Perhaps increasing input to 20dB created clipping? Try to monitor the input in your DAW software, and see if the metter is going above 0dB. It shouldn't go above.

Usually you have to really tweak these plugins, I remember it took me a while to get decent sounds from guitar rig, but I had to change a lot of things within it, make sure you have a noise gate, and not too much distortion

He told me to record a left and right track preferably 2 takes so its as if two people played them. From that you pan one to the left and one to the right. The stock sounds may not be that hot. LIke Daniel, I had to really tweak it to get good tones. I also added a preamp and stopped using the Amp Head module and started using the SANS AMPish module instead. Also, I was using two control room modules to help with room tone and reduce the software"ish" sound.
