GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Internet Band

Posted by: AdamB Nov 10 2011, 03:42 PM

Hi,

Is anyone interested in forming an internet band?

So far I have a friend who wants to play drums, and I was hoping to find another guitarist, a bass player and a vocalist.

The idea is that we'd pick a song to play. Then we'd each learn the parts and individually record our parts (both on video and record the audio direct into a DAW) and then I'd put together a kind of video collage of each members video accompanied by all the various parts mixed.

Obviously you'd need a way of recording video and be reasonably competent at recording your performances audio-wise.

I think it'd be quite good fun, and eventually we could try writing our own material together.

I guess style wise first we'd be doing cover songs, probably start off with kinda cheesy classic rock stuff like Free and Chuck berry and that kinda thing and maybe start branching towards some more metally/progressive stuff if it goes well smile.gif

Is there anyone that'd be interested?

-Adam

Lets try one. I would like to try. Which song should we start with? smile.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Nov 10 2011, 06:21 PM

Hi Adam,
I'd be available for both guitar and bass smile.gif

Lets start this. I am excited. smile.gif Lets create!!

I can join too if you want smile.gif

Posted by: AdamB Nov 11 2011, 02:52 PM

Haha, cool.

OK, well as for a song, I wanted to do Free - Fire and Water, but I'm not sure if that's too complicated for the drummer or not. It has a nice solo in the middle that we could do as a kind of question/answer thing or something that would be neat. I'm obviously open to taking suggestions of songs, it should probably be reasonably straight forward to play for us all for a starting point though I guess.

-Adam

Oh and we probably could do with a vocalist, unless we chose an instrumental track or play the vocal melody on guitar or something!

Haha, I think we posted at the same time.

I think Gitarrero could do the bass if he still wants to, and maharzan is doing the other guitar as he got in there first.

Though it might be cool to have 3 guitarists if there's a song we can do that there were enough parts for us each to try. We could do like johnny be goode with an extended solo section where we each take a solo or something, that'd be quite fun. I'm assuming you play guitar?

Posted by: Gitarrero Nov 11 2011, 03:12 PM

Alright, I'm up for the bass part!

Posted by: maharzan Nov 11 2011, 05:09 PM

You know what I was thinking? Lets actually try one song first to see if we can succeed. If that goes well, lets actually start making backing tracks and give them away for free or sell them when we start making more original songs or even covers. We can do things like, track without drums, without guitars, without vocals etc.. would be great if things go well. smile.gif

Is this the song?

Yeah, i play guitar and i'm up for it smile.gif

Posted by: AdamB Nov 11 2011, 10:07 PM

Yep that's teh one, though there's a better version, I couldn't find it on youtube but it's on spotify. It's the live version (1970 Farfield Hall, Croydon).

I've made a skeleton track, with some guide drums/guide rhythm guitar, which I have attached.

I've also got a guide track for johnny b goode if we wanted to do that, I gotta re-record certain bits though as I intended it to be a shred version so it's setup a bit fast at 140bpm. I'll drop the speed and bit and upload it over the weekend.

I'm not sure how we should manage who plays what and when? I guess we can all double up the rhythm part, but the hard part is what to do with the solo? I guess it depends if we want to duplicate an existing solo (in which case we can assinging parts out to share) or if we want to create our own ones?

Is there anyone who wants to attempt the vocals?

-Adam

Cool. I am up for both replicating the older lead or creating your own. smile.gif

Posted by: maharzan Nov 12 2011, 07:03 AM

Is this the one?

The trick would be use create a drum track or just metronome would do, record rhythm/solo/bass and redo the drum if theres a live drummer. Then we can add in vocals.

I guess you have the chords, can you post them? I will figure out the solo.

Posted by: AdamB Nov 12 2011, 09:51 AM

That's not the exact one, but it's very similar, so it'll do!

Yea I figured we'd use that guide track I created and attached to the last post, record each part + video individually in time to that, and then re-record the drums with the live drummer. The bit in the middle with only drums is the guitar solo, there's no rhythm part under it in the original (we could add one in to thicken it up possibly - we'll see how it sounds).

I'll either create a dropbox folder and e-mail you guys a link to it (to upload your raw recorded files both video and audio) or figure out some other way to transfer it.

I'll get the johnny b goode one up hopefully tomorrow.

hey guys! this is a great project! I'll stay tuned! smile.gif

As to the chords for fire and water,

Not entirely sure how he does it, I *think* he's using power chords but with an added octave (i.e. 5th fret low e, 7th fret A string and 7th fret D string to form a 1, 5, 8 power chord). Occasionaly he seems to throw in the odd open chord, but I think it sounds fine doing it with power chords.

Intro;
D5->E5->
G5->Gb5->D5->E5->
G5->A5->D5->E5->
E5->D5->Db5

Verses:
A5->B5
A5->B5
D5->E5
A5->B5
A5->B5
A5->B5
D5->E5
E5->D5->A5

Chorus:
B5->D5->E5->B5
D5->A5->E5->B5
E5->D5->Db5->E major open chord

And I think that's it, it just repeats in the following order I think;

Intro,
Verse,
Verse,
Chorus,
Verse,
Chorus,
Guitar solo (length of verse + chorus)
Verse,
Chorus,
Outro (which is mostly just the drums and vocals, finishing with a B5 chord at the end)

Great. Can you actually send / host both drum/guitar track separately? I would like to record too.

Posted by: quadrium Nov 12 2011, 12:58 PM

Adam can you send the files with dropbox?

Posted by: AdamB Nov 13 2011, 10:30 AM

Yeap I'm creating a dropbox folder with guide drums and guide guitar as seperate tracks, as well as the guide track with them both in place.

If you PM me your e-mail addresses I'll give you all access.

maharzan at gmail. I am learning the solo.. 80% done. smile.gif

Posted by: AdamB Nov 13 2011, 05:49 PM

Just did a test video with my camera/recording with my UX2, you can check it out here;

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=41579

It seems to have gone OK, so in the coming days I'll do a take of the rhythm guitar with video, I'll learn the solo tomorrow as I only know the very first part. Then perhaps what I think we should do is each record a take of the solo with video. Then we'll split them up into qustion'/answer parts (possibley into 3 parts so quadrium can join in), so the first phrase of the solo is played by maharzan, tehn the next one is by me, then the next one by quadrium and so on. We should be able to do that in the editing stage of the video.

Good idea?

Cheers,
-Adam

Alright, Just did the solo. Its a rough take. I will have to practice it a bit more and adjust the tone as well.

I think this tempo is bit slower than the youtube video I was learning from. Whatcha think? I will try another take later today.

Yea it might be, I can always re-do it at a higher tempo if you'd like?

It'd be great. I am working on solo also by the way smile.gif

Posted by: AdamB Nov 15 2011, 05:24 AM

Listened to your take maharzan, sounds good. You captured the style and feel pretty well!

I'll hopefully get a chance to do the faster version tonight for you to have another go!

Posted by: maharzan Nov 15 2011, 07:18 AM

Great.. just increase it a tad bit like 5bpm or 10bpm. smile.gif I will try to get the solo more cleaner. smile.gif

Posted by: AdamB Nov 15 2011, 09:51 PM

Righto, I uploaded a new copy of the drums-only track on dropbox - called guide_drums_faster.mp3.

I havent had chance to re-record the guitar part yet, I will do that tomorrow and hopefully capture my rhythm take on camera!

-Adam

Posted by: maharzan Nov 16 2011, 03:34 AM

Cool.. smile.gif

Posted by: AdamB Nov 17 2011, 11:04 AM

There's a new copy of the rhythm guitar + drums guide track up, this time sped up by 5bpm. Let me know if that feels better to you, I can increase it again if it needs it.

Cheers,
-Adam

Great.. I will try. smile.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Nov 18 2011, 06:10 PM

Nice, I am working on the bass part at the moment, need a new soundcard though since my old one broke. But I should be able to record something on sunday.

Posted by: AdamB Nov 21 2011, 11:42 AM

OK Brilliant, the drummer should be doing a take today or tomorrow for us.

Posted by: quadrium Nov 21 2011, 01:12 PM

awesome smile.gif i will have finished recording both rhythm and solo parts in 3-4 days.Have 3 midterms in the following days sad.gif

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Nov 21 2011, 03:25 PM

Awesome idea! smile.gif It will be interesting to see how it will turn out. If I can offer some advices on video or something, I'll be glad to.

Posted by: maharzan Nov 23 2011, 02:44 AM

Adam,

Lets get the drum track first (playing live is different from midi drums you know) so we can do our final takes instead of having to redo again. I can record but as I posted on another thread, I am now a dad to a beautiful girl child so time has been hectic. I want to record my take at once. smile.gif

Thanks,
Chandra

I just had the same thought as you Chandra. Looking forward to the drummer's take! Got the bass part pretty much down.

Very cool project guys wink.gif I"m always up to pitch in on projects/collabs! It sounds like you guys have the instrumentation all worked, out. I'd be happy to help out on Mixing/Mastering though smile.gif

Also, maybe this thread should be over in Collab? I almost missed it!

Ok I couldn't wait. Heres with the lead section. smile.gif

I have placed the lead only wav file in the dropbox in case it works out with all other recordings. If it doesn't, let me know and I will re-record another take.

Cheers!!

OK Great, the drummer did a take but it wasn't amazing, so he's going to do another tonight. He's using a guide track with click+my guide rhythm guitar to record to so it should match up fine, if all goes well!

I listened to your take, it was good! Is there video to accompany it?

Cheers,
-Adam

Posted by: maharzan Nov 25 2011, 12:54 PM

No video yet. My room is complete mess as I just had a baby child so no time to set up video cameras.. I can always do it once everything is finalized and if we require final take. Or even for some dynamic camera movement, we can do different angle video (hand syncing later). smile.gif

Posted by: maharzan Nov 28 2011, 04:27 PM

Any progress? smile.gif

Posted by: AdamB Nov 29 2011, 12:52 PM

Not yet, the drummer has been away for a few days so I'm waiting for him to do his next take, I'll let you know when it's available. I will also try doing a solo take as I've learnt the solo now.

Posted by: maharzan Nov 30 2011, 11:20 AM

Ew, that drums isn't quite right. So, is your friend learning it?

Posted by: AdamB Nov 30 2011, 03:25 PM

Oh he's uploaded a take has he? I haven't heard it yet, I'm at work, I only have dropbox at home. Is it not good then?

He's been playing a couple years now I think, but to be honest I've never played with him, he just offered to do the drums and so I said yea sure, give it a shot, as I don't know any other drummers heh.

I'll have a listen when I get home and see what it's like...

Cheers,
-Adam
