Hello,

I have really re-dedicated to trying to improve playing... I have noticed that if I play some bar or power chords for a while my fret hand gets tired.... mostly in the thumb area... What can I do to build this up safely?? is it just like anything else... practice practice or some special exercises to do?

Thanks
Chaz

When I was beginner I was SOOOOO frustrated with bare chords and my disability to play them clean and powerful.
It was SOOO bad that I even made a promise...like this..
"These chords are DAMN stupid,I don't need them and I'm NEVER gonna play them!!! mad.gif " blink.gif laugh.gif

Of course, not so long after that I realized my statement was poor nonsense. biggrin.gif
It comes with time,no worries, just practice and play. smile.gif

purely down to practice and time mate, remember to give yourself plenty of breaks if your hand is tireing, I know the area of the thumb your talking about, deep in the base (fleshy part), I deliberatly make chords part of my practice routine to keep strength up in this area as in the past I`ve suffered with this too smile.gif

About barre chords don´t overpress. If you don´t have calluses on the side of the index finger it hurts anyway, so only do enougt strengh to intonate the notes.
If you´re thumb hurts you´re doing wrong, is not the grip of the hand that gives you the most of the streng, it is the weight of the arm that also helps in that job.
Also don´t make barre over unused strings.
Excercise 1 make a A chord in position V only the first 3 strings. The notes are A E and C#. for only A and E use barre with 1 and play C# with 2.
Excercise 2 to this chord add the bass the A on 6 string now the 1 finger is kinda curve couse isn´t pressing the 5th and 4th string.
Excercise 3 in V position make a full Barre but press only the 1rst string, play all the string 1 by one the first must sound well an the others muted, do this steps with the other strings.
1 tip for half barres: the fist knucle must be in front of the line of the fingerboard if they dont when your finger try to press they press some of the side of the neck and it hurts a lot. For this must bring your elbow to the front dont´bend the wrist.
2 tip bringing the elbow to the front and bringing your wrist to the roof makes the arm weight happens.

3 tip check some good book for example Scont Tennant´s Pumping Nylon it´s only 11$ and it´s a good book

Good look have fun.

It can help a bit if you are using a thinner gauge strings and a low action guitar. The rest comes with time.
