First of all- you are awesome-thank you for taking the time to answer in this forum.

I wanted to ask you what the proper way was to learn and understand the guitar. It seems like simply memorizing different scales without the proper interjection of theory is almost pointless. Can you tell me what I need to know to play like you and in what order I need to know these things? You obviously know a lot of scales- notes on the fretboard- advanced chords over the fretboard-- what is the best order/way to learn these things?

Any books you recommend? I will check out Andrew's theory lessons as per your other posting recommendation. Thanks. I guess I just don't want to learn things in the wrong order.

I never used the method "by the book",
I was listening to many players,tried to learn their chops by ear
and I wasn't paying attention on time,which is essential topic here.
So,I cannot tell you a lot about best way order in learning things,
but you should try easier stuff for the beginning,
simple scales like major,minor,pantatonic,
some basic techniques like picking,bending,legato etc.
it'll be a long journey,take your time,
you'll find tons of material here at GMC,havu fun.

Indeed^^ I started with just picking too... one tip! ( START WITH ALTERNATE PICKING IMMEDIATELY!) I learned downpicking first, and it was a pain in the youknowwhat to transfer to alternate picking:)

One of the biggest things that I've noticed in my own experience and the experiences of others in my age category, is the number of people starting over at the beginning. They've been playing for years but don't "know anything".

Keep a notebook.

Write in it whatever you like. But do note the things you've learned. And continually review these things. If you don't, and you dont use what you've learned, you'll soon forget them.

Then you'll be like us. Been playing for 15 years, don't know squat.

Like: at 14 i started out with learning some metallica songs, at 16 i started to play more neoclassical stuff, songs like....

Right,it would be nice if I could make a statement about that
but unfortunately I never tracked my progress or the things I was learning
at specific time,I was always trying to learn as much as possible,
often playing songs that were way above my level(which might be wrong sometimes).
I do remember that I started with Hammet,Murray/Smith,Knopfler and Gilmour
pretty from early beginning,rest of it was kind a natural evolution,
I really wasn't paying attention on what am I playing/learning
cause I've had fun while doing it all the time.

Seconded, even though I haven't been playing for a long while. Alternate Picking is a pain to attempt, because downstrokes only are so- so- much simpler (unless we're talking about sixteenth notes.)
