What's That, tablature notation

The first is about tablature notation. On a lesson, I found these tab : I found that the "g" is a grace note . What does that mean? What is it for? It's "tied" so you get a larger note value and you often use it when you have long notes that's so long that it doesn't end until the next bar or even later.
