Welcome to CHALLENGE BEN

Each week I shall upload a short lick and you have to record a version of it. Any tempo, freetime.. nice n easy ! Anybody is free to have a go at this but the licks will be more intermediate/advanced territory as I'll be playing things that I would use myself. So, you'll be getting real 100% Ben licks. If that sounds like your thing, then dive in !

Now, this is gonna be old school. Anyobdy who remembers learning from guitar mags will be comfortable with this. You'll have audio - fast and slow, visual tab and a GPro file. That's it. This way you'll work out the best finger patterns for yourself and if you happen to slightly modify the lick then great !! Individuality is a good thing. If you can't see me playing it then it forces you to think about the best way of achieving the lick.

So, without further delay.. let's welcome the 1st lick !

It starts with a short alternate picked sequence. When we hit the top E string I use upstrokes and choke off the notes afterwards to make them stand out. For the very last bend, I let it move up to a whole tone and a half and then up again so it becomes a major 3rd. A popular blues trick.

There's no time limit for this. New licks will be uploaded weekly and you're welcome to drop by and throw down whenever you like.

An audio take (mp3 ideal, wav also ok) is totally fine but you're welcome to do video if you want !

Thanks Ben for a wonderful lick. It's challenging for me indeed.
Btw, isn't it easier to play this part part up-down-up? huh.gif

So I'm more of a jazz and classic rock guy but I'm getting interested in modern metal.
This lick is really cool but I have a problem. My guitars only go to high C# - 21 frets (mostly all Fenders).
I also don't have anything that gives me nearly as much gain as a lot of these licks require to sound authentic.
But I really like this lick so ...

Attached File  DR000049.mp3 ( 275.16K ) Number of downloads: 192

I had to use harmonics both natural and false for the end of the lick.
I'm using a Fender Jazzmaster with really low output pickups. Even though I maxed out the gain on a pedal it's still relatively low.
I also played it in two octaves and really dig it over an F chord (F∆7#11).

Heeeey nice one !! cool.gif

I like the way you tackled the first part with legato. Ironically, I'm more of a legato man myself too.

Love the use of natural harmonic too !!

Oh man, what a tone - sounds sweet as honey !

I like the extra notes you added, more of a harmonic minor vibe - excellent ! cool.gif

Thanks guys smile.gif I recorded this late last night and listening to it this morning at a slower speed its obvious I jacked up the lick at the little mini barre string shift with the middle finger dry.gif , I think I can clean it up tho, probably should have warmed up a bit before jumping on it. Thanks for the lick Ben! And glad you guys like the tone and extra note smile.gif

If you mean that picking lick near the beginning, I use my index finger to fret the 10th fret on the B string. I just take my finger off the G string and play the B with it and then lift it back again. smile.gif

I'm a bit late on this one, but thought to give it try as well.
Needed to transpose this on step down because of missing frets smile.gif

Here is my take. My biggest enemy: unwanted string noise is doing well on this biggrin.gif Maybe due to the high level of reverb, i don't know..

Cool take ! Sounds good to me, nice tone and everything.

Only real string noise was the accidental open G during the bending. All else was cool ! cool.gif
