Hi Gab!
First thank you for accepting to be my instructor. As I said a big influence for me is Joe Satriani because I love his songs very emotionals. Nevertheless I was first rather influenced by bands such as Green Day, The Offsprings, Sum 41 playing loud chords. But now I also love Clapton's songs, Guns and Roses' and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (whan John Frusciante was still in).
Now here are my strenghts and weaknesses:
Strong points :
-I like to compose songs and I have got quiete creativity I think
-I am able to play easy solos with alternate picking (technique I use all the time)

Weak points :
-Solfege : I mean the knowledge of the scales mostly (even if I did do solfege when I learned the piano but I have forgotten almost everything but the notes)
-Palm mute, rythm with muted strings etc
-And of course all the other techniques used by more advanced players (sweep picking, tapping...)

Now let me show you some "songs" I wrote (just solo guitar)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAXMfKtki_A
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC5wmpgFumo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJdNc_nHpBU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyojiU86X6U
(sorry for the bad audio/video quality)

And other solos or kind of:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TV_jj7bNivc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eO2EUSZZVOc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWI_1_IxeXQ

I am sorry but I don't have videos of rythm guitar but I maybe I will do one today or tommorow to show you that it is probably a weak point.
That's why I think you can help me on that point and maybe correct also bad habits if you see for example bad positions of my hands on the videos I posted etc... I would like to be turned towards lessons that can help me acknowledging some basis I don't have but also improving my playing learning new tricks. I think I also would be able to make more videos so as to be followed in my progresses.

Tell me if you want more informations or videos,

Good day!

Hi Romain! Thanks for all the videos and info! We will work on those things that you need to work.

In the videos I noted that one of the things that could be improved in your playing is "feeling" and "expression". Your vibrato technique is weak now, and you could also use dynamics as an expression tool. This two things make Satriani's playing outstanding... Your compositions are on the right way, but you should work a bit more on simple and catchy phrases for the verses... sometimes it seems that you play to many notes or pick too many times per beat, while something simpler based on your idea could work better.

You should also review your right hand technique, the way you hold the pick looks weird, and your hand seems to be tensioned while you play. Try to relax your hand and also the whole arm.

Some important items about this technique.

• It basically means alternation between downstrokes and upstrokes
• It can also help your timing for funk rhythms.
• It lets you use your mind to other things since the motion can be automated.
• Get in the habit of holding the pick between your thumb and your forefinger.
• Keep the exposed area of the pick to a minimum. (for precision)
• Try to do the movements the smaller than possible.

Regarding your left hand, your fretting fingers look ok, but your thumb should be placed more centred to gain more force in your fingers for vibrato, bending and also to be able to play bigger stretches. Like this:

Attached Image

Regarding scales, what scales can you play in your guitar?

I will give you two lessons to work on the following days, if you like them, master them and record a video for this thread that can also be published at REC.

The lessons are:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Surfing-With-Satriani/ (for rhythm)

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/guitar_loves_piano/ (for expression)

Also, we have "Collaborations" here that you could join and work on the solos here with my feedback. Check out the ones that now available and join the more than you can! Creativity can be trained and keeping composing all the time is the key!

What you are proposing seems very useful thanks! I'll work on the weak points you pointed out and post the 2 videos this week.
Regarding scales however I didn't understand what you asked me. Did you mean which scales I know?
If this is the question I would say pentatonic (major or minor dont know) and major scales. Again I am not sure I understood your question maybe cause of my lack in solfege and theory...

Here is the first video concerning expression : I am sure I will be able to do better in the future thanks to your advices. I tried to play with my pick located between thumb and forefinger but I think there is still too much tension in my hand and arm.

Hi mate, thanks for the video! You are doing a very good job! I also think that you will be mastering this one with some more practice. Your right hand motion is more natural now, remember to make the movement from your wrist and also a bit from your elbow. Your vibrato is getting better, concentrate on making it even more consistent. Another thing to fix on this one is your timing, there are some phrases that are out of time, pay attention to it! wink.gif

Hi Gab, I fully agree with you because I felt that sometimes I was not really on the right tempo and I'll try to work on that too. Now would you like me to record the rythm guitar video first or to post another time the one I already did?

Here is now the second video (which I played not at full speed but 160bm instead of 175). My little brother filmed me so he zoomed sometimes on the right or left hand so as to better show you my playing. What do you think?

Hi Romain! Great video! This lesson is on the right way! You just need to keep on practicing it to train your right hand "only downstrokes" resistance to be able to play it tighter and with the arm more relaxed. Also the double string bend can be improved a bit. Besides that it's a great job! smile.gif

Excellent! I was also thinking on any of the Instrumental Rock lessons by him, because he combines rhythm with soloing very in the style of Satriani.

Hi Gab!
I have just posted a video (guitarlovespiano4) on the REC board, so you can watch it if you want.
By the way I didn't have much time to practice the summer tune but I think I will manage to do that this week-end.

Here is the summer tune. I figured out after the take that again I was not alwys in the good tempo but I think I improved it a little comparing to the other videos.

Hi Romain! Good job with this take! There are still some details regarding feeling to concentrate on but you are very close. Review that fast bend and reverse bend at 00:08. You don't reach the correct pitch and lose a bit the timing. Also many ofhter bends have the pitch issue, so you have to work on this technique. You vibrato is getting better, keep on working on it, trying to make it even more consistent. Check other guitar player which has good vibrato technique, as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Andy Timmons, and try to emulate their different vibratos.
Ok mate, these would be my comments for this take! Let me know if you have any question. wink.gif

Ok I'll try to pay attention to my bends and will look the guitar pro tabs in the future so as to be sure to get the right pitch. Concerning vibrato I keep on working on this to even if I slowed down a little on the guitar because I have got back problems :/
