Hey guys smile.gif Can you remember when you first tried to record yourself playing guitar? Let's share some stories biggrin.gif I'm sure we all have fun stuff to talk about!

I for instance, remember that day, back in 2005 when a friend and guitar teacher came to my place and set Sonar 3 on my PC. I felt overwhelmed when I realized the tons of things I could do by recording myself. That's when it started for me smile.gif

How was it for you?

Good thread idea! i remember recording myself just on a handy cam before I got in to computer based recording and thinking how terrible I was at playing things I thought I could play well. Nothing like the cold truth of video!

I remember quite well:

This is it!

I actually had the stuff needed to record audio with for quite a while, just had never given it a try. What finally made me try it was someone mentioning how listening to yourself play is a great way to judge your progress. Now I record virtually everything I play, and it does help me to know where my strong points and weak points are. I'm hoping to one day be able to do video as well as audio! smile.gif

I remember being forced to have a bass in one recording at home and since I had no clue on virtual instruments laugh.gif and no bass player to rely on, I used the 7 string and thought it was pretty cool to be featured as a bass smile.gif

I remember that in 1999 I started playing with a power metal band called Damnation and the bass player, Marcelo Yakko had Cakewalk 9 in is computer and used to compose and record songs using it.I was blown away with it! It was like paradise!

I dont have my first recordings since i deleted them a long time ago and i really regret it. I remember doing a cover of the song Carousel by Axel Rudi Pell and i played it in the wrong tuning. It sounded bad.

Man i wish i would have kept them

I think the first time my guitar was ever recorded properly was in a studio.. but when recording myself, it was a Fostex 4 track tape machine ! wink.gif

Actually, I tell a lie.. before that we had a Philips tape machine in the house and it had a little inbuilt microphone so you could record any sound that it would pick up. I used to record little riffs and licks that way !

biggrin.gif I used to record myself telling stories on the tape recorder when I was about 6 or 7 - you would most probably laugh until you would drop, if you heard what was happening there.. biggrin.gif

I found the first proper multitrack recording I did myself from 2003 the other day. I'll upload it to soundcloud at the weekend and post it.

It took me 15 hours if I remember correctly, using Cool Edit Pro 2 and Drums on Demand.
Cosmin Lupu
15 hrs? wow dude biggrin.gif can't wait to hear this !

There was a lot of cursing when screwing up a near perfect take right near the end of the song and only playing a simple part. but that goes hand in hand with recording in my experience!

I hear you! I can't believe the disgusting sludge that spews forth from my mouth when recording. This is fine when I'm tracking electric, but most of the last ten years I've spent surrounded by mics capturing acoustic stuff. It's quite hilarious listening to some of those tirades when you bugger it all up.

Oh ... oh... laugh.gif and I thought I was the only one biggrin.gif sometimes you know it's coming and you know you are going to screw up the take laugh.gif that's the worst moment !
