Hi guys,

With this lesson I will show you how to change and add some new chords into a chord progression.

Be sure to master the previous lessons of the series, especially Jazz Notes 1: Building Chords and Jazz Notes 4: Swing Rhythm.

I wrote a simple melody to use as reference in this lesson, so we can hear how different chords sound with the same melody.

Here is the score with the basic chord progression. Eighth notes are played with swing feel.

The whole chord progression shown on the main video is:

You can easily see the variations from a line to another one.

I comment each line on slow videos. The last two substitutions are the more interesting ones speaking about Jazz Theory. As a general rule, you must pay attention on what the melody is doing. Be careful with the new chords to avoid unwanted dissonances between chords and melody.

Basically, we play quarter notes here. If you want to add a swing feel to your playing you can play each chord in this way.

It's your personal choice. I used this notation on the previous Swing Rhythm lesson because it was the introduction to this kind of playing but here you find simply quarter notes.
