The situation is as follows:
I recently bought two notation books, one with a lot of famous classical pieces and one with traditional Finnish songs. And I was just wondering, now I have alot of notes, but not single one of them say anything about beats per minute... So how am I supposed to know how long every note goes on for? something I'm not seeing here?

does it have any strange itallian words such as andate, allegro or something similar to that?

They usually describe tempo with an Italian word at the beginning of the piece(and throughout if tempo changes occur).
Something like Moderato(moderately), or Allegro(fast) or Andante(at an easy walking pace) or Largo(slow) etc etc.

A little list...

Largo 40-60 bpm
Larghetto 60-66 bpm
Adagio 66-76 bpm
Andante 76-108 bpm
Moderato 108-120 bpm
Allegro 120-168 bpm
Presto 168-200 bpm
Prestissimo 200-208 bpm


Usually the "beat" is the quarter note.

These values are indicative.
Mmmm... only notes and chords...
If you don't have some records, it's hard, but you can just play the songs at the speed you like.
