Lets get started Frederik!
In your guitar CV there was very good balance of goals in my opinion.
Phrasing, guitar fretboard knowledge (arpeggio, modes), improvising and theory and harmony.
For your
1st assignment I decided to assign you
soloing with arpeggios. As you may already know, I had collaboration that was soloing with chord tones/arpeggios. This will be perfect opportunity for you to learn arpeggios and use them in musical context.
Here is your
1st assignment :
-
Record a solo using chord tones and arpeggios over collaboration backing track found
HERE.
-
One time through the whole thing is enough but I encourage you to submit multiple takes and choruses in order to expand ideas and creativity.
-
Record video of yourself playing it, upload it to Youtube and embed it in this thread.
-
Make sure you read my suggestions and follow arpeggio diagrams in thread HERE.
Deadline for your 1st assignment is one week from today (13th of September). If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here I will be glad to help you out.
Extra assignment : -
Read this theory post (using link below) and expand your knowledge of major scale and its modes. You will have a short test in the future for this!http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...st&p=418884

Great! I will shortly give you some questions regarding theory post. Regarding chord tones and arpeggios, I would like you to do couple of choruses (3 or 4) improvising with arpeggios.
I am providing you looped backing track in this thread.

Nice, should it be improvisations, or should i compose, i can improvise very well over it, but i dont think of arpegio shapes, i just play by ear then
Pedja Simovic
Sep 6 2009, 11:53 AM
It should be improvised yes. Make sure you don't use any scale notes but just chord tones and arpeggios. Also try to make it as melodic as possible!

Yikes !
3 mins of impro without my beloved minor/major scale.. damn, thats a tough one
Pedja Simovic
Sep 6 2009, 12:22 PM
If 3 minutes is too much for you right now, do 3 choruses instead
Pedja Simovic
Sep 10 2009, 09:56 PM
Frederik how are those choruses coming along ? Need some extra help?
I am here man just let me know!

yep they are, im getting better. last 2 days have been school and homework, but as i said i'll uplod something in the weekend
though that we could do it over video chat maybe, feels kind of odd to upload a sloppy improvisation, guees my perfectionism is kind of blocking in that matter

No worries Frederik. Upload something over the weekend and we will take it from there. I appreciate you being perfectionist about your takes, really do, but I also want you to finish your assignments so we can cover new things

Frederik this is coming along. I can see and hear that you are still not totally free with improvising in this area. It would be good for you to upload some more (like you said) and to compare improvement between videos. I think you are on a good way, keep working on it!

i think i need a backing track where the duration of the chords is longer, i cant think fast enough to improvise over this one, i have to prepare myself everytime :S

I could perhaps try to do one for you with twice as long changes, but it will not sound as progressing as this one?

Ok Frederik no problem. I will send you some II V I chord progression so you can work over 3 types of arpeggios there

Frederik,
Here is the II V I backing track from
THIS lesson. You can also find arpeggio graphs in that lesson!
Bass in backing track is in octave lower range then it should be but don't let that stop you in practicing soloing with arpeggios and chord tones!
I will be out of my town today, back tomorrow. Let me know if you have any questions or need any help with it!

Ok Frederik, sounds good. For time being focus on your audition pieces. It would be nice if you recorded them before Friday and posted them here. That way I can give you some hints and tips for them

would be cool, i like hearing different ideas on how to improvise only with chord tones. and how to do it simple
cause thats my aim for time being

Ok Frederik.
I will simplify it even further. I will do just roots, then Roots and 3rds, then Roots 3rds and 5ths , then Roots 3rds 5ths and 7ths. So that makes it total of 4 choruses of playing.

I will upload today choruses with chord tones that I mentioned earlier. That should help you create your own solo and free up your thinking when improvising!

Here is the example of just using Roots, then Roots and 3rds, Roots 3rds and 5ths and finally Roots 3rds 5ths and 7ths!
You should practice this way over backing tracks so you can get a grasp of where the notes are on the fretboard. Then later on you can start making melodies and jumping between the notes!
I am expecting your take to be similar to this one. Let me know if you have any questions!
