Hey all at GMC,
I am not sure if this thread already exists, but if not I'm going to start it. My questions are: 1. How tall are you? (feet & inches or metres & centimetres, or convert and post both if you can just for the sake of making it easier for everyone to understand) 2. How big are your hands, from the line on the underside of your wrist to the tip of your middle finger? Also, any discussion on the pros and cons of big hands and long fingers in regards to guitar technique and what level of stretches etc you can physically do is also welcomed. If anyone has any information of the hand size of famous guitarists this might also be interesting to look at. Doesn't have to be measurements, maybe you've shaken the hand of a famous guitarist or something. To get started: My Height: 72.5 inches/Just over 6ft 184cm/1.84m My hand Size: 19.5cm/7.7 inches So there you go. I don't consider my hands to be very big, but I can make some big stretches with what I've got and without pain. For example, all of John Petrucci's "Rock Discipline" stretches and some crazy diminished stretches that Rusty Cooley shows in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRWnUApF52U&mode=user&search=). 1 m 85 cm here. 6'1''
18.5 cm, dunno about how many inches that is. but length and hands don't make much diffrence when playing guitar. more important is how well your hand muscles are trained and how well your fingers are adapted to playing guitar. |

188cm tall, 19.6cm hand
But once you get certain level of technique it doesn't matter that much. Take Yngwie per example, kind a small hands and pretty fat fingers nowdays but he plays best shred in his life. -------------------- Youtube

Height: 6'1'' / 185.4 cm Hand: 18.9 cm (reall short pinky tho I just meassured from the line under the palm to the tip of my pinky and that only adds up to 16 cm. Of course where your fingers are attached is slightly curved, so the difference between pinky and middle is only about 2 cm from bottom of the finger to the tip, where as the difference from the bottom of the palm to the tip is 4 cm. |

Interesting topic.
height 5'11 I think that's around 180cm, hand is slightly under 8' I think that's about 20cm. My fingers are a bit chub I remember first touching the guitar when I was younger and it was hard to stretch my fingers between 3 & 4 frets. Keeping the first finger on the 1st fret I can comfortably stretch to the 7th, uncomfortablly 8th , & not even close to the 9th. Most of the time my thumb hangs over the neck for the bass notes of chords and I find my hand size fits well on the neck of my guitar. I wish my finger were just a bit thiner though This post has been edited by Henry Dietzel: Aug 7 2008, 06:15 PM -------------------- |
