Andrew,
I'm working on pentatonic shifting using the first 2 boxes.
box/pattern 1: Root notes are high and low E strings 5th fret and D string 7th fret.
box/pattern 2: Root notes are D string 7th fret and B string 10th fret.
My question is this, Kris's tab shows a shift on the G string 9\7. If shifting from root note, would'nt we shift on the D string 10\7?
Just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly.
Thanks!
Steve

Hi Steve,
Kris' intention in that lesson is to show you how to connect 2 boxes up. The really important rule is that you slide from one note in the lower box to another note in the higher box, or the other way around. There is no need to think specifically about root notes - you are trying to make some sort of a run of notes that stays within the pentatonic scale, yet at one point shifts between boxes.
Fret 9 on the G string is an E, Fret 7 is a D - both of these notes are in the A minor Pentatonic scale (which is i thkn the scale you are working with from your description) so you can slide between them just fine

So If I'm understanding correctly, 9\7 shift on the G String would be shifting from note "E" at fret 9 to note "D" at fret 7. As long as we follow the pattern of notes that 's in the Pentatonic shape's then were fine?

Exactly!
And in so doing, you have played to notes E followed by D, and at the same time moved boxes, ready to play more notes of course.

Thanks Andrew!
I just finished reading your theory basic's and boy did it open my eyes!
I printed off the note chart and hung it on the wall right above my amp.
Man, thanks again! This does'nt seam near as complex once you look at it from a note perspective.
