GMC Forum _ Bogdan Radovic (Bass & Beginner Guitar) _ Some Questions

Posted by: Fusar Apr 3 2010, 01:17 AM

Hey Bogdan!

Once in your Bass Syllabus thread, I told you that I was thinking to start playing the bass...
Now I think I'll buy one for the summer holidays, there I'll have about three month to get into this new adventure!
When I was in Cologne in the musicstore, I checked out the bass gear, and I liked the feeling of the Fender Precision Basses. As I have no experience, I'm asking you if they are ok (I know that they are absolute beginner ones wink.gif) for their price?
Furthermore I want to join a band after the summer holidays, what do you think: is it possible, if i play for about 30minutes every day for three month, to have the base to join a band?
If I'm really into the bass, I can take courses after the summer holidays...but this is far away wink.gif

Hello Fusar! I'm really sorry for a delay in answering this as I somehow missed the thread...

I'm really glad you are getting into bass playing. Regarding bass purchase, If you tried Fender Precision bass and you like it (its comfortable to play and has a good low action) you should get it. Generally I would suggest a Fender Jazz bass instead simply because it has two single pickups so its a little more versatile regarding sound. Precision bass is good in what it does - raw rock sound! smile.gif Just try out jazz basses to in order to see if they are comfortable to you also and then choose. There is no wrong choice there - both type of basses are legendary.

If you have experience on guitar, learning how to play bass will be easier as notes are in the same places, same theory applies etc. In my estimate if you can afford 30 mins a day practice you will get down the basic technique in 3 months for sure. I would recommend practicing fingerstyle from beginning which may seem harder at start but you will get into it. So yes in 3 months you should be able to join a band (with hard practice and with nice previous guitar playing skills). There is a lot in bass technique etc, but bass is also a straightforward instrument to start on - lines can be very very simple yet very very effective (roots only lines and similar which are found in legendary hit rock songs).

Cheers and let me know if you have any further questions and also for lessons recommendations. Syllabus is not updated with my latest lessons.

Hey Bogdan, don't worry, I just wanted to remind you of the thread before I would have forgotten myself about it tongue.gif
I also had a Jazz Bass in my hands, it felt fine as well, but I was looking for a bass under 200 euro...however, I realize now that a Jazz Bass is only 30 euros more, so then I'll go for this one ;-)
I'm aware that after 3 months I'll not be the next bass god, but I think I'll be able to play some nice, easy bass lines smile.gif 30 minutes of practice are realistic, I'll always get them, maybe in the holidays I could more, 1 or 2 hours per day, but that's only speculation!
With the bass, I'll buy a book (Rock Bass, it's a German one, don't know if you know it?) and I'll use your lessons as well (if I'm at this point, I'll ask specifically about lessons). And after the summer holidays, I decided to get a guitar instructor, who also plays the bass, so he'll be able to give me some live tips as well! smile.gif

Sounds like a good plan Fusar! Check out the Jazz bass to see if you like it more. Generally precision one (with a P pickup) is also a nice choice. I'm pretty sure you'll manage to pull it off in 3 months with some nice practice. Let me know if you need any help with the bass lessons here. I can recommend them and further explain topics if its needed.

Cheers,
Bogdan

Hello my friend smile.gif
I haven't bought a bass yet, maybe you remember that I was thinking 'bout a Fender. Now I have the occasion to buy an Ibanez GSR200 on second hand for 200 euro (new: 250). It is two years old. I'll be able to play on it before buying it.
What do you think? Have you heard about this bass? Is the price ok? If I try it, on what should I pay attention as a bass newbie?
