Hi Ulrik! Welcome to your thread for the Gab's Army Mentoring Project!
Please post here your goals and expectations regarding this project as well as some links of you playing solo and rhythm guitar. I have seen and graded your REC takes but It will be easier for me to have some videos here. This project is to help you so I will be giving you assignments and also we will join Collabs. Here is my story.
I've been a member and playing for a long time, so I know a lot of stuff and techniques, but unfortunately I don't play anything very well. I guess when you don't have a teacher from the beginning, you develop some bad habits. So this is what I want: Improve my playing by Learning and mastering new techniques Getting to a point, where I can improvise Being able to play a lot faster Being able to play a lot tighter Getting rid of that recording fever Recording good quality tracks AND STRUCTURE OF MY LEARNING I only know two ways of recording my stuff, and that is through my GNX4 guitar board or with my camera phone. And that does not always turn out satisfying I think I don't have any fancy stratocaster or big amps. In the REC videos I play my Wasburn WM17, and that is through a lousy squier amp, that I bought 15 years ago. I will get some drum software really soon, that is really needed. I don't have anything on video right now, but I'll do something this friday if you'd like. I normally take time each weekend for recording. I like playing a lot of different genres, but I mostly listen to melodic metal. A non-metal collab would not scare me. Home work is OK Sorry if this sounds like chaos, and that I need help with everything

Hi Ulrik! Thanks for this complete post about you. We must organize all your ideas and create a routine to make your daily practice more effective. In this first week we will work on a lesson for Rhythm because I need that you need to adjust your timing and also on the first part of my Intensive Technique Course to start training your left hand.
Rhythm Guitar We will use this lesson by Lian called Epic Metal Rhythm to work on your palm muting and timing. Start using the slower tempo backing tracks and post audio clips here of your progress. As soon as we have the up tempo version at a considerable level we can go for the REC version. This lesson includes some. The idea is to play this exercises 40 minutes every day all this week and record your take in 6 days. LESSON #1 – WARMING UP & ENDURANCE Work on this exercises and record yourself playing it. Concentrate on the sound, the volume of each note (it should be the same for each note), not on the speed. Play it the faster than you can but the limit must be when you start to loose clearness. There isn't a tempo required for this ones. I just want to see you playing the exercises clean. This would be all for this week. It sounds like a good plan to do Lians lesson.
I willl do some takes during friday-saturday-sunday. Today, I will try and practice 40 min. now before going to bed. I guess I can manage 30-60 min. every weekday but more in the weekend. I just need to get into my new routine, with work and going to bed early (that means before midnight) Yes I know pinch harmonics. That sounds great! It's important to keep at least those 30 minutes every day. Let's see what happens with the harmonics with Lian's lesson and basing on that we can then plan working on something to master this technique in the lower strings (like Zakk Wylde).

Hi Ulrik! It's great to see you working hard!!  The warming up exercises sounds good, even the timing is just perfect! Are you using Alternate Picking or Sweep Picking? Keep on playing it and now concentrate on getting the same volume for each note. The Hendrix tune sound also good. You have to make the chord changes sound smoother now. Maybe you could decrease a bit the tempo and try to make it sound groovier and smoother. Also I would love to hear it with less drive, that Hendrix's tone created with clean Marshall channel with maybe a boos of Tube Screamer is perfect for this type of stuff. Also thanks for the music links. This makes me know you a bit more... we will do something with some of those songs. -------------------- My lessons

This warm up can use some more practice.
I tried sweep at 135 bpm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plDZVprszHY My hands/fingers get tired after a couple of rounds Alternate at 120 bpm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M49Za2mhoJQ I hit wrong strings, and the notes sound unequal. Strangely I can only start with an upstroke. If I start with a downstroke, then when I get back to the D-string 1st. or 2nd. time, I have somehow done 2 up- or downstrokes in a row so when I begin with the D-string again I'll start with upstroking. I don't know why. I actually played that lesson by Lian earlier (a long time ago), so I already know it. I'll try and manage to record it very soon. The other small excercises I have only tried playing briefly. -------------------- |

The sweep picking version sound better but I think that you should try to play stronger each note (and at the same volume). I think that you could work on a slower tempo but concentrating on that. The alternate picking need more work, but this is because it is a bit more difficult. Starting with an upstroke makes it easier because it allows you cross string with "inside picking" that means that you play up in one string and then down in the adjacent higher string. I think that you should keep on working on this one and start working on the other warming up exercises. Keep on working hard! -------------------- My lessons

Hi Ulrik! Thanks for this take! You are on the right track on his one but it needs some more days of practice.
Here we go with some comments: Your alternate picking with palm muting need some work, because you lose a bit the timing every time you have AP triplets. I have just written this exercises to add to this week's routine:

Number of downloads: 166Practice it with metronome at different tempos until your hand gets tired. The harmonics sound good but you could angle your right hand pick a bit more to make sound even better. Also pick those notes stronger and start the vibrato some milliseconds after you pick to let the note sound a bit. The arpeggios at 00:25 are also a difficult part so my suggestion is to isolate that part and practice it over metronome as a loop.  I did another take of the Epic Metal Rythm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBDpaNM9sxw I think I'll use it for the REC program, it's not perfect but good enough to pass? The backing track, especially the bass drum is a bit too loud. Those Pinch harmonics are another thing that is causing problems, it's still hard for me to produce the same sound each time. The E-string is the biggest problem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5OgSfPFS0g I tried with palm muting and thirds too. This is an average take, I could probably do better if I did 10-15 recs of this, but this is how it would sound most of the time You are good at finding my weak spots. I really do not like stretching 9-5-8.I only manage, if I'm allowed time to really place my fingers. It hurts my small hands. Hi Ulrik! Thanks for all these videos! It's great to find you motivated!
The lesson: It sounds god, I think that it's ok for the REC, and that it will pass. It's a better take compared to your previous one but it still need work on the same things. Timing shoudl be even tighter, and your palm muting sound coulg be improved. It seems that sometimes you should mute the strings a bit more to get that Trash Metal sound. Concentrate on those two things and the take will be even better. Please post it at the REC to receive more feedback about it! The harmonics: I had the some problem when I was beginning with this technique. It's difficult make it sounds everytime that you decide it when you are new on pinch harmonics. You get the correct sound many times so you really understand and know how to get it, now you must practice it at least 10 minutes every day to get used to make it sounds at every time that you decide it. The is something cool about the intervals that you can get. Have you checked this tutorial about it? https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Pinch-Harmonics-Workout/ Thirds: I think that you really need to train your rhythm with exercises like this one! There I can note that you clearly need to improve this. In this case you are muting the strings to much and the notes don't sound clear. 9-8-5 This exercises are really difficult. The independence between fingers 3 and 4 is something difficult to get so that's why this exercises are important and very effective.
