Here's a good article on Harmonics...
Harmonics In this context, harmonics are not necessarily related to the key or related directly to "harmony" theory, but instead are related the physics of the string as it vibrates. There's a lot of cool math going on with regard to the relationship between musical notes and the physics of an instrument. The article above explains a lot of this in a cool way. Musically, harmonics can be thought of as octaves. The 2nd harmonic is an octave above the root note. The 3rd is two octaves above root etc. This post has been edited by JamesT: Dec 9 2009, 10:23 PM -------------------- |

Harmonic is the frequency that occurs in the higher frequencies than basic (fundamental) frequency. They can be calculated via mathematical formulas. They are defined loosy as components of the tone we hear when we play the instrument. This said, they are the part of the sound we hear, but not something we can normally produce on it's own. It is possible to produce many harmonics on an instrument, depending of the instrument ofc. On the guitar we can produce natural or artificial harmonics using specific techniques. As said in previous posts, these are usually higher octave values of the fundamental note (note on the fret we are producing harmonic on)
