I was in Guitar Center and decided to plug my strat into a Fender Deluxe Reverb tube amp. ohmy.gif Suddenly I hate my Line 6 Spider Jam! OH MY GOD!!! The sound out of that thing was ridiculous!!!! It was $1,000...and it stayed in the store. My wife would KILL me if I bought that thing! Man...I now see what all the "tube amp" hype is all about!

Look at Carvin. You can get a Vintage Bel Air for About $600 with shipping. They sound great. I just changed the tubes on mine, set the bias myself (it is easy). Fender is fine. But you just bet more for your money with a Carvin. But don't get the Vintage 16. It is more of a specialty amp, which is ok. But the Bel Air is what you want. You don't hear a lot of people say bad things about them. In fact, I never have.

edit: correction, they are $100 more.

Still, way better way to go than a Fender at this price. Mine just sounds great. I often play just right into it, even though I have all kinds of effects, it sounds so good, even at very low volumes.

I know what you mean Ben. I had a Marshall solid state half stack (which has been sold btw) and plugged into a little twin reverb and was like...WHAT!! That was the first tube experience for me and If I could justify the cost, I'd have one now!! laugh.gif No comparison..
UncleSkillet
I agree with others. There is know substituite for a really good tube amp and how it feels when you jam through it.

Stay away or pay biggrin.gif laugh.gif

anyway... you could always tell your wife that it costs less than it did...

"how much did you pay for that?"

"what this old piece of junk? I got it at a yardsale for $30" laugh.gif ph34r.gif

Sorry if a joke is misplaced here - but people usually work hard to be able to buy expensive amps. So in some weird way you can consider yourself lucky! laugh.gif ph34r.gif

If you are serious about playing, I don't know why anyone even thinks about $700 or so. Even if you are poor.

Regarding the wife, here you go. Leaves plenty for that nice 50W combo amp with 2 good 12 inch speakers. Get a dog for companionship. I have an Uncle who had mental problems, I thought he had a real loving loyal wife. She put him away. Dog will never do that.

I share your feeling man ... So many times I went to the store and tried things out but at the end didn't have financial source to just grab it right there smile.gif
Luckily right now things have switched all the way for me. I am really good friends with person who owns music shop in my town , and he endorsed me with POD X3 Live along with speakers and awesome mixer for live performance. I also get strings for free and other things like fretboard cleaner and all the other products. In exchange I go to his shop whenever he has busy day and just take a guitar and do some solo stuff , that eventually leads to customers buying guitars, amps and asking about lessons smile.gif

I would always feature GMC, GMC is unsurpassed, nobody else even comes close. But I will ask first before I gave credit to GMC for anything I show (which may be pretty soon), best to not assume. There is this lady in town with all kinds of weird yard art, her whole property looks like some crazy person's insane junk yard. I am sure it looks good to her though. She had an Obama sign during the recent election. I am sure the Obama people would have asked her to put a McCain sign up in place of that.
Ivan Milenkovic
Yeah, it's definitely hard not to have your own tube amp, but don't worry, it's not the gear that makes the fine player. If you are consistent enough and practice, the great gear will come by itself.

Does anyone know how this amp would sound with a Metal Muff plugged into it? Is it a very one dimensional clean tone amp only? Or would it sound good for metal too with a good distortion pedal?

Easily solutiuon.

Buy it and sell your other amp. smile.gif You might not get what you paid for it but it will be at least money off the new one.
My wife hates me because I do that stuff all the time.

Get what you want. If ya dont youll always wonder what it will be like. smile.gif
And you only live once. I say go buy it. Matter a fact go buy 2 for stereo sound! smile.gif

I have a strat as well, and I'm buying a deluxe reverb soon smile.gif Not to rub it in your face or anything, but you played a great one. And to answer your question, yes, it actually does real well with any kind of pedal, fender amps in general do in my experience. I had a hot rod deluxe, and for a long time, I used metal muff with it as my main source of destruction, and it sounded great. I tried it on my dad's vibrolux reverb (a 2x12) and it sounded really good as well. You will not be disappointed.

Hello, my name is Ivan Milenkovic - I am a gearhead. ph34r.gif biggrin.gif

Here's my confession: At first my girl and I were having some arguments about me buying expensive gear. She just couldn't understand. But after a while she figured out that I'm an gear addict, so she left me alone. I leave her to do the shopping, and I go to music stores. Everyone has some things that makes them happy in life, so that's the whole point. If you feel like you should be a tube Fender amp, and you really know that this is the right thing to do, I don't think anybody can feel bad about it. Just sell the Spider, collect some money and go for it! smile.gif

The Deluxe Reverb amp is good for blues, but is not a high gain amp. Use an overdrive pedal rather than a distortion pedal so as to not color the tone of the amp. Check out the new Vox Satchurator, the BB Preamp, or the Radial Tonebone for a top-notch overdrive. Good luck with the wife versus gear thing. I've been there, it was really stinky.

Don't forget Ebay! I wanted a tube amp but was discouraged by the price, especially of the nice Fenders. I was considering a Blues Junior, but after doing some research, I found a Peavey Delta Blues on Ebay, 1 year old and only used a few times, for half price. 30 watts and a 15 inch speaker, I'm loving that sound.

Best part for me, it's Made in USA, Mississippi in fact, for sure the home of Delta Blues!

Rule of thumb in my house.

#1 If I can get it in the house and get rid of the box without getting caught...then it's always been there.

#2 You can't go wrong with a black guitar. I've got 4 or 7 of them. She doesn't care.

Tube amp is a must for a gigging or a serious recording guitarist!
I can't remember the last time that I played a non-tube amp smile.gif and the last time I played a gig with a transistor amp was 5 years ago and I'm gigging constantly!

But!!! If you're only playing at home at low volumes and it's just a hobby for you, maybe you don't need an expensive tube amp!
It's your decision!

And concerning your wife - communication is the key wink.gif if you tell her how much it would mean to you to have that amp, I'm sure she would say it's ok!
