Alexiaden931st January 2012I went through this with John Petrucci's Rock Discipline DVD, and he taught it pretty much exactly the same way! A good way to practise is apparently by alternate picking arpeggios instead of sweep picking them etc.
Anyway, awesome lesson, you look just like the young Petrucci too.

Hi Guys, and welcome to my lesson focusing on the motions of 'Inside' picking and 'Outside' picking. In order to progress beyond playing alternate picking phrases on one string, you will need to acquaint yourself with these aspects of picking.
If these aspects are ignored in our playing they can hold us back from progressing. You may wonder why it is that you can play fast and clean on one one string but when you try and cross over the strings, your technique falls apart and you can't keep up with the metronome. Well, the motions of picking inside the strings or outside the strings require practice as well. Just like any technique uses a particular group of muscles, so do these motions. If you combine practice of these aspects with simple speed workouts like my Stamina School lesson you will be tackling both the main aspects of alternate picking ability.
Eventually, when you have a degree of confidence and proficiency in these areas, then introducing other, more complex, picking exercises will make more sense. So before you go rushing for the Paul Gilbert and Yngwie Malmsteen licks , schooling yourself in the basic picking requirements first will aid you in your quest !
