I love progressive stuff, therefore i love Dream Theater, sooooo, im going to be getting paid this summer which means new CD's (and an Acoustic) for me, i really want another DT album, so which one shoud i get? I have Awake (old album) and Systematic Chaos (Newest album) already (i am a kinda new DT fan, just startedd listening to the last year) I enjoy both albums thouroughly so i dont know what to get, their older stuff or the newer stuff, can i get some help from people who have heard them?

Depends what your tastes are really - if you're into the more proggy stuff go for Images and Words or Scenes from a Memory, metal = Train of Thought/Octavarium. Although to be honest I'd recommend you get your hands on all of them at some point. My personal favourite is Images and Words - the outro to Learning to Live is still my favourite piece of music ever written.

That said, songs to look up (most on youtube):

Octavarium, Learning to Live, Lines in the Sand, The Spirit Carries On.

To be honest you can't really go wrong with a DT album, just some will take more time to get into than others - I still hate Train of Thought however sad.gif. Go for Images and Words or Scenes from a Memory - or even the Score live album. All good buys!

Images and words is a must have. Awake ( you already have) is their most "cold" album, just awesome.
Falling into infinity have some songs that will shook you! Scenes from a memory is a concept albums, and what can I say...simply poetic, and what a sound Petrucci have in this album! Six degrees of inner turbulence is their most experimental album, PHENOMENAL! Train of thought is heavy as stone, don't like petrucci's solo and rudess too, but the rhythms are awesome. Octavarium have a suite of 24 minutes (if I'm not wrong) of pure magic. Systematic chaos you already have...enjoy DT!!

I think Awake is my overall favorite, but any of Dream Theaters' stuff is awesome. On Scenes From a Memory, Petrucci pulls off a particularly incredible lick, (even for him), in one of the songs. I don't know which song, but, he harmonizes with himself with a really wild descending run that just leaves me scratching my head. The guy practiced for six hours or more each day, back when he was at Berklee. It really goes to show you that dedication can bring about excellence. John is one of the best there is!

Try Liquid Tension Experiment. They are an instrumental jazz fusion/progressive metal band that consist of Petrucci, Portnoy, Rudess (all of Dream Theater members), and Levin. Great stuff! I actually like to listen to LTE more than Dream Theater smile.gif, although 2 different bands altogether.

Yeah I'd have to say Images and Words or Scenes from a Memory, definitely their best imo.
Although all their albums are amazing, I think these two really stand out the most.

If I had to pick one album, I would get Images and Words. Then Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory. But you can't go wrong with any Dream Theater album, they are all insane.

Images & Words is an album I've never seen fail to amaze. Great melodies, very proggy compared to some of their later stuff. Very early 90's-ish, which is wonderful!
