When using the lydian mode, do you play a half step below the tonic. If a song is in the key of A, would you use Ab lydian?

Just play A major with a sharp 4th. ie D#

If the song is in the key of A major the lydian mode there would be on the IV and that is D Lydian.
If you need the Lydian mode out of Amajor simply sharp the 4th note (D into D#). You are then in the key of Emajor.
