GMC Forum _ Practicing (Muris) _ Lydian Phrasing Beginner

Hey Muris,

This lesson is driving me up the wall lol. I can play it but some parts sound really polished and others sound very messy. I can't do tapping at all. How would you say I build up to the simple tapping in this lesson? Also the run drives me insane and my fingers have trouble doing the stretching even though there isn't much stretching, although I'm gradually getting better at it. Any tips on mastering it? I will try and post an mp3 of my attempt this week. I'm trying to record and I'm happy with parts but not others. I'm gonna stick with this lesson until I can play it perfect smile.gif

Cheers for giving us a great lesson with this one smile.gif

And I really like Andrew's explanations. They are very helpful to an absolute arse like me biggrin.gif

Hi OC,glad you're having a fun with this lesson! smile.gif

About tapping part and stretching,
there is no stretching there indeed, just like you said,
only whole tone distance in the left hand, notes G# and A#.
I can't say what are doing wrong until I see a video. sad.gif
As for the whole run,if you have troubles to play it clean
then do it very slowly first, those are all triplets,pull-offs only.
Play it countless times(tapping pattern only)
until your hands get comfortable,it's just practicing, nothing else.
Looking forward to your take,
let me know if I can help you more. smile.gif

There is no stretching but because of a problem in my technique I struggle to do two whole notes in a row. I get confused with what fingers to use. Which ones do you use for 6-8-10 run? Also do you take fingers off each note when you have played it or keep your finger on the 6? With practicing it lots it is becoming a lot smoother I have to say. I'm getting that run now pretty well. I find the last run of the song very easy smile.gif It's just the tapping I need to practice. I can do it slow but I struggle speeding it up. Also the slower backings don't seem to work for me can you check they work on your machine. The backing loop works smile.gif

I will video it this week to get feedback and hopefully you can spot my technique errors. smile.gif

Cheers

I mean it's just a general thing if you're playing 3 notes going fret 6 to 8 to 10 on the same string. Which fingers do you use to play each note. It's in the first string skipping section.

Ahh right,Bb Lydian part,I use index, middle and pinky, most comfortable option for me.
On the other hand,Mr. Gilbert would use index, ring and pinky,
which is personal preference at the end. smile.gif

Cool. Well I'm going to record me trying it tonight and then try and get a video of me playing it this weekend. Thanks for the help smile.gif I use index, middle and pinky and I think it's easier for me so I will stick with that. Is it cheating to do tapping using pick rather than fingers?

Posted by: Muris Varajic Oct 8 2008, 04:38 PM

Good!

I wouldn't call it cheating cause that isn't an extra complex part
that requires finger for tapping as the must.
But practice with finger as well, won't hurt. smile.gif

Cheers man. I still haven't had time to record. Got a covers gig in 4 weeks and need to learn 25 songs for it biggrin.gif I will try and post this weekend. It's such an awesome lesson. I need to play around with Lydian modes as I really love the sound.

That would be awesome. I will try and sort it out with the technology guy in our band as I know next to nothing about anything lol. A video of the performance would be great. smile.gif
