don't forget to put the technique by the guitarist's name so we know what you're putting them up for smile.gif

I dunno man, 331erock is ridiculously good...

His sweeping and tapping is just clean as hell.

I don't think there's such thing as "best", but here are my favorites, from the music I listen to.
They're not necessarily the fastest in their technique, but IMHO they show the best use of technique (best to listen to, for me at least):

Alternate picking - Paul Gilbert
Sweeping - Yngwie Malmsteen
Legato - Joe Satriani
Bends - Gary Moore
Vibrato - Steve Vai
Chicken picking - Albert Lee
Fingerstyle - Tommy Emmanuel
Pinch harmonics - Zakk Wylde
Natural harmonics - Antoine Dufour
Whammy bar harmonics - Joe Satriani
Downstrokes - James Hetfield
Riffing - Ritchie Blackmore
Odd-time riffing - John Petrucci
Guitar noise ( tongue.gif ) - Matthew Bellamy

And since I put so many categories, I have to add the ultimate champion of the special technique, which is called... well, just watch the video tongue.gif
