I just wanted to start off by saying great lessons! I recently joined and have already found many of your lessons to be helpful and I'm trying to learn a few as we speak (or type ).

Anyways, just recently I came across your Canon Rock video. I was extremely impressed by your tone and technique. If I ever had a guitar goal, it is to play that song at least half as well as you play it.

I was wondering if you had some time to help me devise some kind of routine or schedule that will cover most of the techniques and styles I will need to learn in order to achieve my goal of playing Canon Rock. Perhaps even just link some lessons that I should learn and follow progressively which could help, maybe? I have been playing for almost a year now, and I can play a handful of things ranging from Guns n Roses to a few Avenged Sevenfold songs, and a bunch of random solo's, like Nothing Else Matters and similar solo's.

I have started to gain a lot of motivation and inspiration since joining this site and I believe that I'd actually stick with the routine and work hard to reach my goals. Plus, I have like 5+ hours per day to devote to guitar this summer so I'm hoping on making the best of it .

But I've never really had any pre-set practice routines, so not sure how much help i can be

What i did in my first years, and even today, was to simply figure out my favourite songs, and play along to them while trying to learn every nuance of the song. Preferably without any tabs/notation.
You will usually encounter quite a number of different techniques and playingstyles in just one song, so it's a nice and fun way to learn alot.
It beats playing along to a metronome

But most importantly, Only play when you feel like playing.
I believe that forcing yourself to play a certain number of hours each day might have a negative effect because your brain isnt always in "learning mode" so to speak.
1 hour can be just as good as 10 hours if your in the right zone.

What lesson-level do you reckon your at right now? I can drag out some of my favourite lessons in your current level

Yeah a lot of people have suggested that I set a practice routine/schedule and that will make me more focused (prior to coming to GMC) and when it was time for me to practice, I just felt like it was forced and wasn't something that I wanted to do anymore, and it felt like a chore. So you're definitely right about the "play when you feel like it" part

But right now I'd say that Im at around a level 5 or so. You think you could show me some of your favorite lessons you find helpful somewhere around that level? Or maybe a little higher even, so I can try to push myself a bit.

im sorry to post on your forum but i wrote a PM to JadedWolf465 but i think that more people can find it useful
here is a quote of it

video one is pretty much a no brainer,
video two you need to have a very strong barre to both barre and do all the pull offs and the other things there, this Pinch Harmonics aren't very important cause they make it much more difficult and at those speeds are barely audiable.

video 3 is pretty easy too

in video 4 there are 3 things you should notice the 8th box is pretty difficult to execute that fast and go back to the first position again. PH isnt really necessary and makes it more complicated
in the 11 box you need to be able to roll your finger to sweep 3 strings cleanly
you need 3 and 2 string rolling a lot in this so practice this lesson alot "Five Exercises to Improve Sweep Now!"

you also need 5 string sweeping which is pretty difficult to learn especially at this speed,
watch this video "Sweeping Basics Lesson" and the 2 following in the series and many other sweeping lesson

video 5 is the coolest and simplest just practice it with strictly alternate picking for as much time as you need to do it no magic there

video 6 in one of the hardest because of the beginning fast alternate picking and the fast Alterante at the end, one tip i can tell you besides practicing slow that in the last alternate trond uses figers 1,2,3 and not 1,2,4 like you're used to.

you need to practice a bit of tapping but this isnt a very complicated lick,
some sweeping is need again. the pull of section is pretty easy if you spend some time doing to slowly, actually the hardest part is playing the one note and the one muted on the same string in the 3rd box

nothing to special here

the hardest section, the start isn't that hard but just remember to lift your finger after every note in the start, after that there is a super fast hard alternate picking, the only solution to it is to practice it slowly a lotttt and that slowly picking up the pace. than you you have various 3 string arpeggios, you need to practice almost all 3 string arpeggios shapes, mostly the finger rolling though, its pretty fast and hard to do clean but its just lots of hard sweeping and work

in the one string long legato section you need to slide between one position to the next ,thats the trick,
and the final legato just practice a bit of pentatonic legato and your should have it in no time

and last thing about tronds tone, its a mystery to me, i just cant get close to it, if you make a break through tell me lol."

I'm currently going over the videos that Vampire posted, as well as learning the Sweet Child O Mine solo(If I'm somewhere at a level 5, think its too soon for me to try and learn it?) and I'll start going over these as well.
