Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Blues: Beyond The Minor Pentatonic by Jacob Light

Learned this when it came out and since it was one of the only things I learned all the way through I thought I'd use it for my first REC post :) I know one lick, one bend and the first slide are all messed up but I plan to work on that. I wanted to get some advice before practicing it a little first.

Wellcome in the REC zone Nick! smile.gif Very good decission. The earlier You start, the faster You become comfortable with posting all Your progress smile.gif

Let me simply point out a short list of things worth considering:

1. We need to see both hands clearly - this really helps to search for any tips for You to be helpful. Try to "uncover" Your right hand if possible (next time) smile.gif
2. Use much less distortion - the trick about most of blues lesson is to be able to learn dynamics and tone control. Lower distortion helps to make thinbgs very clear
3. Your left hand looks very good (overall position) but it leaves a lot of space for unwanted noise. You need to syc both hands not only while playing, but also while You do all the breaks/pauses. Everytime You finish a note, we hear some "scratch of strings" thing. It's worth to secure all the strings. IT might not be that visible on the lower distortion but if You learn this - it will work no matter what kind of tone You use. Try to take a very close look on Jacob's right hand. See how He positions his right hand at those short moments of break between phrases.

Anyway You aproach is still pleasant to listen and there are a few details to get done to pass it smile.gif

I'll leave some for other instructors wink.gif

Hi Nick! Congrats on your first REC take! smile.gif

The video looks good but I think the sound of your video could be really improved if you'd use a multitrack software to record guitar and mix it with the backing. Then you can replace audio from your video and your mix will sound much better. In this video, the direct guitar sound is louder than your amp tone and it makes tricky to hear how you manage tone and dynamics which are two very important elements in this lesson. From what I can hear, you are using a tone with more drive and sustain compared with the original lesson, and this prevents a bit from getting the dynamics that Jacob gets on this lesson, so I would try with less drive to let the wood of your guitar and your fingers work more.

Your playing is really good on this one, you have a good timing and can play all the licks clear and clean. I think that you could get more from the lesson if you pay attention to vibrato and play along with the instructor to get his way of using the technique which is more consistent than yours by now. Sometimes your vibrato is weak or irregular so please keep on working on it.

You also should pay attention to the groove of some licks, for example the ones at 00:12, that sound a bit "hurried" in your take. The reason can be that you are doing the trill a bit fast. Something similar happens with the lick at 00:17.

So this is a good take just focus on details now: Vibrato, dynamics and timing.

Keep on the hard work!

Hi, you put in a great effort here. It's not bad at all. There's a few areas for improvement, as you expected anyway, but generally you've got a good grasp of timing and hand co-ordination so it's just a question of honing areas like:

Timing
Muting unwanted string noise as Darius pointed out
Vibrato
Bending

Regards vibrato and bending, I did have a very useful article that I wrote but I can't find it but if you watch these 2 videos that I made you'll see how vibrato can be treated the same way as string bending. It will also show you how you can use your other fingers to add strength to the bending process rather than relying on just one finger. If you watch them in the following order you can apply the principles of bending to vibrato smile.gif
