Full Version: First Things You Wanted To Learn On Guitar?

Do you remember what were the first things you wanted to learn ʺhow to do itʺ, on the guitar? Maybe it was a specific style of music, songs or techniques you were dreaming of playing on the guitar at an early stage?

In my case I remember that I was a big music fan. I used to be all day listening to bands like Guns n’ Roses, Ramones, Rolling Stones and Queen. I wanted to be able to play those riffs but I wasn’t sure how to start. We had an old nylon guitar at home from my father however I didn’t know what to do with it. But one day, when I was around 11, a friend appeared with a guitar and played some riffs by Deep Purple and Gun’s & Roses…. I paid attention to the fingerings and tried it as soon as I got back to my home… it was like magic. I've could never stop playing guitar since that day…

Do you remember how it all started for you and did you get there?

What a great thread!
Absolutely I remember it. Growing up we always had good music in my home: Beatles, Beach Boys, Presley, Cream, Bloomfield and many others. I had taken piano lessons as a kid but as I got older I was a bit 'meh' about it and soon stopped taking them. My dad always plunked around on the guitar but it didn't catch my ear until I was in 8th grade.

I remember I heard the intro to "Under The Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers and it instantly struck a chord with me. I couldn't stop listening to it and I just knew I had to try and play it. I asked my dad to help me figure it out on the guitar and so he did! Right about the same time (seriously it was all about the same week) I found my dad's Vinyl of Cream's 'Disraeli Gears' and was enamored by the cover. I'll never forget listening to track 2 (Sunshine of your Love) and I knew playing the guitar was what I wanted to do, what I needed to do.

From there the rest is history. Within a month's time I had completely changed the music I was 'into' and was hungry for anything with guitar. 8th to 9th grade was glorious as I discovered SRV, Hendrix, Guns & Roses, Eric Johnson, Satriani, Metallica and so many more. I sometimes wish I could go back and relive those days as everything was so fresh, new and exciting.

You know the funniest thing? I can't stand 'Under The Bridge' anymore. biggrin.gif

Rhinestone Cowboy by Glenn Campbell. I think I was 7.

First time I wanted to pick up the guitar and really want to learn something was the intro for wasted years, Metallica one, and sweet child o mine. Learned them then never really had a structure for learning till a couple years ago.

I hope to, tonight! Last night I went home and played that first simple riff and just smiled. It brought me back and made me laugh remembering how cool I felt being 13 years old and playing Eric Clapton.

Well here it is, just a taste after all these years. I'm not even sure if this is correct, just the way I learned how to play it 20+ years ago!

hahah epic!! I imagine that it must have been awesome to be able to play this riff when you just started to play guitar. It's very funny!
