1 in 365 is pretty good odds compared to what folks who play the lottery get ... 1 in 300,000,000 or so wink.gif

This thread was indeed enlightening. Haven't bought used gear yet. I was about to buy and old Dave Mustaine Jackson, but, mom dad didn't allow because they are too scared of buying used guitars and they think that a guitar would sound worse after 20 years. Now I know that the opposite is true. Used gear, here I come biggrin.gif After I save some money of course laugh.gif

Very, very good points here, Ken smile.gif I do believe in magic and us people, sometimes, when we put our mind and spirit to it, we can accomplish truly magical things. Not with a magic wand sort, but the human magic wink.gif

Well, it would be amazing to buy a used guitar and magically receive a famous ex-owner's playing abilities, eh? biggrin.gif

So, Cosmin, when are you selling me one of your guitars ? smile.gif Did I tell you I always liked your Paul Allender and that Ibanez JEM wink.gif

I'll have to buy one of Todd's Ibanez's too tongue.gif Not because I am a big Ibanez fan, but because I want that MOJO biggrin.gif tongue.gif

Well, I am indeed selling my Ibanez JEM 77SK - I'll put it on eBay and in a few shops I have contacted outside that have agreed to offer it for sale and in return I would offer a comission if it will sell.

The price will be pretty big, since it's made in '89, kept in great condition and signed by 11 internationally famed artists.

But yes, indeed, older instruments tend to grow in terms of value, especially ones that have been discontinued as series and they were great instruments even at the time they were being produced. For instance, I learned that my Yamaha FG365s acoustic, was a pretty sought after guitar back in the day it was released and sold as a series instrument and now, since it's not being produced anymore, it's even more interesting smile.gif I for one love it!

One thing I want to point out. Being a engineering technical kinda of person in my day job I can tell you, guitars arn't as fragile as people make them out to be. Keeping them at the right temp and humidity does help them stay setup properly and reduce the risk of a neck twisting.

There is only a few things that can make a guitar unsalvageable (from a economic point of view) and thats a snapped headstock (and even this can be repaired) and a twisted neck (and yet again this can actually be repaired (most the time) if you really need too). The trick is seeing these problems to make sure you get the guitar at the right price. Factor in the work required and then decide if that total is worth it.

One tip is learning to check for a twisted neck. That is one of the most expensive things to fix.

Also guitar pickups loose their magnetic field over their life time and the output of them drops off (this does take a long time but increases the more you have it near a magnetic field so leave your guitar away from ur speaker cab) Some people like these slightly mellowed pickups tho.

Anyway just a few pointers for people

My mind is made up smile.gif It's just an object and I am not using it anymore for at least 2-3 years. It only gathers dust and it's more likely for another person to enjoy using it or just seeing hanging on a wall, rather than myself wink.gif

I'd have to completely agree with that...

I've sold guitars that I thought I could never live without, but in reality, they had been sitting in their cases, unplayed, for a long time...

It's funny how we think we can't live without something that in reality we're not using at all, or isn't contributing to our musical goals...

And after I sold those "can't live without them" guitars, I've found that... Yes, I can...

Because that's one of the big secrets to living a happy life smile.gif Nothing will ever hurt you and you won't feel pain when losing someone dear. Love without attachment is a very difficult thing, because we associate loving something or someone, with being attached to it smile.gif Yash, your ancestors have very interesting persectives on the matter - you need to start reading, matey wink.gif

+1 on this.

I've sold some music gear and other items which I wasn't happy about at the time, but I don't regret anything now. It feels good slightly "uncluttering" your life from items you don't really use. I always feel great when I get something which I use a lot and hate rush decisions which result in items/things not getting used much and gathering dust.

I can't think if I've ever regretted selling anything. Since I don't remember then probably not.

But ... I have been very happy of a few things I didn't sell (for whatever reasons?) because I ended up really digging them or needing them later.

Good points here from Bogdan and Ken

- decluttering your life is something we all must do on a regular basis - I found out that it feels AMAZINGLY good!
- thinking REALLY well about what you sell and WHY, is a preliminary step in the process which might save you regrets and a lot of fuss getting it back, or getting something similar back when you will later on need it smile.gif

I thought very well about selling my JEM and I think my decision making process is a healthy one!
