Hello folks,

Okay, I entered an acoustic intro into the latest collab HERE. This was recorded using an SM57 into a 2nd Gen Scarlett 18i8 and is the "reference" sound below.

I've just got an Audio Technica 2020, one of the recordings (A or B) was done on my 2nd Gen Scarlett 18i8 and the other was done on my 3rd Gen Scarlett Solo that I use at my holiday home, I used the AIR circuit. Which one do you think is the 3rd Gen with AIR activated? And which sounds better to your ears? They were both recorded using a Sigma 000ME+ but I can record somemore on a Yamaha FG411c instead (Jumbo) if you want.

Mic was set near the 12th fret in both cases.

Cheers

Congrats on the new mic. cool.gif

Probably B is the AIR circuit? I never used it but the sound character suggested to me something extra is going on. As for which is better is hard to say, maybe for single notes A and chords strums B might be overall preferable.

Another vote for "B".
How was the level using the 2020?

On the 2nd Gen (none AIR) the gain knob was at almost 3 o clock and I could red line it easily with the gain just past that. On the 3rd Gen the knob was at 2 o clock. Both knobs have the same start and finish points so the AIR seems to do something.

For the record, the halo (peak) lights on the 3rd Gen are worth trading for all by themselves cool.gif

Very good, just a small tip; unlike DI electric guitar, with acoustic guitar mic.ed especially keep a safe distance to the peak indicator lights. Safer headroom will provide a tiny bit more 3D feel to the sound and don't worry noise won't be an issue.

Thanks Mertay, I'm enjoying this discovery and am thinking of getting a 3rd Gen 18i8 just because it's a sweet piece of kit. I like the flexibility of four (eight) inputs just for the times I want to have a fiddle with different sources at the same time. Net really required but better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it wink.gif

Cheers and thanks for the advice cool.gif

Great stuff Phil! Congrats on your new mic!! It sounds really good! As Mertay said, B for chords and A for single notes is a good idea! But you could go for B to simplify and use an EQ if you need to cut some of the extra frequencies that AIR function adds.

Thanks Gab,

The AIR circuit can be switched off, its just a button on the front. I'll do a back to back test just on the Scarlett Solo, they say the mic pre-amps are better on the 3rd Gen regardless of whether you use AIR or not, I'll also have the mic further away wink.gif

Okay, final two tests, in the last test you were all correct, B is the 3rd Gen with AIR switched on. Next two, both through 3rd Gen Scarlett Solo, one with AIR on and one off with the mic about a foot (30cm) from the guitar.

I guess X is aired, but what I noticed more was the distance difference was very recognizable compared to the first comparison which is always a good thing.

I'm also liking that air feature for AC guitar, it sounds a bit more overall balanced but for this comparison the mic. positioning felt like it could be better.

Once you memorize sonically what the air feature does, it seems best to first engage and then experiment mic. position to taste cause if say turned off it felt like will affect the tone so much you'll have to change mic. position again. For AC guitar I'll be recommending that interface to friends, very nice feature.

Question; Does it work when di guitar is connected too? likely better to turn off for such use but I'm curious smile.gif

I can't test that because the Solo doesn't have dual inputs like the 18i8, there is one XLR and one 1/4, it's great for what it is, a USB powered interface with great portability but I guess unless I upgrade my 2nd gen 18i8 we'll have to research. I think it only applies to the mic preamp though, even on the dual input versions.

Cheers

I've found something not very good with the Solo.

My power supply for the 18i8 has stopped working, luckily I brought my Scarlett Solo home from my holiday home when it closed for the winter (and Covid restrictions) . It's great for my holiday home as I don't have speakers and only use headphones there, at home though, I plugged the headphones in, pressed the "direct monitor" button and the sound still comes out of the speakers, it does drop in volume very slightly but to use headphones exclusively you have to pull the speaker cables out.

Not a good design, I don't know why it can't be like the 18i8 where you have a "mute" button for the speakers.

Just thought I'd let you know wink.gif

Cheers

yeah seems to keep the price down they didn't include the headphone volume control. Did you check its control software?

Yeah, when you click on "output routing" you get a message saying "Output Routing is not Supported on this Device”. I think the 2i2 is the same.

As I said, it's ideal for my holiday home (static caravan) and on a budget I'd still buy one and just pull the speakers.

Cheers

Hi Phil

I was going to buy the Scarlett Solo. Good thing I seen this post as I was intending to use it with both monitor speakers and headphones

Thanks for the heads up smile.gif

Glad you got some help. I guess it wouldn't be a major ball ache if the Solo is on your desk to just pull the speaker plugs out thugh, it is a great little unit apart from that one flaw.

A have had two of them before then sold them. This time round am going to be using headphones more often. Am happy to pay more for a unit that doesn't require pulling the speaker cables.

I mainly use an 18i8 which is great.

Brilliant, though do check the headphone thing with the 2i2, I think it's the same as the Solo, ie, headphones permanently active.

I use the Line 6 G10 Relay which I'm very happy with, purely to get rid of the cable,
