It looks good already. This is sure to improve anyone's technique. I will see you tomorrow, man! Thanks ahead of time for the lesson!

No peeking!:) Just kidding. I work the lesson plan out almost in real time Friday evening based on my notes made during the week in terms of what, Id to cover. There is a bit of tweaking always as coming up with licks in my head and playing them are different. This week should be quite a challenge and loads of fun!

In this lesson we are going to complete our Trilogy of Intense Alternate / Economic Picking work that we started in Lesson 88. Each of these has used the same backing so all of the licks will work with that backing. And all these licks are in the key of A Minor. So you can use all of them to solo in A Minor agaisnt just about any A Minor Backing.

Let's warm up and get going!

FINGER YOGA!
Lets do our usual Finger Yoga stretches. Here is a link to the video for references.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POvVMNdc6Tg

Here is a custom OVERLOUD TH1 TRIODE Patch for you guys for today.

Attached File  Lesson94TH1.xml.zip ( 13.89K ) Number of downloads: 176

We are going to need our stretch and our speed today. Let's start with the stretch. We are going to dive back in to our "Tripeggios!". Here we go.

WARMING UP TO PREP FOR FINGER TORTURE

(The Warmup is actually also Part I ) Let's try our new Tripeggio pattern for today. It's our same Tripeggio shape form the other two in this series but we are adding a twist. Once we get the pattern down, we are going to play it twice and march it down the neck and try it on other strings. It will get really, really, really hard the further down the neck we go. Once we reach the firs fret, if you can pull this off, congratulations, you are there smile.gif

Attached File  94_Warmup.gp5 ( 1.51K ) Number of downloads: 146

Attached Image

Let's work on a fairly complext descending pattern. It's in A Minor per usual.

EXTENDED "CRAZY" TRIPEGGIOS

Now that we have some muscle memory built up, we are going to use the modified tripeggio in key, as a solo lick with our backing track. First, let's look at the shape.

Attached File  94_2.gp5 ( 1.8K ) Number of downloads: 147

Attached Image

This can be played as a sort of sweep and hammer/pull off, or it can be picked. Let's try it both ways. So let's loop this, march it up the neck, and try it on other strings. This will work the living daylights out of your fingers and maximize your stretch. It will pay off by making your pinky much stronger and faster.

Once we get it up to speed, let's play it with our backing! You should be very familiar with our backing at this point.

Attached File  TripeggioSeries_BackingTrack.mp3 ( 726.45K ) Number of downloads: 146

DOWN BY FOURS

Let's give our fingers a tiny break and focus on a descending pattern called "Fours" or going down four notes, then back to what would have been the next note in a give scale. We are going to continue to use a Minor. Be sure to Palm Mute this and alternate pick it.

Let's double pick it if possible. And try it in different octaves.

Attached File  94_3.gp5 ( 2.16K ) Number of downloads: 139

Attached Image

HOMEWORK

Try to give this a shot and we will break it down in a future lesson.

Attached File  94_4.gp5 ( 1.86K ) Number of downloads: 131

Attached Image

This concludes our TRIPEGGIO TRILOGY! If you made it this far, you RAWK!

Todd

In this lesson we are going to focus on our speed, our stretch, our legato and our picking. Quite a bit of ground to cover, but we can do it smile.gif

Let's warm up and get going!

FINGER YOGA!
Lets do our usual Finger Yoga stretches. Here is a link to the video for references.

NEW GUITAR RIG 4 PRESET (Lesson 95 Patch)

*SUPER HIGH GAIN PATCH. Notice the settings on the compressor. This patch assumes you are not using any hardware preamp or anything. It's super sick gain can be too much with an external preamp.

This patch is from this weekends upcoming lesson 95. All of the lessons can be found in the wiki, thank goodness for Fran!

PLAYING CRAZY RYTHM PARTS

Let's work on playing a rather complex guitar rythm and use it work on various techniques. Here is the backing.

Attached File  95_Backing.mp3 ( 4.9MB ) Number of downloads: 155

Let's take a look at the tablature. You will need to make a big stretch with your pinky and bar with your first finger. The rythm is a bit wonky but you can get used to it quickly. The bit has an off time Death Jazz feel to it. Check out the tablature, and once you get the pattern, just move it up to frets and play the same thing and thats part B.

*Palm Mute this

Attached File  PowerMetalToddWithBacking.mp3 ( 1.06MB ) Number of downloads: 153

Let's try one of these licks. It's not a hard one, but it's played a bit brisk. Let's see if we can do it at speed once we work up to it.

Thanks for coming out to the lesson on Sat guys! It was blast as usual. It's always great to have a full house for a Saturday Metal Meltdown! Hopefully nobody has permanent injury from the finger torture. Remember to try to cool down / stretch a bit after each marathon shred fest.

Let's get our fingers up to snuff a bit before we get in to this. We have been working quite a bit on our stretch of late, so hopefully this series will be quite easy. If not easy, hopefully it will be at least possible. let's start easy.

But first, here are a couple of Spiff patch/presets. One for OVERLOUD TH1 and one for GUITAR RIG 5. Either one has more than enough gain for today smile.gif

CUSTOM PATCHES/TONES

BACK TO THE PINKY! GETTING LOST IN THE LAND OF LEGATO

Starting of Small
Attached File  96warmup.gp5 ( 1.5K ) Number of downloads: 118

Very simple shape. Let's play it twice, move it down one fret and play twice again. At first, let's only strike the open string and hammer on the rest. Then let's do it Alternate Pick style to see the difference.

Once we've got it, move it all the way down to the first fret for the first finger and then switch down one string and repeat. This functions as an endurance workout and a warmup.

HARDER AND FASTER!

Adding a bit of a stretch, let's do the same thing as before. But with some work now for our stretch. Let's play it twice, move it down one fret and play twice again. At first, let's only strike the open string and hammer on the rest. Then let's do it Alternate Pick style to see the difference.

Attached File  96a.gp5 ( 1.49K ) Number of downloads: 136

Attached Image

TRIPLE DOWN!

Let's add a third note in to prep for our later work today. Let's play it twice, move it down one fret and play twice again. At first, let's only strike the open string and hammer on the rest. Then let's do it Alternate Pick style to see the difference.

Attached File  96b.gp5 ( 1.51K ) Number of downloads: 139

Attached Image

A MINOR RETURNS

As part of our Backing is in A MINOR and we have been working on hammer ons, let's hammer on A minor. We have done lots of single string work in the past, but typicaly moving a single shape as we did earlier. We are now going to shift the shape at each position so your fingers will need to be precise.

At first, let's just strike once per group of 4 notes. Then let's try to alternate pick it. Then double pick of course smile.gif

TAPPING/HAMMERING WITH BOTH HANDS AND 4 NOTE GROUPS (4 Finger Tapping)

This is the part where we put it all together. We've done four finger tapping in the past and it was a bit of a struggle for some, so I thought we could use a bit more practice. Not to mention, we have been doing picking workouts for the past month so I thought a bit of tapping would be a good change of pace smile.gif

It's a big LEGATO/TAPPING lesson so not much double picking in this one. But next week, back to Alternate/Economic/Double/triple/quad picking wink.gif

Let's use our triad shape we've been working on and play it four times each position and run it all the way down the neck and back up if possible. Well, let's build to that, smile.gif

Attached File  97w.gp5 ( 1.48K ) Number of downloads: 127

RIGHT HAND LEFT HAND SYNCH (Looping Patterns)

Let's loop this shape for a bit then play it down the neck to get used to it. We are going to play it against a backing to see how a looped lick can add texture to a rythm track.

Attached File  97a.gp5 ( 1.51K ) Number of downloads: 147

Attached Image

Let's dip in to that backing track that causes some folks so much trouble a bit back and use it as our backing. Our Lesson 95 Crazy Picking Backing Track.

Attached File  TripeggioSeries_BackingTrack.mp3 ( 726.45K ) Number of downloads: 127

Our Looped shape will work well with this backing. In the key of A. This shape makes a good loop to work on our picking an right hand left hand synchronization. It can be played slow and double picked or played fast and single picked and still sound right with the backing.

HERE"S WHERE IT GETS TRICKY

We are going to leverage all the spiff PINKY POWER you guys have worked up over this series and introduce a "Pinky Slide" in to our shape. You will use the pinky to slide up to and back from the high note on the 13th fret.
Attached File  97bfix.gp5 ( 1.5K ) Number of downloads: 121

Attached Image

Now let's do a slightly different version of this that we will chain to together with the first one to make a combo pinky slide lick!

Attached Image
Attached File  97cfix.gp5 ( 1.51K ) Number of downloads: 139

For our Combo Pinky Slide lick, play Part B, then C, then move C down a whole step, back up a whole step, the back to Shape B. So 1, 2, 3, 2, 1, is the pattern.

This should sound cool against our backing.

Now let's drop the slide and use your pinky and ring finger to fret the last two notes in each shape. This gives an entirely different feel to the lick.

Thanks for coming out to the chat guys smile.gif You guys always make it a blast!

That's a KILLER Wah! You are gonna dig that. Post some recordings!

This Saturday in the VIDEO CHAT LESSON we are going to work a bit on picking really fast while looking like your playing slow. This is a topic that keeps coming up in the forums so I"m going to focus on it a bit. Here's a demo video about it.

Here is a link to my youtube vid with solo take. These are the licks we are going to try to work on today.

WARMING UP THE FINGERS

Let's do a bit of warmup work before we start in. It's good practice to warm up your fingers and your picking hand with a decent bit of work at the start of any practice. Building endurance each time you play really helps.

Attached File  98w.gp5 ( 1.49K ) Number of downloads: 110

Attached Image

This is a very simple shape. Let's run this up and down the neck all the way back to fret number 1. First, let's do it with one pick sroke per string and then let's alternate pick. We are going to use this shape today in our licks.

The first lick is one we have discussed at length so it should be pretty easy. This is the

LICK #1 - A MINOR INVERSION (QUICK REVIEW OF PREVIOUS MATERIAL)

You guys should know this lick back and forth by now. So let's single and double pick this.

Attached Image

LICK #2 - Pentatonic Fun

This lick has few notes but lots of picking. Play it palm muted.

Attached File  98_2.gp5 ( 1.63K ) Number of downloads: 130

Attached Image

LICK #3 - Single String Work

We have done lots of this so it should be pretty easy to pick this up. Let's play this on a few different strings to work on our reach and let's double pick it.

Attached File  98_3.gp5 ( 1.79K ) Number of downloads: 129

Attached Image

LICK #4 - Running Up The Neck

A Minor run up the neck. Not very fast, just moving a lot. Palm mute if possible. Let's also double pick this once we get it down.

VIDEO CHAT LESSON 99 - RACER X STYLE PART I

Let's warm up and get going!

FINGER YOGA!
Let’s do our usual Finger Yoga stretches. Here is a link to the video for references.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POvVMNdc6Tg

As a sort of warm up to our LESSON 100 fun, we are going to get our fingers going with some RACER X style chops. These chops are not difficult when broken apart. I previously tossed a very long version of this lick in to a Video Chat Lesson to see if it would work as a single bit but it's a tad long for that. Let's break this down and work up some speed and endurance in the process. Once we build up some speed, LESSON 100 won't seem that hard at all smile.gif

*SECRET SAUCE! SSSSHHH! (This patch uses some tricks with parallel compression to bring out your picking)
It's for OVERLOUD TH2. If you don't have this, go grab the demo, so you can import this patch for this lesson.

Attached File  99OVERLOUD_Th2_SecretSauce4Shred.xml.zip ( 12.27K ) Number of downloads: 131

Here is a Th1 Patch as well.
Attached File  99TH1Final.xml.zip ( 5.25K ) Number of downloads: 129

Now then,

THE WARMUP THAT"S REALLY IT"S OWN ENTIRE LESSON

We are going to be using some hopefully familiar shapes. Let's take a basic one and work out hands/stamina a bit.

We are going to go full circle here back to the very start of our work together. You should know this pattern by heart. If not, now is a good time to learn. Let's play this on several strings and using doubles, thumbless etc. This one pattern contains everything your fingers need to know to "Shred", this one pattern can take you to the next level in terms of precision/speed.

Attached File  99_Warmup.gp5 ( 1.61K ) Number of downloads: 127

Attached Image

BIG SCARY CHOPS BREAK DOWN IN TO EASY BITS

As you know, the biggest, most hairy licks/chops you can imagine can be broken down in to little bits and learned a chunk at a time. Let's tackle one and work up some speed/endurance on the way.

PART A

Let's get used to playing this on different strings, using singles and doubles.

Attached Image
Attached File  99_a.gp5 ( 1.57K ) Number of downloads: 129

PART B

Let's get used to playing this as well, on different strings, using singles and doubles.

Attached File  99_b.gp5 ( 1.57K ) Number of downloads: 134

Attached Image

PART C

Let's get used to playing this also, on different strings, using singles and doubles.

Attached File  99_c.gp5 ( 1.57K ) Number of downloads: 127

Attached Image

PART D

Let's get used to playing this as an addition, on different strings, using singles and doubles.

Attached File  99_d.gp5 ( 1.57K ) Number of downloads: 124

Attached Image

PART E

Now that we have some muscle memory with all these. Let's tie them all together in to one lick. This lick can be played slow or fast but sounds best fast smile.gif

Attached File  99_E.gp5 ( 2.03K ) Number of downloads: 109

Attached Image

Here is a backing (from our Tripeggio work) that works well with this lick.

Attached File  99_BackingTrack.mp3 ( 726.45K ) Number of downloads: 119

Here is a video Preview of the lick played at Speed.

PREPARE FOR DEATH!

Let us prepare for burning death! Well, let's get our fingers going anyway smile.gif

Let's take a familiar shape and play it striking only the first note on each string. Then every note. Then double picked. Of course, let's march this all the way up the neck to the 12th fret.

Attached File  100w.gp5 ( 1.48K ) Number of downloads: 108

Let's have a look at LICK #1. Watch the video and notice where it fits in. Here is the tablature. Each position is played four times.

TRIPLE/DOUBLE DEATH

This next lick blends our fav "Double and Triple" styles of picking in the same lick. Some notes are triple picked (three strokes per note) and some are double picked (two strokes per note).

PAUL GILBERT DEATH

This lick is one we worked on last week in preparation for today. Hopefully, it's all smooth sailing from here!

TAPPING DEATH

Let's add some tapping/hammering!

SCALE INVERSION DEATH

Let's use one of our fav licks. The Scale Inversion! As a bonus, let's triple pick it! Let's start with SINGLE PICKING then, double, then let's melt our hand off with TRIPLE!
