Hey Alex thx for taking care of me xD.
First of I need to clarify that Im right-handed sorry for the confusion there.

Allright as I said my weakness is definitely coordination between hands. I also seem to rush things when in fact I might not be rdy to go on ( For instance when training with a metronome I tend to go up quite fast not noticing any mistakes I might have made on slower tempos. In general my one big weakness is my dedication to achive a certain level of mastering this Instrument. Its the only thing I kept doing over the years and I hated myself for not being more disciplined when i started playing. I sometimes tend to push myself into frustration to the point where I dont like to play anymore.
That is somehow a strong point too because I am generally motivated to push my limits.

For my goals:

I want to be able to grasp my fretboard and to play musically and free on the guitar.
Id like to be able to play at decent speed and Improvise over a variety of musical styles
I want to learn about Songwriting and chord changes especially in regard to the modes. I know quite a few but I dont know how to make a mode specific song.

My favorite Guitarists and Musicians are:

ACDC for being an amazing Rockband with very impressive rhythm playing.
Steve Vai for beeing just insanely versed on the guitar. I dont necessarily like all his music but he still is a master.
BB King well I started with Blues and played to his Songs a lot.
Almost everything from 80s Hairmetal its just such a powerful music and I love the style and feel of it very much ( The band Im forming will be a Glam Rock / Hair Metal band ).

All right, so much for a short answer xD.

regards Lixxx

PS:

A Dark Souls Blues

Its something I recorded on a JM4 2 or 3 years ago. It has some serious timing flaws and I completely forgot how to play it xD.
Just so you get an Impression of my playing. I have a video of me doing canon rock as well but I dont have a youtube account yet.

Alex Feather
Hi! Good job on the recording!!! I like your sound and cool ideas with the volume control!
Sounded pretty tasty and nice!
So to start we need to sync your hands together!
Most likely it's you right hand that has a problem and you need to start practicing exercises to get your hands synced together!
I came with a few!
Here they are!
The idea is to practice them very slowly using a metronome
You also need to hear the guitar pro file because there are some rhythm shifts!
Those exercises will help you develop your technique, timing and will get your hands synced very very fast!

I will give you more exercises in a couple of days and will create a backing track for you to practice!
Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions!!!

thx man,

I will get right to it and make a recording of some of my takes at different speeds.

Im rly excited

Ok I made 3 recs of the first pattern. This one was fairly simple since it has no string changing, next one will be harder biggrin.gif

once again I dont want to make the Impression of rushing it. Just so you can analyze my playing. Once I have all the ex done I will connect them and bring them up to speed again. I usually go up the tempo in 5 bpm steps.

Good job! you are a very fast learner!
A few things!
First track sounded perfect really tight and timing was great!
Second track you started to rush a little bit when switching to triplets
Third you were rushing triplets and picking except the second part you did good on this one!
The whole idea of those exercises is to practice them really slow that is the way to connect your hands together
it's more mechanical exercise and you don't need to play it at 200BPM
Slower you do it better results you will get!
Just add it to your daily routine and you will see some progress in a week!

Lixxx
Ok I will start to play them more slowly now xD

thx for your feedback

Ok I have made a very slow recording of ex. no. 4.
That is quite a challenge, but I see now what you meant with doing it slowly. When I played it fast it was hard to see if one hand was faster than the other. ;D okies

here is 60 bpm

Im practicing 50 bpm right now but I haven't had a decent take yet.

cheers Lixxx

PS: I will probably be posting a lot of stuff in here and I understand that you have a life of your own, so dont bother with commenting on everything I post. I wont be angry or annoyed or anything . biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Lixxx
ex.5

Ok I have all the exercises down laugh.gif

I played ex. 5 to the guitar pro file at 25 bpm and tried to record it..... ITS HAAAARD xD

Anyway I tried to get the timing most accurate by fingering them just as they where supposed to be played. That way I managed to get a feel for the timing in my fretting hand aswel. However, it is insanely hard recording it because of the long pauses between the clicks.
Even when playing 8th on 50bpm it was hard to concentrate after a while.

Ok I think I call it a day for now Ive been playing since I got up this morning and I cant focus anymore.

Slower you do it harder it will get!
The whole idea is to get you to really feel the groove and open up your inner timing!
Everybody has a groove inside!
You are walking, breathing, talking, blinking etc. with your own rhythm! No one has it but you!
We just need to open it up and get it connected to your hands!
I would suggest to practice it at 50BPM and really focus on what you are doing!
You will see a huge progress very quick!!!

It's my pleasure to reply to everything!
The slower track sounding much better! You got it together! I know it's hard but trust me it's worth it!
Lixxx
Hey Alex,

I was wondering if maybe we could come up with a daily routine for me. One of my main problems always has been, that I have so much that I want to do that I loose focus and just practice anything.

I am right now practicing the patterns for hands sync. Since I want to be able to create and play free over a variety of styles I really need to learn scales and their corresponding chords. As I said I dont quite get how to play over songs that escape from just playing ionian or the aeolian mode ( or simply pentatonic).
I have some basic skills in sweeping and tapping ( I even started to explore 8.Finger tapping xD) but I feel that my lack of understanding of harmony and theory is limiting me.
I realize what to practice, but I tend to practice too much issues at once. I realy could use help in coming up with a plan.

In general I have about 4-8 hours to practice since I work very few hours so I have more time for guitar. I cant say that I have time to practice EVERY day because I have to work shifts and night sometimes, but I am quite disciplined.

Im currently saving for a recording device ( br-800 because it has customizable drums.... I cant play without drums tongue.gif ) and once I get it I want to really start composing and recording. I think that playing music shows quick results because your problems become more apparent.

Ok thats that, Im really glad to have the opertunity to have you as a mentor because I feel you take real interest in you students.

Cheers Lixxx

PS: I will definitely do some of your lessons the latest is just so groovy so look forward to a take once I can record over mp3 tracks.
Alex Feather
Great! I am glad you like my latest lesson!
So let's see
say you have 6 hours to practice
1) 15 minutes warm up (You should do it every time!)
2) 45 minutes technique. You have to choose your priority technique say alternative picking and practice only that
3) 1 hour 30 minutes I would spend one hour practicing new lesson
4) 1 hour learning something new you want to do that every day
5) 30 minutes transcribing you can choose any song or any melody to transcribe
6) 1 hour Theory you can read books or do some easy tasks but try to learn theory little by little!
7) 1 hour technique you already know try to repeat and play through techniques you already know so you keep muscle memory

This is just basic idea! Let me know what you think!

That sounds great, now I just need to fill that with some specific tasks.

1. Warm up I have covered so thats done !
2. Is this the place where I should do the synchronization licks??
3. Ok so here is where I practice the Nuno Bettencourt lesson ??? Or is this where I repeat old lessons I learned aswell ?
4. Here I learn a new lesson or technique ?? so I pick something from GMC to do ?
5. Wow this I have never done, so I could definitely use some tips here but I see its essential for being able to compose.
6. With this one I would really appreciate a little direction, like a rough plan to work on so I dont miss anything.
7. Can you give me an example on the difference between this and 4. ???

Where would I practice the scales/chords???

This seems perfect!! Im really excited. Thank you

Cheers Lixxx

2. You can practice any mechanic stuff you want I would organize it this way so it's not too boring
Day 1 All Scales and modes Legato (In every key)
Day 2 Hands Synchronization lesson
Day 3 All Arpeggios in every key (5-6 strings)
Day 4 All Pentatonics scales in every key (2 and 3 note per string) Alternative picking
3. You can spend 30 minutes repeating what you have learned and for another hour learn a new lesson
4. Anything you want even if it's a short lick you still learned it and it counts! You can pick something from GMC and start learning it little by little
5. For transcribing you can join my Transcribing corner and I will guide you through!
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=43042
6. Ok so about the Theory I will start giving you some material to analyze and study!
7. The difference is that you repeat techniques you are already know
Legato, Arpeggio, Alternative picking etc. say in one key just play through once all the positions and boxes
I hope that helps let me know what do you think!
Lixxx
Allright thx that really helped me smile.gif

I will start working on it as soon as easter is over ( I need to work a lot during the next days and wont be able to play six hours)
Ok if I have more questions I will let you know and thank you very much for helping me out with the theory.

I think I will document a practice session so you can see what I have done. And see if I really got it biggrin.gif.

Cheers Lixxx

PS: 3notes/string penta ??? So just playing like A C D ( nice stretch) and then skipping a string ( because of the double note).

No 3 notes per string is the same notes but in a shape 3 notes per string you don't have to skip strings just go to the next one
Lixxx
Ok heres the guitar pro file from the etude I told you about ( xD ) Tell me what you think. Its pretty basic stuff with an neo classical feel in the second part ( well a harmonic minor wink.gif ) but as I said its supposed to be for practice purposes like alternate picking, sweeping, bit of string skipping, and some economy picking in the last part of the intro sweep ( I really like that extended sweep I never thought about it before but It sounds kinda cool)

The tempo in the tab is not my actual playing tempo but it sound really cool and Its definitely my goal xD.

Lixxx
I changed bar 13 a bit : its now, e d c b g# b a b , so it matches the pattern on the g and d string ^^

Also because of the sweep in bar 20, the pick direction changes in bar 21 to up down up down etc thats quite interesting for practice reasons
because now the reoccurring descending harmonic minor run plus the following e string lick is played in "reverse alternate picking" . xD

I would like to hear you play this etude! Sounds like a fun piece to learn!

Ok here is the Neo-Classical Part in a slow tempo.

I am able to play it full speed but especially the run on the e-string and the following sweep-arpeggio and pedal tone lick is still a bit sketchy.
Also this way I hope you can analyze some more weak points.

The extended sweep from the beginning is quite a challenge and Im working on it.

I made an entry for the Lazy Rock Collab btw, let me know how you like it.

Cheers Lixxx

PS: I didnt forget the practice session report. Im moving in a new flat and Im quite busy schlepping boxes and getting the new flat tidied-up.
Also I might have a buyer for my Amp, so hopefully you will enjoy some fresh licks, jams, and rec's once I have my recording tool ^^ .

Sounds very nice! Too much flanger tho smile.gif
I have been playing etudes for a long time and here is a couple of suggestions that might help!
1) I think you should slow down even more some of the notes weren't too clear and sometimes it sounds like you are struggling to get it up to speed!
2) Practice using a clean sound! This is a trick when you are learning etudes or any fast licks! If you can play it on clean you can play it with distortion! You will double your progress with a clean tone! (No effects at all!)

I am glad to hear that some new upgrades are coming! Very excited to hear your new recordings!

Alex Feather
Hi I just wanted to check and see how are you doing? Are you ready for a new assignment?
Lixxx
Alright Im back and all set xD

I worked on scales and made a little plan on how to practice the scales.

1. I play the modal madness ex. in different keys ( I usually pick one per session and I make notes which key I alrdy did )
2. I play the Scale on each string individually and make little exercises with them ( 3notes one back 3 notes etc.)
3. I make runs that incorporate string pairs or trios and work them down and up the neck in key.
4. I learn the chords for each mode ( with colored tones )
5. I try to record a little progression and jam over it.

Im still trying to figure out how to play modes and how to make a progression that indicates them.

Oh and for transcribing I started to work on the canon in d-major from perchelbel which I transcribed from the piano notes to play on acoustic guitar. Unfortunately on the first try my notation program collapsed and I lost my 4 hours of work. But I will do it again and then you can check it out. This rly helped me to read notation especially the F clef.

I also got an assignment to record a track for a local hip hop artist. Not exactly my kind of music but its good to do some work. Its just a very simple tune that we will record on Monday. I will show you the results.

Ok thats all cheers happy.gif Lixxx

PS: I cant record atm because I had to sell my Jm4 to get money for the br-800.
Alex Feather
Perfect! I like you plan! It looks good! Also it's very cool that you got a chance to work with a hip hop artist it will get you into new styles! I use to do some work with Timbaland and I have learned so much!

Just wanted to check and see how are you doing? Do you have any questions or need help with anything? Please let me know!
Lixxx
Since I almost have the money for my recording device, I wanted to go into mods maybe you can send me in the right direction regarding on how to be modal or point out specific modes through chords or solo. Other than that Im doing fine. Ive been practicing the Fantasie Impromptu a while back and I think my coordination has improved as Im more able to play it now xD.

Im rly looking forward to the whole writing process and I did a little jam which I will record ones able. ( its messin round with G-Penta and the open strings)

On Wednesday I will get a chance to listen to the recording I did with that hip hop artist. He completely changed the whole arrangement when we got to the studio so we had to improvise and come up with something new. Was a good experience tho.

Through that I now have the chance to accompany a professional Hip Hop artist for a concert in June . will see where thats going xD

Greetings and Cheers

I am glad that you are doing good and it sounds like you have a lot of cool things going on! smile.gif I also was wondering if you are practicing exercise I gave you and if you have any questions?
Lixxx
I do ofc. String Skipping is quite a challenge but it works good.

this rly is an unusual pattern sequence but thats good, because it is a nice difference from the usual up and down run patterns

Cheers

Well I tried to make it more interesting it will also help you to learn scales faster smile.gif
Are you ready for a new assignment?

Rdy if u are xP

I rly got some good things comming up. Starting nxt month I can FINALLY buy my recording device so I will join lots of collabs.
Hip Hop Project turned out good and even got me some money ( which is kinda nice). I also have been asked to play with another artist where I am involved in writing the music for his Songs.
Furthermore I got together a Thrash/Speed Metal band that will truly work out my wrists and coordination.
And I will join an 80s Rock Band later this year.

So as you can see I am quite content to finally have stuff to do instead of sitting in my room playing allday ( I love it .. but its nothing compared to playing in a band and actually writting stuff not jst for yourself)

So I would rly appreciate if you could help me get into the Modes and composing and all that since I rly want to broaden my horizon not only as a soloist after all thats usually a small fragment of a song and without a good backing the solo will mostly be to steril I think.

Cheers Jan

PS: I rly like your lessons in the style of your Funk Rhythms and Blues Tournarounds . That rly helps to get all the Standards and Non-Standards together. Hope there some of them coming^^

Awesome! I am glad you are getting gigs! Very happy for you!
Let's get into modes! right away! smile.gif
The easiest key to learn all the modes is G major the reason it is covering the whole neck and all the patterns are very easy to remember!
Here is a G major scale:
G - A - B - C - D - E - F#
It has 7 modes for each note of the scale!
Aeolian - Dorian - Phrygian - Lydian - Myxolydian - Ionian - Locrian
First this you have to understand that the notes will stay the same and nothing will change except of the starting note! Unless you will change the key!

So to start I would like you to learn one mode G locrian

Learn it well up and down so you don't have to think about the notes when you are playing it!
Let me know if you have any questions or need help!
Also let me know as soon as you are ready for a new assignment and I will post it right away!
Lixxx
Alright ^^

I can actually play all the 3 note per string patterns and I know the mode names for the major scale. What I dont know is... when someone says for example "Steve Vai plays lydian heres a lydian lick he plays" because I always thought that its still for instance G-major until you put it in context to a Chord-progression. I dont understand how you would make such a progression or how you would identify a lets say lydian lick. Of course playing the g major scale over a c major chord can be done but I dont belive that that is the whole trick. So If you could give me an example of a F# locrian progression or lick ( since we are doing g major now ^^ ) that would rly help me out.

I also have brief knowledge about colored tones ( like the b5 in locrian or b2/9 in phrygian ).

I feel like I have the resources, but I dont know how to use them yet.

Cheers Jan
Lixxx
ok heres what Im doing with the locrian.

I created a little pattern ( I need to come up with the descending part still) and I will do this for all the 7 mode patterns once we coverd them all. Each new mode I will add to it and then connect 2 or more strings horizontally to get the full experience.

It's easy to identify it's all depends from what note it starts!
If your lick will start from C and we are in G major you will get Lydian lick! Simple as that!
If you will harmonize the scale you will get this:
G maj7 - Ami7 - Bmi7 - Cmaj7 - D7 - Emi7 - F#half diminished
Same thing depends from what chord you will start you will get different sound!
This for example
F# mi7b5 - Emi7 - Bmi7
Will be a locrian chord progression!
I hope that makes sense!
Lixxx
Ahhh ok that rly is simple ^^

Did you pick the E an B because of how their notes move in the gmajor scale ( hope thats understandable ^^ )

Ok I will go practice now and once I can I will make some recordings so you can check if I rly got it

Cheers

Yes! I picked E and B because of G major scale!
You don't have to do recording just yet! For now just let me know when you are ready for the next mode!
