I could use a little help from someone out there, I am working on some randy rhoads stuff to add some new techniques and was wondering why the main riff in crazy train is giving me so much trouble.

does anyone out there play it and if so does the muted part of the riff start with an up stroke or down stroke?

it feels a little weird to hit every other chord on an up stroke. I wanna make sure I got it down right.

I would play it purely downstroke for heavy attack feelin'

Most heavy riffs sounds better with hard downstroles

I know this song but am not sure which part you mean? The intro riff is alternate picking and I mute it lightly to keep the notes from ringing and i do thar throughout the entire piece.
I play the rhythm that follows in the verse with galloping on an open muted A-string and chording from the D-string down. Meaning your A-chord (and the following chords) starts on the D-string on 7'th fret.
Listen closely to the galopping to get the same rhythm going. Every other section is half beat off but after 4 turns it falls into place... *grmbl* Someone with music theory knowledge probably has a word for it. Tripletbackbeathalabaloo.
I suggest you find the thread I posted "Practicing program". Slow the song down and try to follow.
ALL chords are downstrokes.

Yes, I was talking about the main rhythm riff that starts with the galloping. maybe it's the half beat throwing me off but it seems when you listen closely to the first couple of times randy does it there is only 3 muted notes in the gallop starting the riff (after that they seem to vary)

I was wondering if the he actually starts the riff with a muted "Down Down Up" strokes then the chord or all alternate picking which would leave you up stroking the chord which seems not right

I USED to play it like (miss = missing or pausing an up or downstroke, An the Chord rings long enough to start the next set with a downstroke) Down miss Down Up DownChord Down Up Down miss DownChord Down Up Down miss DownChord etc
But after listening closely I find that he plays the same amnout of tones each time so that was wrong. I will listen again now I think just to make sure....


All chords come on a downstroke. NOW I play it like this
Down Up Down Up DownChord - Down Up Down Up DownChord etc.
Counting OneTwoThreeFourFiiiiveOneTwoThreeFourFiiive
..and on Five is the Chord
