Great review, man. Picking a favorite song off of this album is VERY hard. wink.gif

I think I'll do a review of either Ride the Lightning, cause it's so underrated, or And Justice, cause it's my favorite.

My favorite off the album as well. I think someone should do there Christmas lights to this tune! TSO is great, but would'nt this be cool!

Great album! Love the vocals and riffs

btw... This is not directly to you, but I think pretty much all reviers here get a little carried away tongue.gif come on, how can everything be a 10/10? Even though it's GREAT doesn't mean it's the best ever made by any band ever..

Posted by: Bedlam Dec 21 2007, 03:18 AM

This was their best album. And Justice for all comes in a close second. I may sound nutty, but I wasn't much of a fan of the Black album mellow.gif

yeah its really hard they all are great songs in many aspects. A Ride The Lightning review would be nice, i also agree with the fact that the album is a little underrated.

Yeah you have a good point. When Im deciding the score of the album I try to first point out some flaws and that way subtract points to it, but i didnt really find significant flaws for this one. biggrin.gif

The Black Album was very comercial oriented i think. I mean, like 5 videos were realeased from the album and since the Black Album Metallica stopped being "underground" imo.

I don't know...I mean, yeah, the only songs played on the radio are from the Black Album ( every once in a while I'll hear "For Whom the Bell tolls" or "One") , but thats just 'cause a bunch of wussies run it. But I wouldn't say that they were underground before the Black Album. They certainly gained more popularity, but just think of how many people hate Metallica now because they "sold out."

Posted by: muntahunta Dec 21 2007, 09:24 AM

i dont think they "sold out" metallica are my favourite band and the only thing they did is write stuff that they liked playing, which to me is the opposite of selling out.
i'd like to say im going to be a complete metalhead until im 96 on my deathbed but im willing to bet my music tastes will grow just like metallica's have as they got older.

but yea, MOP is brilliant.

Posted by: The Uncreator Dec 21 2007, 11:57 AM

I agree with Muntahunta on this, Metallica never sold out, they always wrote what they wanted, instead of St. Anger, they could have made Ride The Lightning or Master Of Puppets clone, but they didnt, and to me, making a copy of any of there previous would be selling out, i commend metallica for having the balls to put whatever they hell they want out on the market.

I understand what your saying but if the reviewer thinks its worthy of a ten then why not? biggrin.gif

Great enthusiastic review m8 smile.gif I`m not heavily into Metallica but this album and the Black Album are in my CD collection for sure, in fact I `m gunna dig it out after this review! Thanks cool.gif

O yeah, that's the way I feel completely. Notice how I put sold out in quotes. tongue.gif I was just commenting on how many people say that they have sold out.

I admire them highly for just not really giving a s*** about what people think. I mean people critisize St. Anger all the time, but it was just pretty much a middle finger to every one who said that they had lost their talent.

Posted by: muntahunta Dec 21 2007, 05:58 PM

i actually liked some of st anger. some kind of monster and unnamed feeling were pretty good.

I don't know...it's like some parts of St. Anger could be cool, but it's like they're always ruined by either the horrible drums or singing. Just me though.

i choose disposable heroes because i dont like how the lyrics are singed, i mean, if i were to read the lyrics without listening to the song it would be like "wow awesome lyrics!", but when i heard them through the song, i didnt like the way they sounded.

Well did you like the black album or any of Metallica stuff?I cant say that i ever disliked puppets but i started out on the black album first and when i went back and listened to ride the lightening for the first time i hated it tongue.gif ,then once i gave it time to listen to all the old stuff grew on me and i became an obsessed Metallica fan and had to learn every song on every album all the up to load .After that i cant say i ever had a desire to learn any of the other stuff like on Reload and St Anger sad.gif .

Lots of music is like that though ,the first time you listen to it you may not like it then if you give it some time your mind can completly change. It could be though that you just dont like that style of music i dont know tongue.gif

This album has been released 22 years ago...

At that time, I was in junior high, and there were people with "master of puppets" t-shirt s and it scared me a little bit. Same thing with all these Iron Maiden pictures. I was wondering what was the meaning of all these pictures. Back then, I didn't realize that all this was just part of the folklore and members of this band were just ordinary people playing music.

Anyway, it's interesting to see that those old metallica albums are still popular. Me, I listened to them so many times over the years that I can't stand them anymore!!

This is one of the first Metallica albums I bought when I was still in school. great job on the reveiw and good album smile.gif

Posted by: Goliath Jan 7 2008, 10:51 PM

This is a great album, second only to ... And Justice, and I will contest that "Dyers Eve" is possibly the greatest Metallica song ever recorded and it was the last song that I would really consider Metallica a thrash band. The fell to Hard Rock w/ Black and then to Alt Rock w/ Load/Reload/St. Anger.

This is a fantastic album though, no doubt, but I'd give the bass a 10 and the guitars an 8, and the 8 is only because James is such a fantastic rhythm man, Kirk will always be a very watered down Dave Mustaine and is one of the only guitarists I can think of that got worse later in his career. The riffs are brutal on these albums, but the leads leave a little to be desired.

Posted by: ibanezkiller Mar 31 2008, 02:33 AM

In my opinion, Metallica is the greatest band and MASTER OF PUPPETS is one of the greatest albums! Orion is my favorite song on there!

Very, very good album but I agree with you that their best is Ride The Lightning biggrin.gif

Ride The Lightning I prefer over this album. Disposable Heroes is my favourite track followed by Damage Inc and Orion. I'd give the album 8.5/10 and Ride The Lightning 9/10. I don't give anything 10/10 however. Great album by a once great band.

I'm afraid i didn't like this album, i'm not entirely sure why but it just didn't do it for me no matter how many times i listened to it. My favorite album is probably ride the lightning

Posted by: steiner666 Sep 30 2008, 10:13 PM

Just wanted to post my two cents on this album here because, with all of my recent "metallica-bashing" in regards to their more recent releases, I really want to say a couple positive things about this band, as they once were.

This album is what made me want to play guitar, the solos in "Master of Puppets" blew my young mind away when I first heard them. I was also very inspired by "To Live is to Die", "Call of Cthulu" and "One" from their other releases in that golden era. I remember how Hammett and Hetfield used to always be the idols that I aspired to be as a young guitarist. And I thought that I'd never come close to their skill level.

However, as I improved (and as Metallica did effectively the opposite) I also started to listen to more advanced and heavier guitar players (first with bands such as Carcass, and then the Swedish invasion of Opeth and Arch Enemy among others) and set my sights progressively higher until I became the frustrated intermediate-ish player that I am today wink.gif

Great album though... I never much cared for Disposable Heroes of Damage Inc tho for some reason.

Posted by: Emir Hot Sep 30 2008, 10:20 PM

Master is great but my favorite is the first one

Posted by: Sircraigery Jan 28 2009, 02:54 PM

The title track is worst song on the album I think. It's got it's parts, but the verse riff just doesn't make sense, it's almost as if it doesn't belong (IMHO). But the intro, chorus, and clean riffs are totally kick ass.

The rest of the songs are much better, but still I agree that 'Kill 'Em All' was the best album to date for them.

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Jan 31 2009, 02:27 PM

I stopped listening to metallica after this album.. this is the last one cliff did before he died...

my 3rd favorite metallica album is this one...

1) Kill em all

2) ride the lightning

3) master

thats how i would rank them after that they went downhill

without cliff and dave they got soft

garage isnt bad, only because of the 11 minute tribute song they did for mercyful fate
