Hey GMC'ers! This time I've been working on a lesson in the Diabolic side of Black Metal. Since the very first songs, "Venom" and "Mayhem", a lot of bands has been working a lot in this style.
There are many ways to play this style, many line up combinations, but just one goal: do it extreme, dark, black, and loud. I will show you how to combine some violent riffs, with deep and atonal melodies. The main focus is fast licks and tightness.
Theory Tips:
How to compose this? How to make a song sound Evil? There are many options, some easy, some require a lot of study and practice. Here are some basic concepts you can try: combine minor chords from a different scale. I combined C#m followed by Gm. I developed a melody during one chord (C#m) and when I fall to the other (Gm), I force the melody to a note of the scale of the new chord.
Techniques:
* Alternate Picking
* Legato
* Octaves
* Palm Muting
Tempo:
160 bpm
Scales:
* F Minor
* E Minor
Tuning:
* Down 1/2 Step
* Eb - Ab - Db - Gb - Bb - Eb
(From thick to thin string)
Equipment:
POD xt: (to record) - my presets are on my board ;)
