For me the bands that really got me into metal are Opeth, Killswitch Engage and Trivium.
What bands got you into metal?

Mine would be Metallica ( back in the old days), Pantera, Iron Maiden( even though I havn't even come close to listening to all of their albums)

Ofcourse Metallica.Also Megadeth and Pantera .

Iron Maiden when I was 12-13 years old. I got all their studio albums including that Eddie box thingie and some live/best of CD's. I also got Maiden DVD's and tons of posters.

Arch Enemy, In Flames and Children of Bodom was like a bridge into more extreme stuff. I got sick of those bands after a couple of months.


Then I discovered Opeth. Opeth is really amazing and I still love them today.
It was kind of a big step for me at the time to go from the cliché riffs of In Flames and Bodom to the heavier and darker style of Opeth. The vocals were also a bit unusal at the time.
(In Flames and Bodom fans, this is just my own opinion)


And the final step in my evolution of metal were The Legion, Ragnarok and Darkthrone.
A local music store was closing, so their prices were only 25% of the normal price. My band mate bought Darkthrone's: A blaze in the northern sky, Under a funeral moon and Transilvanian Hunger. Haha, this is so funny, becuase these three albums are Darkthrone's best. They are pure classics. He didnt know what band it was, he only bought them becuase the covers were cool, so it was just a coincidence.

The day after I bought The Legion - Unseen to Creation and Ragnarok - Blackdoor miracle. Freakin super amazing albums. I did not know what kind of bands this was, I just randomly bought it.

It was pure magic when me and my band mate were listening to A Blaze in the northern for the first times.
Seriously, there was magic flowing trough the air. This was finally something new, something we had never heard before. This was our introduction to black metal.


(For those who didnt know already, Darkthrone and Ragnarok are black metal bands from Norway, and The Legion is swedish black metal)

Megadeth. My all time favorite band ever.

basically bands like Nirvana paved me into wanting heavier music. From there i went two directions i listened to the band Disturbed and to Classic rock .. from classic rock i listened to The Scorpians and Maiden and Megadeth and stuff like that. From Disturbed i moved into Killswitch, In Flames, Trivium. from there to more nu metal bands and death metal, Opeth, Nile, threat Signal, 3 Inches of blood and so on

First it was Metallica. Then came Pantera, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Ozzy. After that it all snowballed.

Pantera, The Absence, and Emperor for me.

Bought of all of Pantera's albums after reading about dimebag in guitar world and it was well worth checkin him out. The power of his riffs amaze me. The Absence was because a friend of mine had me listen 2 them in his car and that got me into melodic death and death metal which eventually led me to check out emperor, there compositions absolutely amaze me

I think it was Metallica when I was 14. Then I was browsing through websites and stumbled upon progressive metal and found out about Dream Theater. I loved them from therefort. My friend started getting into harder and faster stuff and introduced me to Naglfar(swe). I didnt like them back then. Then after about a year of browsing through prog metal, there came fort Opeth and got me into death metal in general. Bought a morbid angel heretic album. The rest is history.

When I was about 7 or so one of my brothers got me into Ministry for awhile but that didnt last long as I never really got into music at that age. When I was about 10 or so and just started intermediate school my brother got me into stuff like Tool, Slipknot, Korn and Soilwork which I thought was really heavy especially considering no one else in my school listened to any kind of metal.

After I started high school at 12 I started to get into stuff like Slayer, Megadeth, Cradle of filth, 8 Foot Sativa and Necrophobic... After that it really didnt take me long at all to get into the really good stuff like Opeth, Darkthrone, Burzum and Dimmu Borgir.

These days I hate Korn, Slipknot and Cradle Of Filth and very bored of Slayer. I am very glad though that I never really listened to any terrible pop music or music they played on TV... Infact the only band I am ashamed of listening to was The Offspring but at the time I was too young and stupid to realise how horrible they were.

Offsprings is decent. Atleast they didnt take there fame seriously like any other pop bands at there time.

I wouldnt really know as I was a tiny wee fella when I listened to them so I had no idea about the band themselves. I saw half a clip on TV not long ago of their new stuff and I honest thought it was complete rubbish. Mind you my brother is into them so they cant be all bad.... He helped me get into some good stuff like ministry when I was real young too, Helped that he grew up in the 80's metal period..

I think you're the first one I've seen that listens to Saxon! They're pretty amazing. Those other bands you mentioned aswell, of course

i have to admit that i saw trivium's pull harder on the strings of your martyr on the tele. I was just amazed and completly opened my eyes to a different world of music. From there its just been great

What's truly amazing with them is that if you listen to their latest record from 2007 and one of the old ones from the 80's they have kept the very foundation in their sound. They still sound like Saxon plain and simple. And they were one of the founders of NWOBHM so in my book they earn plenty of attention.

Another band like Saxon that got too little attention is Tygers of Pan Tang. Great band but they have a limited group of fans, it's a shame really.
