Cosmin Lupu
Alright boys and girls!

Let's get it down with a new fun forum challenge smile.gif This time its all about EAR TRAINING - how good are your ears?

It goes like this - find out what chord this is (the one in the attachment)

The first one who finds out, has to record another chord (he chooses what) and post it here for the other guys to figure out and so on - the main rule is - the one who guesses the chord needs to start the new challenge smile.gif

It's not necessary to use any fancy recording devices - you only need to record 1 chord !

Ready??

GO!!
TreyDeschamp
I know the chord!

A#m7b5?

I'm not sure if that is the right chords name, I had to look at a chart to see which chord it was but the chord I just stated matched the sound... laugh.gif
Cosmin Lupu

smolentsev

That's perfect Artyom - but now, try and see what the relationship between the intervals are - considering E as the root and figure out the name of the chord. Mr. Rich was a sly fox biggrin.gif It's that nicknamed chord with a little extra something tongue.gif Mad was very close
mad
Well, these are exactly the same notes I got and used a chord-finder tool for to get a name tongue.gif

Sensible Jones
It a Jimi Hendixadd13!
biggrin.gif

Or I think the correct name would be EM7#9add13.

Ok, we have E as a root, then

G# - major third
D - minor 7th
G - looks like augmented 9th
C - looks like minor 13th

Also there is no 5th.

Now I'm totally confused about right name of this chord... smile.gif

Well, Neil has said the name before you did sad.gif major 3rd and b7th usually signal a dominant 7th chord and this one is E7#9add13 so Neil you missed it BY AN INCH biggrin.gif no M7 here - I just noticed you said M7 tongue.gif

So I say - why not Artyom AND Neil throw a chord at us, each!

I just noticed that too, now you mention it! I did mean to write m7 so as to distinguish it but must have made a typo!
Sorry!!
AK Rich
As far as I can tell the chord had been found but the name for this chord has not been guessed yet, unless I missed something.
The chord as I understand it is.

E7#9 b13
Cosmin Lupu
True - as it's a flat 13th we have there - sorry for having my head in the clouds smile.gif

brwnhornet59
The old Hendrix chord (E7#9) with a b13 (#5) built from E alt, 7th mode of FMM...
smolentsev
Alright! Here is one from me smile.gif
Cosmin Lupu
Alright guys! Who's the first to tackle smolentsev's challenge? biggrin.gif
brwnhornet59
It is a B 6/9 (sans 5th) with the 6th doubled in octaves.... B G# D# G# C# (R 6th 3rd 6th 9th)...

Indeed, but from the instructions I saw, the chord name was based off of the root. We can add all of the inversions as part of the answer if you want.
Cosmin Lupu
Yes, indeed guys, let's stick to the chord name based on the root, in order to avoid diversions for this one, BUT, since you came up with it, maybe I'll start a little activity based on this idea as well biggrin.gif So, Sensible Jones - you have the ball! biggrin.gif
brwnhornet59
LOL, but no one named the chord I posted as of yet... huh.gif
Sensible Jones
Sounds like a Diminished 7 to me.
F#, C, Eb, A.
As we know these can be repeated shapes so it could be F#dim7, Cdim7, Ebdim7 or Adim7.

No sir, try again...

To be fair I was 1/4-1/2 of a semitone flat of standard tuning when I recorded that. I did not realize it until afterwards...That will learn me to be in tune LOL...
Cosmin Lupu
Hehe, check the tuning folks, otherwise it will confuse everyone smile.gif So, what is this one then?
brwnhornet59
The slight offset tuning should not have stopped anyone from getting the sequence, Sensible Jones had two notes right. The notes are Eb A Db G...
Cosmin Lupu
I'm not telling biggrin.gif
Sensible Jones
Well, with that spelling it's Eb7b5, didn't sound like that to my ear though!

Yes, Eb7b5 from Eb H/W dim...

or

Eb7#11 built from lydian dom (4th mode of BbMM)...

Or

Eb7#11 from Eb wholetone...

Take your pick... smile.gif
Cosmin Lupu
Looks like Sensible is at the ball smile.gif What do you have for us mate?
Cosmin Lupu
Hey guys! Got a new one for ya! smile.gif What could this one be? tongue.gif
