Rusty Chops, why i am here

I have been playing guitar for about 13 years but had an attitude about it most of my life that held me back. I have developed several bad habits and am desperately trying to correct them. One of my main problems is I always improvise and never remember, so I rarely finish songs. I have a pretty good understanding of theory and harmony and can pretty much name a chord or scale given notes, but barely know any full songs. I signed up here mainly seeking guidance, and have the time to dedicate as i am disabled. I come from a classic rock background but over the years have gotten a strong love for funk and jazz. I love a challenge so i decided to join a metal band stupidly and have no background, they like my style but i run out of ideas. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated, and if there is any way I can contribute with my knowledge of chord structure, scales, and other theory i would be more than happy to help out those interested and take the time to find your way of learning. I’ve experienced it for a couple of reasons. Basically I think it falls back to that I’m working in an unstructured way and that I lack skills in getting the whole arrangement together with, bass, vocals, drums and when the fun becomes a struggle it’s easy to just give up. Find a structured way of working and stick to the plan! My solution was to record a simple take, an idea including all the parts and then I bring to my band and benefit from their skills - which is playing those other instruments - since they can perform much better than I ever could on the computer. The result that came out were good songs. Never exactly as I expected them to sound but with everyones flavor added it’s high quality songs. I just had to realize I was unable to finish it on my own, I had put the bar too high for myself. Bringing in the help I needed was my solution to the problem. I know that I am more likely to finish a song I am working on if I have the whole structure defined before I sit down and start recording it. Another thing which really helps is to find someone to collaborate with - that way you can write a riff, send it over to your buddy - he'll add another riff (etc) and soon you will have a song down! Glad you found our little Guitar ShangriLa here on the web As for writing in your metal band, your jazz/funk background can be a real advantage. I played in a band with a guy named Steve Flynn for a while (Gnostic) and he was in a band called Atheist for a bit and they were my first introduction to "Death Jazz". Essentially, taking beats like Bosso Nova, as well as chordal/modal structures common to jazz and incorporating them in to semi traditional Florida Death Metal. Check out some of their work via google search/itunes or what not. It might help you gain some insight in to using your existing background to push the limits of the "Metal Form". Many sub genres of Metal have very strict coda from which to draw. It's by expanding upon the existing language of the form that the form itself is renewed. So try doing things that are not very metal, and doing them in a metal way, eg. playing Weather Report tunes with blast beats and distortion, etc. Hope this helps P.S.
