My goal is to be the best guitarist that ever lived. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I have forced myself into a position where I am only working 16 hours a week and barely paying bills so I can study guitar with all of my free time.

My weaknesses are my general lack of theory and scale understanding. I am terrible at creating my own licks and using them in improvs and compositions. I would love to learn how to solo over chord progressions, key changes, etc. This includes learning turnarounds and all that Jazz.

My strongest point is probably my chord abilities. I am still learning how to construct chords, but I can play Major, Minor, Dim, and Aug on any string set. I am only using the triad, but I feel it is the best place to start. I actually have a set of Jazz books written by Jody Fisher. I think you know who he is since you went to LAMA. My next strongest point is my ability to use these chords to write really strange progressions with very intricate timing.

My favourite guitar players:

Mikael Akerfeldt
Jason Becker
Emily Remler
Wes Montgomery
Jon Haughm
Chuck Schuldiner
Ihsahn(Vegard Sverre Tveitan)

I personally play a lot of Black/Death metal. I am trying to learn Jazz so I can make both genres a bit more interesting. I personally think that the subtle use of Jazz chords can either make a song sound more folk/emotional, or a lot heavier and demented.

There is nothing ridicules about wanting to be the best!
It is a good goal and I am 100% with you!
Since you mentioned that you would like to learn how to play over changes and have a problem understanding scales
We will start working on it!
Here is the track
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/ii-v-i-jam

If we will analyze A major pentatonic we will get this
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
I will have a main chord tone and secondary as well

Another thing I want you to do is analyze this chord progression using my technique

A mi7 - D7 - Gmaj7
Find the pentatonics that will create chord tones sound!
I know it might sound confusing but this technique will change the way you are thinking as soon as you will get it!
Let me know if you have any questions!

I will start this right after Todd's Torture Chamber tomorrow!

Thanks, Alex!

I will have to play over the progression quite a bit for it to start making sense. My biggest problem is that I cannot really think of ways to connect the scales. Do you have some licks or tips for me to create my own licks?

Below, I am going to try and use your technique to analyze the chord progression that you gave me as homework:

Over Ami7 chord:
A Minor Pentatonic, D Minor Pentatonic,

Over D7 Chord:
D Major Pentatonic, C Major Pentatonic,

Over GMaj7 Chord:
G Major Pentatonic,

I am about to fall asleep, haha. I will update this Late tonight or early tomorrow since I am a night owl. laugh.gif

If any of these are incorrect so far, please let me know.

Thanks, Alex!

I know it's not easy but I know you can do it!!!
Good job on analyzing chords and making pentatonic choices!
A few suggestions!
b]Over Ami7 chord:[/b]
I would not suggest D minor pentatonic because after you will have a D7 chord so you need to have F# in it
My choice will be A minor, B minor pentatonics

Over D7 Chord:
You have made a good choice I would probably do the same!

Over GMaj7 Chord:
I would use combination in between D major and G major

How to create your own licks!

It is pretty easy and you can be as creative as you want!

We have Emi7 - A7 - D maj7 chord progression for the backing track
Say I chose:

B minor and E minor pentatonic over E mi7
B minor and A minor pentatonic over A7
E minor A major pentatonic over D maj7
Now all you have to do is combine those three and create some licks!
Here is an example combing B minor and E minor pentatonics:
E |-----------------------------------------7----------|
B |-----------------------------------10-------8-------|
G |-----------------7-----------------------------9----|
D |-----------------------9-----7----------------------|
A |-----------7--8-------------------------------------|

For the Ami7 chord, I noticed that you chose the B minor Pentatonic. May I ask why? I might have formulated my scales incorrectly, but I did not notice a III or VII chord tone in that particular minor Pentatonic.

Thanks!

There is no Ami7 chord it's A7
A minor pentatonic ove A7 chord will give me sound of chord tones plus I will have minor third or #9 (C natural)
B minor pentatonic will give me root and V which are the chord tones as well they are not the main one but still chord tones plus I will have 9 what I was thinking is about my next chord
I have Dmaj7
D-F#-A-C#
So if I am gonna keep playing Bmi pentatonic over both A7 and Dmaj7
I will get I-III-V of Dmaj 7
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

That's why I chose it
I hope that make sence if not let me know and I will explain it in more details!

It does, but there was an Ami7 in the chords you wanted me to analyse. I noticed that you chose a B minor Pentatonic and I thought that was strange.

Well in this case when you are analyzing this chord progression
Ami7
A-C-E-G
D7
D-F#-A-C
Gmaj7
G-B-D-F#

Now let's look at B minor pentatonic:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

In A minor 7 we have
A and E
In D7 we have
D-F#-A
In G major 7 we have
B-D-F#

That's why I made this choice because if you will stay in Bmi through the whole progression you will get almost all the chord tones
When I am looking at a chord progression I am analyzing all the chords and trying to see what will come next that's why B minor pentatonic was one of my choices!
I hope that helps

That is definitely the answer I was looking for! I will work on improvising both progressions this week, and then I will get back to this thread.

Thanks, Alex!

Perfect! I am glad I could help!
I know sometimes it might be a little confusing at first but very soon you will understand this conception and it will change the way you think when improvising!!!
Let me know if I can help with anything else!
Looking forward to hear your recording!!!

I am still working on jamming over the rhythm track. I don't feel comfortable enough to move on. I understand the theory, I just cannot seem to apply it to my playing. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks Alex,

-Nihil

PS. I could be over thinking the situation. Most of my academic and musical hindrances stem from trying to think too hard.

I would suggest creating licks combining two or three pentatonics even if it's a short phrase! And don't over think just make sure you understand what you are doing! More you do it better it will get!
I gave you a lot of material don't try to swallow it all right away one step at a time!
Try combining Bmi and E mi pentatonics to start!
Those are positions I want you to use:
For Bmi
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
For Emi
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

You can play those through out the whole backing track!
Try it out and let me know how it goes!
After you will get comfortable we will add more but for now do only those!

Here I thought I would be the only person in the LA area on GMC this early in the day. I will give this a try right after I finish listening to the rerelease of Human by Death.

I am doing well, thank you! I have a solo completed, I just haven't had the time to record it. I have been in the studio rehearsing with a new band I am most likely going to be working with as well. I should have time to record my take some time tomorrow after I get home.

Very nice take!
And cool guitar! Is it Ibanez? smile.gif
I like your ideas very melodic and creative! You timing was a little bit off and you ran out of phrases after a few times through! Those are not hard things to fix!
Here is a very good exercise to help you with timing and boos up your technique!
The trick is to practice it very very slow using a click! It will take time but you will be impressed with results!

Thanks! My timing is not the best. Thank you for working with me on this one! I have Guitar Pro 6, so you do not have to go through the process of typing everything out here on the forum if you do not want to, since i can download all of it.

I love this exercise! The melodies are awesome! I have a lot more free time so I will work on this exercise and post my take this week.

Yes, the guitar is an Ibanez AFS75T. I bought it when I was going to college in Alaska.

I am glad you like the exercise! Here is the trick! When you are practicing it set the metronome at a very slow tempo (90 BPM) and play one note per click! You will see a very huge progress in just a few weeks!

It's sounds like your timing is very good, but it's hard to tell because I can't hear the click! Good job tho! I would suggest you to start doing this exercise when you are warming up! Just do it daily and you will be impressed with results!
I will post a new assignment for you in a few hours! smile.gif

Thanks! When I am feeling better(I caught the flu thanks to my father), I will be sure to post this again with the metronome in the background! This exercise really helped me with my timing.

Here is a new exercise! It's a very good one for you left hand! Make sure to practice it at a slow tempo using a metronome! If you feel any pain stop immediately and let me know!
Right hand shouldn't be involved so left hand legato technique only! Here is the tab!

I do in fact, have a question.

How should I approach in Bar 3? My middle and ring finger cannot make the stretch from the 3rd to 5th fret. For now, I am tapping the 7th fret with my picking-hand, and then resuming the lick with my fretting-hand pinky. Can you let me know what you would advise?

Thanks!

Brandon

Thanks,

I can suggest to loop this part and play it at a very slow tempo! Some parts might take time and the best way to master those is to play at a very slow tempo!

I am practicing at 30 BPM. My problem is that I don't have the physical capability to reach. Is there an exercise or something I can try that will make my fingers stretch further?

Thanks!

Good job!!!!
The only thing is you are doing it way too fast! Slower you do this exercise better results you will get! I would suggest to go down to 80 BPM and really play it slow so every note is there and you have a full control!

You are doing very well! Don't take me wrong I am suggesting to do it slow because you will get better results! You will see a huge difference after one week practicing it at 80 BPM!
This is a mechanical exercise and I would like you to add it to your warming up routine!

It is very hard, hahaha. I hate admitting it, but it is good that I am struggling. Up until this exercise, the only thing I have actually had trouble with was speed and timing. It is nice to know that something else out there is a challenge.

This definitely took longer than it should have. I was really sick and had to take some time away from the instrument. Here is my take of the stretching lesson. I had some trouble with it, so I slowed it down quite a bit(There are still errors). I have added it to my daily warm-up routine so that I can become much better at it. Here is my current take:

Yup! Sorry about not responding sooner, but I left my computer at my friend's house last week and rather than going and getting it sooner, I thought it might be fun to practice the old-fashioned way with just some sheet music and metronome. That small change really made me learn a lot this past week!

I have been working with Major and minor 7th chords more than anything. I am just trying to memorise where all the Major 7th chord voicings are right now. Then I will memorise all the minor 7th chord voicings.

I was working on a really cool Jazz standard named Always by Irving Berlin. Do you know of it?

I have been working with Major and minor 7th chords more than anything. I am just trying to memorise where all the Major 7th chord voicings are right now. Then I will memorise all the minor 7th chord voicings.

I was working on a really cool Jazz standard named Always by Irving Berlin. Do you know of it?

Of course I do! If you want I can create a backing track and we can start jamming over it and I will be giving you assignments based on it! Let me know!

That would be awesome! I was thinking of soloing over the song using Aeolian, but I am having trouble discovering passing tones that I think would sound good.

Can you please right me a chord progression? We might have different versions and I would like to see the one you are working on!

Absolutely. I got it from 'The Real Book' Sixth Edition. I will attach a Guitar Pro file with the chord progression with the voicings I have chosen to use for this song. The melodies will also be included. Feel free to distribute the GP file if you like it. I can always convert the file into GP5 or less as well if that is necessary.

Thanks!

Hi! I am very sorry but unfortunately I won't be able to create the backing track! I am upgrading my studio and will have to wait for a week to get new equipment in!
So in a week it will be done!
In a meantime I will give you a choice!
We can start getting into improvisation using backing track I have
or I can give you another exercise that will help you develop alternative picking!
Let me know! smile.gif

Can I ask what you think I should work on most? I know that the past videos I have posted may not illustrate all of my abilities, but I would like to know what you think I should do.

I think we can combine both and do exercises as a warm up routine every day and do improvisation as well!
What would you say? Also is there a style you are interested the most? Since you mention always I am assuming it's jazz and fusion? Let me know!

That sounds perfect!

So here is what I came up with!
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/libach-jazz
The chord are:
Dmi7 - G7 - Emi7 - Ami7 - Dmi7 - G7 - Cmaj7 - Ami7 - Dmi7 - G7 - Cmaj7 - E7 - Fmaj7 - G7 - Emi7 - Ami7 - Dmi7 - G7 - C7 - Fmaj7 - B7 - Bb7 - A7 - Dmi7 - G7 - Emi7 - Ami7 - Dmi7 - D#diminished - Emi7 - A7 - Dmi7 - Emi7 - Fmaj7 - Cmaj7 - Emi7 - A7

This track is not as hard as it might seem smile.gif
Let's start by analyzing the first part
Dmi7 - G7 - Emi7 - Ami7 - Dmi7 - G7 - Cmaj7 - Ami7 - Dmi7 - G7 - Cmaj7
Over this changes you can play D Dorian, Aminor pentatonic, Dminor pentatonic, E minor pentatonic
Over E7 you can play E minor pentatonic or E mixolydian
I would like you to go ahead and analyze the rest of it!
Try it out and let me know if you have any questions or need help!

May I ask what Key it is in?

May I ask what Key it is in?

It is in D minor
So D dorian will work perfect for the first section!
This track doesn't have that many changes and those are easy and fun to play over! Let me know if you have any questions or need help!

I stopped studying for a bit because I damaged my hands from attempting to tremolo Pick at too high a speed for way too long. I have spent the last 7 weeks or so recovering and getting rid of all my tension problems. If you can give me another week or so, I should be ready to stawrt my mentoring thread again.

Oh wow! I am sorry to hear that! I am glad you are doing better! Take your time and recover!
Let me know when you are ready and we will get right back into the mentoring! smile.gif
