Just a little question:

Does it make any difference sound/tone wise, if you play with your audio interface ( PX5D f.e. ) connected with the USB, or plugged straight into your audio card???

I'm just asking, 'cause I was thinking of purchasing the E-MU 0404 or the 1212M audiocard, and I don't want to waste my money....

So please, share your thoughts

I think there is no difference in guitar recording but you should have a good soundcard anyway if you want to mix things properly. Your PX5D is a guitar tool. What about drums, samples, DSP effects, more outputs for mixing...? All these things are not available from your unit. I have EMU 0404 and works great. You don't even need a mixing desk, it has it all included in the software.

You're right.... I found this package, that comes with a emulator X software and E-MU Audiocard 1212M, only 239 €...

It will make a difference. Whether it's a good difference or a bad difference is subjective and depends on your equipment.

If you're going into your system over USB from the P5XD, you're sending the data over as a data stream instead of an audio stream.

If you go from the P5XD to an audio input on a sound card and you're going in on one of the analog audio inputs (instead of a digital audio inputs) the P5XD is converting the audio to analog, then sending it and then your sound card's converting it back to a digital stream. It'll sound different than if you go over USB.

Better? Worse? Depends. I'd just say "different".

Absolutely. No disagreement there. Not much change. If the sound card's good, you might not even notice the difference if you're not listening for it too hard.

I only have laptops in the house now, or I'd try to do an a/b recording to see.

Ok, I bought ESI's Juli@ audio interface, and I have all the drivers and stuff installed....

Now I have some question about the connections.. correct me if I am wrong

I connect my PX5D with a stereo klotz straight into my audiocard's Line In plug-ins ( no matter which goes right or left )
Then I just connect my two studio monitors ( which are BTW also ESI's ) into the Line Out plug-ins ( here obviously right line out to the right speaker and the left speaker to the left speaker ) with a normal stereo plug-in.... Am I right???

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I just want to make sure that everything goes where they shuould be and nothing gets damaged...

I agree with Emir, the sound will not be that much different, it will be still coming from your unit.

Actually I would avoid using two AD/DA conversions as much as possible cause each one degrades the signal. First in converters in Pandora, and then converters in soundcard. Although if you get 0404 or 1212m, the converters are enough quality to not notice the difference at all.

There is one more thing, I also plan to buy 1212m package soon, and I must say it is a very clever buy. Although it is a similar card to 0404 in terms of processing, it has much better converters that will surely make the difference. Also it has EDI interface, where you can connect their external box unit, or some other unit to support more inputs.

And regarding P5XD to EMU, it you buy any EMU, use the EMU as ASIO card of course, and plug the P5XD to it - not because it will give you the better sound, but because EMU is a proper soundcard, and P5XD is, as Emir stated, more guitar tool then soundcard.

You must enable monitoring of that guitar input before you hear the sound. You can do that in 2 ways.

1. Either you got some kind of application that goes along with your interface, and enables you to monitor the signal (similar how Gearbox app is bundled with Toneport interface)
2. Or you open some DAW, like Reaper or Cubase, open audio channel, choose input for that channel to be the input from your interface, and enable monitoring on that channel.
