Sure, we all love shred, rock, blues, jazz, funk, classical and all kinds of metal music, but pop music is something we all hate... or is it? Not me atleast, theres some pop that is really good and should be brought to attention!

Marit Larsen is just freakin amazing, shes young, got a beautiful voice and plays very, very awesome acoustic pop. And she is very beautiful rolleyes.gif

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vME8Rgr8Na8 - Don't save me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_i4ArMNAFM - Under the surface
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUrALU2zOTI - Only a fool

Trang Fødsel is kinda jazzy pop, I guess. They are super amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMH2A6uaYks - Drømmedame

Odd Nordstoga isnt exactly pop, but theres pop elements aswell as bluegrass, rock and folk. His older stuff got alot more pop and rock elements, even metal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqIvt2KizCM - Fuggel i karmen

Robert Randolph and the Family band funky rock, RnB, pop something laugh.gif

Sure these guys sings in norwegian, excluding Marit Larsen and Randolph, but come on, have a listen wink.gif
I have never had problems with listening to foreign languages, for instance, Pavels old band kicks ass even though alot of it isnt sung in english biggrin.gif

I'll post more if I can think of anything.

Anyway, dont be shy people, post some quality pop music wink.gif

Gotta love michael tongue.gif

I absolutely love Prince too. He's amazing. And he can shred too wink.gif

How about the beatles? Their early stuff was quite pop.

Nothing wrong with it, I just find it to be a genre that is more full of bad music than most, but of course there is good stuff to be found.

I would argue that John Butler is not pop. He's just popULAR biggrin.gif
And not trying to be argumentative but Sarah Blasko is more on the indie side of things for sure. Both good artists. JB plays a mean 11 string.

I thought Pop meant Popular? the new john butler cd is pop music, nothing like their previous albums which i love.

Indie? Thats a new word for me, I am just going by what I hear all the time on the radio.

Does Pop mean crap? Maybe you can clear this up for me as I have been thinking wrong for years.

Edit: I read up on it on Wikipedia, turns out pop music is music you can dance to. And often not written by the singer.

Hello to everyone!
I just wanted to say that I love music in general.
And I also think that the most important thing is the SONG.
If a song is great, then I don't really care how it is arranged.
A great song remains a great song!
But this is just my opinion. smile.gif
I wish a lovely day to everyone!

Yes it is short for popular but there are grades of popularity and I see 'pop' as music made with commercial goals as primary. That's just me.
It's very subjective and I would agree that JBT has taken a much more commercial approach with Grand National but it's still not 'pop' to me.
I don't think pop means crap - but many would argue that point...I'm with Eddiecat on this one laugh.gif

There are only two types of music: Good music and Bad music. Nothing has anything to do with genres.

I think it was Miles Davis that said something like that.

Well I enjoy pop every now and again I must say. Mostly 80's retro stuff though. So it's no surprise that my favourite pop song is "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics. Great band and amazing song. I mean loads of people have either sampled or covered this song. I love it.

Oh yes, that song is cool!

hehe, ABBA's awesome...
What do we mean when we say pop? If we mean the Spice Girls, then it's utter balls, if we mean The Offspring, Blink 182, catchy songs, crappy players (Offspring aren't bad players, but Mark & Tom....), but good songs none the less.
I think Pop music is just a style of music where the SONG is the most important thing, catchy hooks, however simple, are the key ingredient. It does NOT take any kind of degree of technical proficiency to play pop music, but I think it does take a hell of a lot of creativity.
This is where most guitarists go wrong...(me especially, and I'm really improvising this post, and realizing a whole lot biggrin.gif) they practice and practice and practice to be technically proficient and become amazing at playing exercises, but when it comes to writing songs....how good are they? A good example would be...Yngwie Malmsteen (IMHO), technically FANTASTIC....but really crappy music that NO-ONE but guitarists who want to play technically proficiently would listen to it....
Point is,....no matter how much you hate pop music,....we all need a little bit of it, I think.
