This band is in other dimension, I think a 10 is not enough for them wink.gif

Great review, this album is incredible, they are ever in progress, they grow up and still getting better! DT rules!

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion May 10 2008, 11:37 AM

I would certainly not give it 10 as Awake is better but it's my second favourite DT album. Ministry of Lost Souls is my favourite DT song as I don't class Space Dye Vest as their song. You didn't mention Ministry of Lost Souls sad.gif and it is incredible.

Posted by: The Uncreator May 10 2008, 09:04 PM

Yes I didnt, It is an amazing song, the lyrics are fantastic, and I think the Vocals are some of Labries best yet smile.gif

Excellent review. Probably my 4th or 5th favorite Dream Theater album.

I agree with what you said about Mike Portnoy. He is easily the best drummer out there, at least IMO. Like you said, I love how he is not just there to provide a live metronome like many drummers, he is actually like another melody maker if that makes any sense, like he contributes to the sound of the music, not just the feel of it like nearly all drummers.

And James LaBrie is an amazing singer, end of story, I don't understand why people don't like him. His voice may not sound rough like Russell Allen (many people compare him to this guy), but as far as I can tell, NO ONE fits Dream Theater's style better than James LaBrie.

The only thing I though this album was just a TINY bit weak on was originality from within the band. I can't really explain this though.

If I HAD to pick (this being extremely hard) one song on the album as my favorite it would probably have to be Constant Motion, the solo is just incredible every single time.

Man, I though the album was unlike any I've heard before, I though that Forsaken was just mindblowingly beautiful, and in Repentance where they got other musicians to speak there regrets for the end of the song, Man it was just perfect, and how it ends with "The truth is the truth, And all you can do is live with it"....Sent chills up my spine! and the solo to it is one of my favorites from JP, So tastefully done.

Anyway, Any Dream Theater album is amazing, So its all good smile.gif

Oh yes, I am definately not saying that Dream Theater is not original, trust me I am a huge fan, I just felt that they were not extremely original within themselves if that makes any sense. Like most of the songs seemed similar to songs that only they have done in the past on previous albums, when usually Dream Theater albums always have a brand new twist. Anyway, I probably need to listen to the album more before saying something like that, the only songs I have listened to like 100 times so far are In the Presence of Enemies, Constant Motion, The Dark Eternal Night, Forsaken, Ministry, and Prophets, nevermind the only song I really haven't listened to more than maybe 3 times is Repentance, and since you keep bringing the song up, it must be really good, I need to listen more.

Yes, Repentance is a DT favorite of mine! smile.gif

awesome album.

i saw this album played live and it was mind blowing.. In presence of Enemies is my favorite track .. part 1 and 2.. although 2 is probably my favorite smile.gif

Posted by: Tsarpf May 22 2008, 09:37 PM

In the presence of enemies pt 1&2 are so damn beautiful, epic, perfect, long enough etc. The first solo in the part one is just mind blowing, especially when I heard it live.. there it was far more than just mind blowing, I almost started to cry, which is pretty rare to me.. and totally new thing to happen when listening to music.

I knew the solo would be great, so I was prepared to take a video of it.. I watch that video abouts once a month (only!), to not to "over use" it. It still feels SO great tongue.gif

almost the same thing with the ending of the Ministry of the Lost Souls.

Nice review btw biggrin.gif good thing you gave it a 10 tongue.gif

Dream Theater defines progressive rock. There is no other band like them. They are one of those rare bands where everybody in the band is not just good, they are all virtuosos! Portnoy is in the same league as Neil Peart, making those two the best drummers to ever hit the stage. I don't even need to talk about John Petrucci...but I will; tone, technique, note selection...I'm amazed these guys can remember their parts! Jordan Rudess is a keyboard wizard with extremely advanced harmonic capabilities...the unison lines that he and Petrucci play together are mind boggling! I love James LaBries' voice, and vocal range, a true singer! John Myung is incredible, though too low in the mix, it seems like. But, yeah, the planets had to be aligned and fate had to step in to create such a one-off group of musicians who continue to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with their individual instruments.

I will not agree this time man. (personal opinion)Systematic chaos is probably not only the worst album of Dream theater but a really bad album overall. It has songs about vampires (omg) Evanescence like structure and if this is a 10 then Awake,Images.... and Metropolis pt 2 should get a 57 tongue.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Jun 25 2008, 07:23 PM

Vampires are cool though laugh.gif

I cant think of a song with "Evanescence" structure either. The album to me is fantastic!

Posted by: Vasilis Jun 26 2008, 09:03 AM

Yes I agree vampires are cool. But Dream theater writing about vampires its like mayhem writing cheesy love songs. I mean its not their style. Its not like i don't like it but I don't think it suits them.By saying Evanescence of course I mean forsaken it reminds them a lot.

This album is AWESOME!

"in the presence of enemies" is my favourite and also "The Ministry Of Lost Souls".

A friend sometime said "Oh they don´t have any feeling",

He is crazy of course, and deaf. I think HE doesn´t have any feeling tongue.gif

I can agree with that...but, maybe the ''vampire'' theme came in a wrong time.
Now (for last year or two),all sorts of media are bombing us with vampires from the Twilight saga, and it's really too much.
Maybe you have an irritation towards that particular topic like me biggrin.gif

The album is good, but in my personal opinion, it doesn't come to close to an album like
Scenes from a memory or Images and words. DT is in ''constant motion'' for sure, but sometimes
the motion is really small (like this album for instance) and needs to be looked retrospectively, to
see the full range of motion.

Nevertheless, I'm a huge fan for years now, I can always listen to this album wink.gif

edit:

Now I see the topic is rather old...sorry for that biggrin.gif
