GMC Forum _ Absolute Beginners _ What Inspired You To Start Playing Guitar?

Posted by: Bear Rose Sep 23 2010, 10:17 PM

I'm interested to see what was the reason or inspiration of why everyone here started playing guitar. Here's what started me:

In 7th grade I changed schools, and so I had to make friends with a whole new group of people. Well, the ones that I started hanging out with were all guitar players and all they ever talked about was playing guitar. So, I wanted to fit in as well, so the summer after my 7th grade year I started taking lessons. So, really the reason I started playing guitar was because "all my friends were doing it".

After I started getting into it though, I noticed that I absolutely loved the way certain guitar solos sounded. The solo for "No Rain" by Blind Melon, and the guitar parts in "Yellow Ledbetter" by Pearl Jam, and numerous Slash solos really stirred my emotions. Something about the sound of them just spoke to me and I wanted to play like that. I later discovered that the sound that I loved was the sound of a major scale guitar solo. Most rock, blues, and metal players use the minor and minor pentatonic, but the major scale is so beautiful to me and that is easily what I play the best solos in!

So what was it that caused you to decide to start playing guitar?

I wanted to play guitar by the age of ~14 because I liked the sound of the instrument but I didn't start because I did not want to learn theory and notes. 3 Years later I found out that there are tabs -.-

One guy.... SRV... Yea he pulled me into all his music, I wanted to be him so bad.... When most kids were into rap or metal in the 80's I was listening to blues... Kind of the odd ball.. That's when the madness all started for me..

PFF Well!, in my case i began trying to make music with software mostly and a syntethiser i bought, when i begun recording with it i wanted to put some cool guitars on the tracks but i didnt had a guitar or had played one ever. So I took one old Saehan from my brother and begun practicing with it, after that i became more interested on the instrument and listened more to the guitars of songs i heard

Actually, I was inspired to play by my uncle who was in a rock band when I was just about 8 years old. I saw him jamming to over some backing tracks and it just looked like it was more fun than the law should allow. I asked him if I could borrow one of his guitars and he let me have this modified strat with a dimarzio double coil in it. For an 8 year old, it was an amazing guitar wink.gif He gave me my first lesson by showing me the basic power chord. After that I was off to the races teaching myself.

I always wanted to play guitar ever since I first seen Twisted Sisters "We're Not Gonna Take It" on Mtv when I was four years old. Ever since then I've always had riffs in my head smile.gif

I wanted to start playing guitar when I was 7.I had seen a guitar for the first time and I fell in love with it.I asked my parents but they put me for keyboard instead.Through the years I begged them but my father asked me to get over the dream of playing guitar. When I was 15,i asked them again, but the answer was no.This time I gave them an ultimatum and they were forced to let me learn. biggrin.gif

While I was in 7th grade my friends were into making a band. I was always fascinated with the idea of starting a band and playing live. So I started playing guitar at that time, learning few simple songs and doing some rehearsals. Interesting thing was that at that time I was considered for a bass player spot though I ended up on guitar anyway smile.gif Funny enough bass became my primary instrument later on smile.gif So initial spark was my dream of playing in a band + right friends around me at the right time smile.gif

The year was 1977...I was 16 when Rush's "A Farewell to Kings" came out (seems like yesterday). Xanadu, Cygnus X-1,the title track, all of them really just blew me away with the musicianship and guitar tones. That was also my first concert with UFO(w/Schenker) and Max Webster opening for them...($12.50 for floor seats too)! I was mesmerized with the guitar from then on. I just saw Rush again last night in San Antonio 33 years later(only now tickets were close to $300 for floor seats!) and they still brought the house down. As I looked around at the crowd, a lot of them were my age (49) or older and were there with their kids or grand kids! It's true...even old farts still love to rock! biggrin.gif

This is very funny because I had no clue about music theory until probably 10 years into playing guitar!

It's amazing how much glory he has gathered, when JerryC wrote it. smile.gif

My inspiration was... music. I wanted to play the music I loved (black metal then). Then I heard Marty Friedman (well, I guess I first heard Cacophony), and I immediately fell in love with guitar solos, and stopped listening to black metal. laugh.gif
I never thought about playing guitar for girls or anything like that... I guess that's what happents when you get too focused on technique, haha.

I figured I had advanced as far as I could with my Air Guitar, so one day I took off work early and went bought a Squire Affinity and Peavy Vypyr.

Five months later, and now I have an ESP LTD EC1000 VB, a Schecter 7 string, a Vox VT15, and a Vox AC1.

I plan on exchanging the 7 string for a Schecter C1 Custom, cause that 7 string is just too much guitar for me right now.

But, I'm dumb-founded by how addicted to guitars I have become. They are just so neat looking.

I'm also donating the Squire and Peavy Vypyr amp to a local shelter for abused kids. Getting it was one of the greatest things that has happened to me (it literally changed my lifestyle), and now being able to pass it on is a bonus.

I guess my story is pretty similar to Bear's: I finally asked for lessons because of a cool friend who supposedly knew how to play. However, there's a little more to it:

- I've actually owned a guitar longer than I can remember. I don't know when this busted old classical guitar showed up in my childhood bedroom but it seemed like it was "always there." I'd sit it flat on my lap and play whatever sounded good to me, even though the thing only had three strings on it. I assume this is why, long after, I was always told by musicians that I have "good rhythm"

- I've always loved making things. Building (legos, blocks), drawing, painting, writing, music, programming, whatever. If there was an instrument nearby, I would certainly want to play it even if I was too shy to ask. If it was a guitar, I was less willing since it was a thing to pick up and hold. A piano, on the other hand, seemed less rude to just sit down and play upon.

After relating all of that, I'm going to have to telephone my mother and ask if she remembers where that old guitar came from. I hope she can recall because it's really making me curious now.

I'm going to be a combo breaker here and say.. I started on bass, and it's still my primary instrument! tongue.gif

I guess it was when I was 14 when I bought my first bass because I had a lot of free time due to reasons I wont go into. And I was really into bands like Brain Drill, Cryptopsy, Cynic, Necrophagist, The Faceless and such.. You know, creative, technically skilled and humble musicians that are frowned upon by the majority of listeners and dismissed as "FRETWANKERS!" And really wanted to learn some of these songs.

Of course that was no easy job, so I had to start out playing regular death metal biggrin.gif (Moderate music has never fascinated me.) So anyways, my journey into the guitar started about after a year of bass. Seeing as I didn't want to get stuck in my quest for learning way too much, I decided to try guitar as well. So after about.. Meh It's been about three years now (Two for guitar) I'm finally learning some of these songs. No chicks, no rock'n'roll god dreams.. I simply wanted to play technical death metal.

Very cool! Guitars really are beautiful things! I'm really wanting a PRS guitar, (and yes, partially because they look sooooo good) but I don't know if I can justify the price tag on them.

Also its very awesome that you donated your first guitar and amp to a shelter. That is inspiring. Well done!

I had a cheap cowboy toy guitar when I was young. Never really played it, but it looked cool and I always had it. Our stories seem to be growing more alike! Haha.

It would be very cool to know where that guitar did come from. If you find out, let us know!

I called her just after I posted and she wasn't sure where that guitar could've come from. It took a little describing and explaining but once she remembered it clearly enough she did have a theory. The house I grew up in was kinda large, a 4-story brownstone in downtown Philadelphia. Mom & Dad used to rent rooms to folks on the top two floors and we lived on the ground & second story. She suggests that one of their friends that rented a room up there when I was very very small may have left it behind or gifted it to me/us when I was just a baby.

That's about the best explanation we're likely to get unless she happens to get a postcard or phone call from folks that we haven't seen in almost 40 years. smile.gif

Tenacious D was my inspiration to play guitar biggrin.gif
Their love for guitar and music (not only the movie) overwhelmed me.
And they do ROCK!

I immediately went playing at my friends house (he had a guitar).
After that I bought an acoustic Ibanez in the local music store.
So it was really the 'rocking' part that convinced me. \m/

Well, I really wanted to play the drums when I was around 15 years old and start a band with my friends.
But...3 of my friends allready played the drums, so that wouldn't be most practical.
So I decided to play the guitar, since none of us could at that time and I never regretted that! smile.gif

Haha, thats almost similar to my story, except the smart thing for me to do would have been to start out with the drums, since we had like 5 guys who were guitar players and no drummers. But, 16 years later, I'm happy that I decided to play guitar biggrin.gif

I was playing keyboard for a band back in high school. I really liked it, and I had a great keyboard, a Roland D-50, which was the thing to have at the time.

Our guitar player had an old Cort electric, and man he was good. He made that thing sound better than it was ever meant to.

Anyway, we were playing at a festival, having a blast, but I realized... 'hmm, nobody's looking at me'...

So I bought a guitar and never looked back.

My Mom played a bit of classical guitar, and my Dad makes noise on a piano. I tried out both and found the piano less painful to my fingers. And I still love it (though I can't play...yet). But there is something missing... a piano can't scream! You can have lot of fun with a piano doing the blues, and it's very easy, if you are unassuming. But if hell is breaking loose I need an electric guitar!

I can relate to Rebecca, as I used to play the piano a lot. And having started guitar it is a great way to get the heavy moments across.

GNR concert, Use Your Illusion tour, at the hypodrome in Paris, back in 1991. I was completely blown away by the musical magnitude of the band and especially their lead gitarist. He was not only standing there as a true Guitargod, but he shure played like one too. Slash is the reason why I started playing the six strings. I will honor him and be gratefull to him for that, for the rest of my life.

I was actually thinking about Slash today because someone reminded me that today is his birthday, I believe.

He really is one of the few guitarists that has really transcended musical boundaries. Even if you don't play guitar or aren't a fan of rock music, chances are you've still heard of Slash biggrin.gif

Whoa, last reply was two years ago. Time to unearth this post! It was nice to read about everyone's inspirations in learning smile.gif

My dad inspired me to start playing guitar. He was always playing and singing when my sister and I were younger and I learned a lot of classic folk songs from him. He bought each of us a guitar a few years ago and I wanted to learn to continue the tradition in my family and be able to play the same songs for my kids.

More recently, I've been inspired to learn how to play BETTER because I started writing my own songs and would love to be able to do more with my guitar instrumentals!

I used to play a lot of football when I was 13 years old. Had training 5 days a week and a match in the weekends. Unfortunately I injured my knee, completely ruptured my ACL and had to have surgery, but that had to wait a bit, plus it took them 7 months to even figure out what was wrong. In the meantime I had gotten into Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and so on, so I asked my mom if I could get a guitar, and much to my surprise my parents said yes. I played a lot for some years, and then I put it away for some time as I felt a bit too stressed about other things. I'm finally coming back to feeling like practicing a lot here 11 years after I got my first guitar.

I've been into music since I can remember. I too had put away my guitar playing for many years. Last one was when I was 24 and now I'm almost 40 and have decided that it's something that inspires me and I really enjoy it. It's one of those things, where I can switch off and be in my own little world.

I still play the clarinet in my school band and every now and then, but my main instrument is by far the guitar! smile.gif

Definitely. I used to have a pretty good practice regime down of 2 hours a day of various stuff for some 2 years or so when I was around 15. Then I went on to not play for several years and though I've been down the road before I'm back to square one, and it doesn't feel exactly like riding a bicycle. Now making myself a promise to practice for a year and then save up for a new guitar might inspire me to keep going. laugh.gif

I still play the clarinet in my school band and every now and then, but my main instrument is by far the guitar! smile.gif

smile.gif Clarinet was my first instrument also, but unfortunately I don't play clarinet anymore, because I thought guitar was cooler smile.gif

Me too. I still have two clarinets from when I was a kid. One Albert system and one Boehm system. Then much later in life I picked a guitar up. smile.gif

I used to play violin , but I didn't enjoy that too much , so I learned Flute, then Drums, and from the Drums to the Guitar and Piano, which are the two main Instruments I play, and I must simply admit that picking up the Guitar was one of the best Ideas I've ever had, Best Instrument in the world... and ... it looks and sounds cooler than everything else, of course biggrin.gif

Besides jumping from football to guitar, I actually had played bass at a school concert when I was around 10 or so. But besides that I had little experience with playing music untill I was 13.

It's great to hear about other people's inspirations for playing guitar, as well as to hear about those coming back to it after so many years! smile.gif
