Hi all, i'm currently trying to improvise over a 12 bar blues with the chord progression of G, C then D but i'm having trouble knowing which scales to use for this. I was wondering if anyone had any advice/techniques?

Thanks a lot

use the scales that correspond to the key.

I would suggest, G minor Blues, C Major Pentatonic and D minor Blues,

someone might have a better suggestion over the C Major Pentatonic, but i think it would sound good.

G minor Pentatonic would sound nice and Bluesy.

Here's an interesting thing you can do. Start off from Gminor pentatonic. Then after a while add one note (C#) to your impro, and then after a while when you feel comfortable with thsoe positions add two more notes ( E and A).

The scales you used in the were Gminor pentatonic, Gminor blues, and Gdorian, all very suitable for blues.

This is not a general rule, just a guideline to develop imrpovisation, you can make other combinations afterwards. The most logical step is to go on Gmajor after those. In G major, you have both Cmajor type and Dmajor type scales (C lydian and D mixolydian). In the blues it is important to mix major and minor scales properly - that is one very important thing in the blues.

There are also lot of ways to play the blues, but know that it doesn't take many notes to play it. Trues masters mix these scales using just a few notes at a time using heavy syncopation and that is really what it's all about.
