Hey Pedro!

This here is your thread and I am happy to welcome you smile.gif I have noticed a few things after watching your video and here's what I have in mind:

- working on rhythm (your strongest side)
- basic techniques involving picking - alternate and legato
- articulation

These would help build up your technique so that we may tackle more personal stuff later on smile.gif

What do you think, mate?

Cosmin

First off Pedro - do you use a metronome? It will be necessary to use one in order to develop your understanding and feel for timing and groove - everything flows from there smile.gif

Let me know if you are comfortable with it, if not, we will start with tasks revolving around learning how to use it!

Yes Cosmin, I do own a Roland TU-80 and a Roland JS-8, both of which have a built in metronome, although I usually play along backing tracks...

Hey Pedro! Alright then smile.gif Let's see how your metronome abilities work, with this lesson right here:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Picking-Hand-Basics/

Please record it and we will discuss around it once you send me a video wink.gif

Hey Cosmin,

I need to get my theory strait... How come 8th notes and 8th note triples have different duration?!? I thought 8th note triples where 3 / 8 of a bar, but I learned in the lesson that they are in fact 3 / 12 of a bar, right?

I'm having some difficulty in recording the lesson because it's too damn hot here in Portugal and my smaller kid isn't sleeping that well.
I've just managed to practice it under an hour a day sad.gif

I'll not be home for the weekend so I'll only be able to post next week...

Pedro

Edit:
This is what I'm supose to train, right?

1-----2-----3-----4----- metronome
1--2--1--2--1--2--1--2-- 8th notes
1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3- 8th note triplets

Should I be training (recording) against the backing track or the metronome?
I find that using the backing track is easier tongue.gif

Hey Pedro!

That is indeed exactly what you have to record wink.gif Now the maths is simple smile.gif The 8th note triplets are shorter simply because you need to insert 3 equal notes in the same space in which you inserted 2 equal notes in the case of 8ths - correct?

Look at the tab you have drawn and the conclusion above, is visible with the naked eye biggrin.gif Good thing you wrote it, so now you can use it as a reference wink.gif

Darn heat, anyway, I super enjoyed Lisbon when I visited 10 years ago - my step aunt is Portuguese smile.gif

Let me know when you are ready man and of course if there are any other questions along the way, please do tell!

Hey Cosmin,

I'm alive biggrin.gif
Just put my younger one in bed and I'm going to practice for a couple of hours.
I'll try and record before the end of the week.

Hi Cosmin,

Sorry for the lack of feedback. I'm currently on vacation... I haven't played the guitar that much nor have I recorded the exercise I was supposed to... I did managed to get through the problems I was having with double triplets though.
I should not be able to record for the next 3 weeks, sorry sad.gif

Sorry again,
Pedro

Hi Cosmin,

I'm repeating myself but, I'm really sorry for the lack of feedback on my part. I hope you can forgive me...
Long story short, vacation, wife working out of the country, lack of motivation... No guitar for the last couple of months.
I'm starting to get back on track and if you are still willing to help me, I'll record the exercise you asked for this weekend.

Pedro

Hi Cosmin,

FINALLY! I managed to record the damned exercise =)
http://youtu.be/FNKP_ZzHhVA
http://youtu.be/N78eiEoptl4
http://youtu.be/NsFo4OILMfs

I need some help with the recordings... I'm using my videocam to record the video and my Roland JS8 to record the sound, but it takes me too long to sync the two. Any advice?

Thank you for your patience,
Pedro

Hey mate - you have some slight timing issues in the fast part at the end where you alternate 16th notes with 8th notes and the triplet part around 0:28 is a bit unsure. I think that if you work on this using the backing track provided, the musical environment should make you feel more comfortable.

Regarding the syncing - it looks like you did a great job, what are you using to sync the video and audio file? What software I mean?

Hey Cosmin,

Ok, I'll keep working on this one untill I get it right (I'm currently trying to use my lunch hour to practice guitar, because I'm running at night =P). I'll post as soon as I can.

I'm using 'Windows Live Movie Maker' =) I play both the sound from the cam and the sound from the JS8 and start to sync it manually by adjusting the start time of the JS8 until I think is perfect. Then I mute the cam sound and leave only the JS8 sound. This last videos were a bit easier because of the metronome.

Thanks,
Pedro

Hey mate - that sounds good to me smile.gif Please focus on taking care of those little issues so that we may move forward and regarding the syncing - you are doing it like everyone else does tongue.gif Now, you kind of gave yourself the answer wink.gif If you want to sync it without too much fuss, you need a landmark such as metronome counts either 4 or 8 before the backing track - usually all backing tracks have them, so it's no biggie. But otherwise, that's pretty much the way it's done smile.gif I would be curious to see a recording with the backing track for this lesson as well - what say you?
