Legato Request Options

I have posted a request elsewhere on the discussion board but will try you directly because I think this request might fit your style.

I would like to work on legato, the kind of smooth violin like legato played by holdsworth, allen hines, or marshall harison. I cannot find any lesson on GMC, though there are a few brief moments when on 'creative arppegio phtasing' when you seem to be going there.

This Marshall Harison link is an example- but it is too fast for me to appreciate. I would like to learn what a chopin-esque pedal tone with only hammer-ons, no pull-offs really is.

That's right, I use some modern legato technique in the "creative arppegio phrasing" lesson : it's basically legato + hybrid picking to get a more fluid phrasing/lines. So it's not completly legato as there's still some attacks with the picking hand. That's the same approach as A. Hinds, B. Garsed...

But I'm not sure about what the "chopin-esque pedal tone" really is, with only hammer-ons and no pull-offs... so it's hard for me to talk about this technique as I don't use it.

The Holdsworth's technique is, most of the time, no attack with the right hand in playin' ascending/descending lines.

I guess I will put MHarrison aside for the time being. I am following a few online lessons from Garsed and I see how light touch and hybrid picking - as you mention - help to create his particular legato sound. Also, I did not realize how much chromatic passing or 'filling' tones he uses in his lines. That was an eye-opener for me.
