Hey!

I want a change in my gear. I'm currently running a BOSS GT-PRO into a Randall RH300G3, using the Randall head as a poweramp.
Now, I was thinking of getting a Sansamp PSA 1.1 as a preamp, and perhaps a G-Major for effects. Then the question, what do I put as a poweramp? I've been looking at Marshall 20/20, and Mesa 50/50, but I have really no knowledge or experience when it comes to poweramps.
I can tell you I want something versatile and something loud enough for a band situation, and still fine in a bedroom. I play everying from jazz fusion to metal (I love jazz fusion etc, but I'm in a metal band). I'm not the gear kind of guy, and I don't want to sit with knobs all day, which is basically why I want to change my gear away from the GT-PRO. If you have any tips on preamps, effects, poweramps or anything concering rack or the like, I'm eager to listen smile.gif

as a poweramp I know I'd want to have an ENGL 840/50 smile.gif

There are many brands and models
but I suggest you to contact Sansamp
and ask what do they think or suggest,
poweramp shouldn't color the tone but some does.
I have Mesa 2:90 atm (perhaps I'll sell it soon) and I had Mesa 50:50 before that,
both are great but I have a friend who likes old Peavey 50:50 a lot more. smile.gif

Price wise I think you've got a very large range from the Marshall 20/20 to the Mesa 50/50. TBH I struggle to see the Sansamp being in the same class as the Mesa and if you wanted to spend the sort of money on the Mesa plus the Sans I'd suggest considering spending more on the pre and less on the power.

As it stands and spending more on the pre - just for versatility maybe consider widening your net a bit and look at a Fractal Axe-fx pre? Much more expensive than the Sans but is perhaps much more versatile but may leave you fiddling with knobs which you don't want. It does good amp emulation and has bucket loads of effects pretty much all at a high or very high sound quality. Then sell the GT Pro and use that money plus a bit and get a poweramp like the 20/20?

Other preamps - Marshall's own pre, Mesa's various, Engl 530/540 (pretty simple guitarist friendly layout imho), Rocktron Prophesy (think Muris has/used to have one).

If however you're pushed for cash then the Marshall may work ok with the Sans - one thing I've heard is that the Sans works better with solid state poweramps though. Other power amps to look at - as Micke says Engl and I'd add VHT 2/50 and Carvin DCM.

To some extent I'd also suggest that you maybe match the sound type of any valve power amp and the pre. i.e. a Boogie power will lend itself best to a Boogie type sound and boogie type pre... Otherwise look at solid state powers that may colour the sound less.

Yeah, I think Tony is right in how to divide the costs on pre- vs poweramp. Spend more on the preamp, afterall that is where the sound is formed and shaped. The poweramp doesn't do much more than amplify and add some texture.

A cheap preamp through an expensive poweramp will still sound cheap. With an expensive (and hopefully good) preamp the poweamp will set the limit.

Thanks for the comments guys!
About the Mesa, I found it used at about the same price as the Marshall. smile.gif I never thought the SansAmp was considered cheap though, I've always considered it a solid piece of gear. I think I'll look into some more preamps then before making up my mind, and keep an eye open for any great offers popping up. Any other preamps I should consider? The Fractal Axe-fx seems a bit much (I'd like to buy one used, and there is no way Ill find this one used, or can afford one new).
Price range? I got 2200 US, but I dont plan on using everything. What Ill use depends on how interesting I get in what I find smile.gif

The Mesa sounds like a bit of a bargain then - though you might have to add the cost of new tubes.

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that the Sansamp was cheap - just possibly not of the same class as the Mesa.

Other possible preamps apart from those already mentioned - Mesa Tri-axis, Yamaha DG1000, VHT GP3 (if you can find one), Soldano SP77.

I think there's a modular pre-amp from Randall btw where you can switch in units to change the voicing/tone of the amp. I kind of remember it as one that looked ok but could end up being really expensive once you'd bought a few modules. Not a new idea - Seymour Duncan did a modular amp way back at the start of the 90s.

Most of these have their own distinct character sound - the Engl 540 and 560s for instance do European Hi Gain (particularly the 560 - the 530 is maybe a bit more subtle), the Mesas is more US Hi Gain. The Yamaha is a digital but a very good one - Allan Holdsworth has had DG1000s in his rig for a number of years. Most of them will do a good clean channel which you could always overdrive as well.

FWIW I use an Engl 530 with an Eventide Eclipse. I don't however use a power amp though as I go via an ADC to the desk or similar. At the time the 530 offered good value for money; the 560 was lovely but I didn't need its versatility and it was expensive; Mesas in Europe are just expensive; couldn't find anywhere near that had the Yamaha/Soldano/VHT to try out...

One thing you may want to get in addition is a rack power conditioner like a Furman. (I'm assuming that everything is going to sit in a 19'' rack.) Well worth having imho and they're not that expesive compared with rack gear generally.

I think someone posted a link ages ago to a site where you can here mp3s of various amp heads plus a number of pre amps. If you can find it it may be worth a look. I've had a quick search and didn't find it though - sorry.
