I see this forum is dominated by guitar driven music, which isn't surprising really. Surely though there are some members who like a bit of hip-hop? I'm not talking about stuff in the charts and on the radio, which is almost always awful. I'm talking old school rap as well as newer artists. What albums do you consider classics?

I absolutely love NaS - Illmatic. It is easily the best rap album ever. Everything from the beats to the lyrics are brilliant. Other albums that I really like are Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), El-P - Fantastic Damage, Non Phixion - The Future is Now. Then you've got old school rap such as Chubb Rock, Pete Rock, Sugarhill Gang etc.

My friend just lent me a CD by a guy called DJ Spinbad, who is bloody incredible. He basically remixes loads of famous tracks (such as NaS - Halftime/Sugarhill Gang - Rappers Delight/Run DMC - Walk This Way) and blends them all in together. This guy is seriously great. He must be using something like 4 decks at a time. The album is called Fabriclive 14 and I strongly recommend it to anyone.

Any other fans?

Oh yes.. I like rap and hip-hop that's not on the so called "Top-Charts", and that's driven by feeling and messages instead of money and booze..

NaS as you said, and norwegian Madcon is awesome, because they have a sense of melody, and it's not something everyone can make.

As long as it's not something like this....... Which is crap. It's processed, steamy crap! (Edit: In my opinion, that is rolleyes.gif )

I like older hip hop and rap and most songs that are not on the mass consumer radar. The chart stuff is awful

I like some atmosphere and sage francis. Some Looptroop aswell (swedish band), but I can't say I've listened a lot to it the last few years. Some beastie boys is nice aswell. There are some amazing lyricists in hip hop.

Stuck Mojo is about the closest thing to rap/hip hop that I can tolerate.

When I saw this I thought it was going to be another "Hip Hop/rap is horrible" thread laugh.gif laugh.gif We've had a few of those which is fine but it's nice to see a positive one smile.gif

For the whole of the 90's pretty much I was very much into Hip Hop. Still am to a point, but not so much now that the guitar has taken over my life. Some of my faves are Queen Latifah, Grandmaster Flash, Sugarhill Gang, Public Enemy, Tupac, Eminem, Wu Tang Clan, Run DMC, Common, Jay Z. The "chart" stuff is great in the clubs but not really what I like to listen too if I'm cruising in the truck. I tend to like the lyicists like Eminem, Common, Tupac even Kanye West has some very creative and deep lyrics.

As for albums I have quite a few Snoop Dog - Doggystyle (not really a fan but this album is crazy), Eminem - Marchal Mathers LP, NWA - Straight outta Compton, Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu=Tang, Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions... , Run DMC - Raising Hell, NAS - Illmatic, Lauryn Hill - the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Grandmaster Flash - The Best of... oh I could just go one and on actually.

In my entire life, I have thought every instance of rap/hip hop sucked beyond description, was totally mindless, lacking any merit whatever. With one exception.

The only rap song I have ever cared for....

TI, which I have never heard of was on SNL last night. I kind of dig it and the guitar playing makes it even better.

That's pretty terrible. Guitars and hip-hop just shouldn't mix

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=h0K9hzDf_78 - This is however amazing. One of the best rap songs ever written. Great beat, good flow and meaningful lyrics.

Yeah, I did not listen to the clip all the way through before posting. It sounded better on my TV set up last night. The sound on that particular clip is shoddy at best.

If you liked that you should check out the whole album; it's really good.

Another of my favourite songs:

Non Phixion - Black Helicopters

Wu-Tang Clan - Shame on a Nigga
