Hey guys just wanted if anyone could explain a bit more about the kind of soloing done in that style of music, and how the solos are created or what makes them up. i'm wanting to learn that style of soling but cant seem to grasp the concept.

Hi mate, Cosmin suggested excellent lessons to be able to create solos like those ones. You would also also learning Chowy Fernandez lessons since he has covered progressive extreme metal style in many lessons. You will find riffs lessons but also solo lessons using modes and weird scales. Check it out here:

Once you learnt all the stuff that Cosmin suggested, you should start analyzing Necrophagist songs. My method is using a template to analyze songs, and have many songs analyze to be able to compare and get the most used concepts and ideas.

This is my template:

Name of the song:
Name of the band:

Structure // What is happening? // Chords & Scales

Structure: You will divide the tune in Intro - Riff - Verse - Pre chorus- - Chorus - Solo - Part C and so... You can add the letters A, B, C to the sections when you find different ones in the same tune (Ex: Verse A, Verse B, Chorus, Solo A, Solo)

what is happening?: Here you will describe each part. You can explain how is the part, if it has vocals, screams, melodies, harmonizations, how much is last, how many measures, etc. Every information that could be useful to understand the part.

Chords & Scales: Here you will post the tonality, the chord progression and the scales used for the melodies and solos.

I've analysed quite a few Necrophagist solos in the past for students, and for my own entertainment. On Epitaph there's a lot of harmonic minor scales going on, a few diminished scale licks and runs too.

Onset of Putrefaction has a lot of the same scale choices. Foul Body Autopsy for instance is almost purely diminished scale based. Fermented Offal Discharge is quite harmonic minor based, a few Yngwie style licks here and there give it an almost neoclassical feel.

All the sweeps tend to be similar patterns, either a root position minor arpeggio, extended dim 7 arpeggios, or sometimes root position major arpeggios.
